my first bookie, somebody I used from my college years when we were betting $10 or $20 per game through the early 1990's when we were betting more than we should be betting, stuck me for over $ 1,000 25 years ago.

He showed up at my buddy's place of business a couple of days ago and gave him $ 600 for me.

He said he always felt bad about what happened, and he went through some difficult bouts of substance abuse, but he's back on his feet and he wanted to make good.

Good deal. That should cover the interest. Wait until he gives you the principal, you will feel like you hit the lotto. My old bookie died owing me $560. :hammerit

Lucky dog.
I had a college book stick me for ~$3K. He said he wasn't paying because a couple of other guys (including a friend-who kept his betting completely separate from me) owed him like a dime.
I harped on him for a bit...even after college.
Then he died in a motorcycle accident a couple years later. End of story.

I love the euphemisms of today. They take all the blame away. "..felt bad about what happened"?? Passive reference to what he actively did, as though someone else did the crime while he was just sort of aware of it. "..went through some difficult bouts with substance abuse"? Attempts to make his drug taking sound like a heroic battle.

Always nice when somebody does the right thing years after the fact. Happened to me twice over the last year. Renews ones faith in mankind.
