Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston capped off his 2015 rookie season in the NFL with a Pro Bowl apperance. Winston had 22 TD passes in his rookie campaign with 4,042 yards, becoming the youngest NFL QB to reach 3,000 and 4,000 yards passing yards in a season.
At age 21 in the 2015 NFL season, Winston also took over the top spot in NFL history with the most TD passes for a 21-year-old with 22. The previous record was 18 by 21-year-old Fran Tarkenton in 1961. Winston will now set his sights on breaking Dan Marino’s mark for most TD passes by a 22-year-old with 27.
Let’s take a look at the QBs that have had the most TD passes at each age from age 21 to 47.
21: Jameis Winston, 22
22: Dan Marino, 27
23: Dan Marino, Matthew Stafford, 41
24: Dan Marino, 34
25: Dan Marino, 43
26: Brett Favre, 48
27: Aaron Rodgers, 41
28: Peyton Manning, 49
29: Drew Brees, 34
30: Tom Brady, 50
31: Drew Brees, Jim Kelly, 33
32: Drew Brees, 46
33: Drew Brees, 43
34: Drew Brees, Tom Brady, 39
35: Brett Favre, 35
36: Y.A. Tittle, 38
37: Peyton Manning, 55
38: Peyton Manning, 39
39: Warren Moon, 23
40: Brett Favre, 27
41: Warren Moon, 17
42: Warren Moon, George Blanda, 2
43: George Blanda, 6
44: Vinny Testaverde, George Blanda, 4
45: George Blanda, 1
46: None
47: George Blanda, 1
In addition to Winston taking over the top spot for QB TD passes at age 21, several other QBs last season jumped into the Top 5 of other age groups:

  • Jacksonville’s Blake Bortles had 35 TDs at age 23 and is now third in that age group behind Marino and Stafford.
  • Oakland’s Derek Carr had 33 TD passes last season at age 24 falling one TD pass short of tying Marino’s mark of 34 at age 24.
  • Panthers’ QB Cam Newton had 35 TDs at age 26 and is now third in that age group.
  • Matthew Stafford of the Lions jumped into a tie for fourth with his 32 TD passes in 2015 at age 27.
  • Arizona’s Carson Palmer had 32 TD passes at age 35 and is now fifth in that category.
  • Saints’ QB Drew Brees continues his pursuit of the NFL mark for most TD passes in his 30s (more on that in a minute) with 32 TD passes last year at age 36.
  • Tom Brady is now second for most TD passes at age 38 with his 36 in 2015.
  • Peyton Manning had only nine TD passes last season, but it was enough to put him in fifth place for TD passes at age 39.
  • Matt Hasselbeck subbed for injured Indy QB Andrew Luck and tossed nine TD passes at age 40 in 2015. He is now tied for fourth in that age group.
If we expand these age groups to those QBs in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, we see that Dan Marino holds the record for most TD passes in his 20’s with 245. That is one more than Peyton Manning who had 244 in his 20’s. The only active QB in the Top 10 of this list is Detroit’s Matthew Stafford; he has 163 TD passes in his 20’s ranking 10th on the list. At age 28 he will have two more years in his 20’s and would need to toss 83 TD passes over the next two seasons to surpass Marino.
The battle for most TD passes for QBs in their 30’s is a lot more interesting. Peyton tops the list at 295. He is followed by Brady who at age 39 has 281 TD passes and will have one more year to pass Manning, which he will likely do next season. However, Brees looks like he has an excellent shot at passing both Manning and Brady for this honor. Brees has 260 TD passes in his 30’s and at age 37 he has three more seasons to add to that total.
Finally, the top spot for TD passes in their 40’s belongs to Warren Moon with 37. Unless he comes out of retirement, Favre sits second with 36. Hasselbeck’s nine TDs last season at age 40 moved him into seventh place on this list.
