Apparently they offered him 30k last year and he didn't accept it. Now they are saying we don't even want it and you can't sell it. They said he may own the tape, but the NFL owns the contents.

If it's the only copy then why not buy it at a fair price and make money off it?

Exactly. The NFL is missing out on a Public relations Bonanza, all because of what amounts to pocket change to them. The NFL should give this guy a million, celebrate him and the tape as pieces of their history, instead of their pettiness.

The NFL is taking the "Don't let the terrorists win" attitude. They refuse to be extorted. If they give this guy a million dollars then the next time something is found that guy will ask for the same amount of money. I believe the NFL HOF in Canton will not purchase any historical articles. They only accept memorabilia that is donated. If a wealthy Chiefs or Packer fan wanted to purchase this tape privately the NFL couldn't stop the guy from selling it. If it was an all cash transaction there would be no record of the sale. He isn't required by law to surrender the tape. He could even light a fire in a trashcan and burn it if he wanted. $30K is a joke of an offer but like it or not the game is the NFL's intellectual property.

This is an example of a Bully. The NFL thinks they own that content? Well, nothing keeps that man from either taking it to his grave or displaying it for free (which it appears he refuses). A group of lawyers CAN find a way around this if they want too, now it may cost the tape owner a little money, but there are options.

I would think that an NFL team owner could purchase the film if he wanted it? ESPN could also get involved if they wanted the film and really get something done. I'm not shocked to read that the NFL attempted to strong arm CBS in not promoting this guy. I think this man could get a Fox or other sports company trying to compete with ESPN to air it. The more public this becomes the better his chances are of getting something and the worse the NFL looks. Roger Goodell makes like 50 mil a year, they have a budget somewhere to meet in the middle on this. The tape owner is offering to donate a large portion of the profits, he is not just trying to strike it rich.

I wouldn't sell that for 30k either.

I think some lawyer could sell that since the NFL is refusing to purchase this that is fore fitting their first right of refusal at this tape. Once they refuse then the guy should be allowed to take it to the open market.

he should just auction off the tape to the highest bidder and give them the contents of the tape for free.

I wouldn't buy it for $20 unless I knew I could sell it for much more. An old grainy VHS tape of guys who were brick layers and hung drywall in the off season. I bet that game was incredibly boring. Probably running the wing T offense. Only fun part of it would be seeing guys get taken down by their facemask with no flag thrown.

But very few black players (especially black QBs) --- it should be your dream-game.

Has nothing to do with first right of refusal. The NFL has copyright/information rights.

Sucks, but they're not obligated to offer anything.

In the week leading up to the Super Bowl, ESPN should have replays of past Super Bowls. I want to see this Terry Bradshaw guy in his prime because I have a tough time imagining him being good. He looks like he should be a Dad on some of these sit coms.
