NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Jay Cutler had arguably his best season for the Chicago Bears in 2015, but one fan remained unimpressed — all the way to the grave.
Elizabeth Porter Bowman, from Northbrook, Ill., recently passed away, but she didn’t let that stop her from taking one more parting shot at the polarizing quarterback in an obituary that has since gone viral.
In a death notice that ran in the Chicago Tribune on January 26, Bowman, 78, was described as a “lifelong fan of the Cubs, Blackhawks and Bears.”
But that excerpt has one reservation at the end: “(except Jay Cutler).”
Elizabeth’s son Bill told the Pioneer Press that the jab was part of a running joke in the family, and that she didn’t intend it to be disrespectful.
But that didn’t stop it from going viral. Outlets such as Rolling Stone, ESPN and Uproxx — among many others — all picked up the story. Uproxx headlined their article, “Jay Cutler is now getting trolled by dead people.”
It was the son Bill who included the three words in his mother’s obit, inspired by a similar, since-deleted Facebook post by Elizabeth’s daughter Susan.
A lifelong friend of Elizabeth’s, Janis Irvine, told the paper her pal would have found the attention surrounding the obituary funny, but that she would not have written it herself.
Irvine said she and Elizabeth, known to many as Betsy, had even had a disagreement about the Bears quarterback shortly before Betsy’s death.
“I said, ‘Betsy, you’re wrong, he’s a good quarterback,'” Irvine recounted. “‘They just don’t give him any protection.'”
Bill told the Pioneer Press his mother was a true Chicago sports fan, controlling her late father’s season tickets and often traveling into the city as a young girl to see the Cubs play at Wrigley Field.
“Looking at all these things, I feel a little bad for Cutler,” Bill told the Pioneer Press.
Cutler played 15 games for the Bears last season, notching a 64.4 completion percentage and throwing for 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Three of those turnovers came in the final week of the season.
