Mike Tirico, the current play-by-play announcer of "Monday Night Football," is headed to NBC, an industry source confirmed to CNNMoney on Monday.

Tirico, who has been on ESPN's flagship NFL broadcast since 2006, will leave after his contract ends this summer. The move was first reported by Sports Business Daily.

Tirico was a linchpin for ESPN. He covered multiple sports including NBA games, college basketball and golf coverage.

He has also been a staple at the network since 1991.

He's apparently the heir to Al Michaels and Costas.

Another article:

An ESPN source confirmed to SI that Sean McDonough is currently the leading candidate to replace Tirico as the voice of Monday Night Football. (Ourand and Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson reported the same thing.) That would be an excellent solution given the quality of McDonough’s work. The one downside: McDonough and Chris Spielman have developed into ESPN’s best college football announcing team.

Wonder what Tirico is going to do at NBC???
Al Michaels is still employed for SNF.

Unless Tirico is going to call NHL games.

NBC doesn't really have any other major sports.

There is the NBC Sports network.

Good for him! Get out of that cesspool of ESPN.

Careful what you wish for....of the four major OTA networks, NBC primetime programming has the highest number of gay and transgender characters. Would be a real drag having to explain to your children wassup wit dat

Nbc has a bunch of Thursday games this season I do believe. Michaels was on the Bill Simmons podcast and mentioned that ( I think ).

"A versatile broadcaster, Tirico also heads up ESPN’s second NBA broadcast team and will continue to call games through this year's playoffs, as his current deal ends this summer. He also has called college basketball and football games and led ESPN’s golf and tennis coverage. Tirico is expected to be the lead play-by-play voice on NBC’s new “Thursday Night Football” package of five late-season games. It is unclear what his other roles will be at NBC, where Al Michaels is the lead play-by-play voice for the network’s signature “SNF” package, and Bob Costas is an established Olympics host, having been selected as primetime host for a record 11th Olympics including this summer's Rio Games."

"Michaels has two years left on his NBC contract, which runs through '17. NBC’s golf portfolio – the network has deals with the PGA Tour and British Open – also are attractive to Tirico, who is known to be a big golf fan."

If they do anything to break up the best broadcast team in NFL history on SNF they are making a huge mistake.

Al and Chris are simply the best ever

Al is great.....so is Tirico

Tirico is fantastic, probably the 2nd best in the world behind al but you don't want to breakup Chris and Al. They special.

I always felt like Tirico don't care too much for Gruden . I wonder if this has something to do with that

NBC is getting Thursday Night Football.

And so is Twitter. Maybe Tirico is just gonna Tweet? With Kanye & the rest of the Twittyverse?

"Twitter will also be able to stream the games via its apps on platforms like Xbox game consoles, and the NFL says it is exploring ways to let Twitter stream the games via its syndication partners, including Google and Yahoo.

A press release from the NFL spells out a few more details: Twitter will stream 10 of next fall’s 16 Thursday night games — the same 10 games CBS and NBC will broadcast. The NFL network will carry the remaining six games.

While the NFL and Twitter haven’t disclosed the price for the package, people familiar with the bidding said Twitter paid less than $10 million for the entire 10-game package, while rival bids topped $15 million."

If you're a big time sports announcer , you're not using your head leaving for NBC unless you're top dog.. if you're leaving because you're not on board with Gruden , that's even more ridiculous. .it's not like you go home to him...do your game and move on instead of settling for obscurity at NBC...he's not even going to get in the golf booth that I can see

Maybe this is a way for him to go into semi retirement . Maybe he wants to reduce his workload.
