My Dad was diagnosed when he was 30. He's 65 now and hasn't skipped a beat. He wears an insulin pump and is very regimented with his diet.

Its not not the end of the world. It's totally manageable.

your dad is doing it the right way. 35 yrs of type 2 diabetes usually = irreversible symptoms. specifically because a great deal of type 2 is related to health behaviors, which aren't an easy thing to change. glad he's doing well.

Shub, this gentleman speaks the truth. He has also offered to help as best he can, a very kind gesture. Take him up on it.

You can still live a quality life being insulin dependent. You have SIGNIFICANT control of disease expression don't doubt this. Your body is losing its battle with blood sugar control. The meds you were taking do not cure the problem and neither will the insulin you need to take. Help your body heal itself, don't underestimate its ability to heal. Heal it with movement (exercise) , heal it with food (anti-inflammatory diet). You WILL see changes. Can only speak in generalizations, you may find the following useful;

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3981696/

what this study tells us is that sadly the diet recommendations by the American Diabetes Association to help diabetics get better were wrong.

as a gross quick summary (the study link is above) :

group of people on a RESTRICTED caloric diet , high carbs, LOW fat (as per the US Dietary guidelines and echoed by the American Diabetes Association). The other group had a NON-restricted caloric diet but LOW carbs, high fat diet; goal to get into a ketogenic state (let the body run on ketones, not glucose, if you will)

results:
ADA group - lost on average 5.7 lbs. and 15% of participants were able to decrease dosage of diabetic meds

ketogenic diet- lost on average 12.1 lbs and 64% were able to reduce their dosage of diabetic meds

This is not an isolated study.

as a side, diabetes and periodontal disease (dental gum disease) have a strong association (neither is causal, no evidence for). This isn't surprising as a characteristic of both is inflammation. So if you have gum disease make sure that you get proper treatment for it, it will be helpful in the management of your diabetes.

consider googling Dr Mark Hyman. Read his book . He runs a Functional Medicine clinic in Ohio.

lots of healthy ,happy people that are insulin dependent diabetic . Bobby Clarke played in the NHL for 15 years ; a 3-time Hart trophy winner , a Stanley Cup Champion and Hall of Famer . He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes , requiring insulin, at 12 yrs old. He's now 66 years young...:)

Thats something. The ketogenic diet is used to tread people (usually kids) with seizures. In studies, like 40% had positive results from it.

diabetes, like hypertension, is a silent killer

make it your mission to get that hba1c down.

watch out especially for your skin. check your feet, check your legs, and for the love of god move around enough so you don't develop pressure ulcers
if there's one thing that kills old fucks with uncontrolled dm2, it's always infections. ruins quality of life significantly and is one of the, if not the, biggest cause of morbidity.

gl to you

Smartest response would be to seek out and devour information about improved bodily chemical balance that is not primarily Western-based medicine.

Western medicine emphasizes focus on the disease with a far secondary attention on alternative behavior patterns. Since whatever is given the most focus naturally expands, this system has resulted in a massive expansion of humans diagnosed with 'diabetic symptoms'.

Give strong consideration to the notion that if your Western-based doctor states anything as an absolute ("you will be dependent on injected insulin for life") that he is very likely wrong.

Stern medical pronouncemnts by western based medical professionals have been disproved routinely for decades. Your most profitable response will be to give respectful and short attention to their opinions while aggressively seeking more viable alternatives to your heretofore lifestyle habits.

Your body is an astounding mechanism with powers that most Western doctors dismiss as 'anecdotal' and/or 'exceptions to the rule'. Should you choose to wholly align yourself w such incredibly limited thinking you will miss out on a future replete with extraordinary health and vitality.

If you can get stabilized on insulin; and get on Trulicity; once a week shot med which enhances pancreas function, but might not be possible if you are true TyI DM; then it is amazing how well a person can do: BS from 400 to 83; A1c from 11 to 5.5>... it is possible; depends on your individual case..gl
