After countless years of lobbying and public outcry, professional mixed martial arts (MMA) is officially legal in the state of New York
With the news, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which has done the most work in years past to make this dream a reality, is already churning its gears to host events statewide. Outside of UFC 205 scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 12, the promotion plans to host a slew of cards throughout cities like Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, and more.
However, it now seems as if the organization has another venue in its cross hairs. In a recent interview with Newsday, UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta discussed the possibility of MMA and Major League Baseball coming together.
"There’s a bunch of other venues we want to go to," said Fertitta. "We want to go to Barclays, we’ve had discussions with Yankee Stadium to do something next summer there."
According to the report, New York Yankees officials have confirmed that no negotiations between the organization and UFC have taken place, but that both sides plan on sitting down in the near future. To be frank, an outdoor event of this magnitude in front of upwards of 60,000 people would be a true grand slam.
While the MMA world would have to wait a whole year for this epic event to manifest, it would certainly be worth it. Hopefully this opens up the door for more events in baseball stadiums across the country. Maybe Conor McGregor in Boston's Fenway Park?
