Running back Ezekiel Elliott goes to Dallas with No. 4 pick

By Todd Archer
ESPN

IRVING, Texas -- After a 4-12 finish last season, the Dallas Cowboys' reward was taking Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall pick Thursday in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Elliott will give the Cowboys the opportunity to recapture the formula that worked so well in 2014, when DeMarco Murray led the NFL with 1,845 rushing yards.

Elliott is the seventh running back the Cowboys have drafted in the first round and the first since Felix Jones in 2008. The only running back the Cowboys drafted higher was Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett, the second overall pick in 1977.
"Going into the draft, Dallas was the No. 1 place I wanted to end up at," Elliott said. "It's definitely a dream come true."
Behind an offensive line with three Pro Bowlers, Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin, the Cowboys hope to regain the running form that led to Tony Romo's best season and a defense that was largely kept off the field and was able to produce turnovers.
In three seasons at Ohio State, Elliott ran for 3,961 yards, the second most in school history. He scored 44 touchdowns, fourth in school history behind Pete Johnson, Keith Byars and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George. Elliott helped the Buckeyes win the 2014 national championship.
"Hopefully, I can do the same thing in Dallas: help them win the Super Bowl trophy," Elliott said.
The Cowboys were led by Darren McFadden's 1,089 yards last year and finished with 1,888 yards on the ground as a team. In free agency, the Cowboys signed Alfred Morris, who had three 1,000-yard seasons in the first four years of his career with the Washington Redskins, to a two-year deal.

The Cowboys view Elliott as a three-down back. They were willing to spend a premium draft pick on a running back, despite their unwillingness to spend big on Murray after the 2014 season or get involved in a high-priced free-agency chase this year.
"I think I could be a bell-cow running back," Elliott said. "I think late in the fourth quarter, when we're up a touchdown, no one's going to have to worry about our ability to run that clock out."
The Cowboys believe Elliott can bring big-play ability to their offense and open things up for Romo, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten in the passing game. Elliott had 12 runs of more than 50 yards for the Buckeyes and is the only player in school history with three rushes of at least 80 yards.
In the 1990s, the Cowboys rode the Triplets -- Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith -- to three Super Bowls. In 2014, they rode the Triplets of Romo, Murray and Bryant to within inches of an NFC Championship Game. They now hope the triplets of Romo, Bryant and Elliott can deliver them back to a Super Bowl and as far as possible from a 4-12 finish.

It's a stupid pick. Running backs are A dime a dozen. Get someone in the 5th round and he will have the same production. I don't care if he makes the pro bowl next year, it is still a stupid pick

I think Herschel Walker. How good would Herschel do in the game nowadays in his prime?

Thats just dumb.

Thats like saying wait till the 6th round to get a qb because Brady was a 6th round pick

Exactly. People just regurgitate shit they hear. Elliot is the 3rd Top 20 RB drafted by the Cowboys.

Anyone know the other 2?

Of the top 20 rushers last year 15 were drafted before round 5 so no that's not correct. RBs best years are their first 5 so if you don't wanna draft one with a decent pick good luck

Dallas is one of the few teams that can justify this selection. If you gonna invest so much money and draft picks on that o line you better take advantage of it in every way you can .

Part of the reason running games are not as big of a deal as they use to be is because in the salary cap era era not many teams have been able to keep a good o line unit in place and this is hurting running backs in the NFL. Dallas has 3 1st round picks on the o line that have been together at least 3 years and that's not even counting Collins who they stole from everyone else last season who would have been a 1st round pick .

Dallas also stole J Smith this year by having their team doctors perform his surgery and telling the rest of the league he is worse off then he really is. But it's ok Goodell and Jones are buddies . Nothing gonna happen

Guess I am just used to the Peyton/ Luck eras where the Colts could put anyone back there and they succeeded with Colts and flopped elsewhere. Here are the backs that achieved some level of success with Colts. Edgerrin James, Joseph Addai, Dominic Rhoades, Donald Brown, Vick Ballard, and prob a couple others.

Look at the Patriots, they have a different back every other week.

Demarco Murray was the greatest thing in Dallas and was a 3rd round pick.

I guess Dallas can justify the pick with what they already have. They prob. could have traded back a little and still got the guy though. Sure teams would have traded up to take Ramsey

Of the of those 4 colts that were successful 3 were first round picks so thanks for proving my point. Ballard was a 6th rounder and had no success. Mike hart and Herron were also 6th rounders and were busts so besides Rhodes I'm not seeing your theory work out for Indy. RBs are like other positions, there will be a wide gap in talent between guys taken early and those taken late. There's also gonna be late picks or undrafted guys that have good careers but that happens at all positions.

And after they left the colts, they did nothing which is the point.

And none were worth a 1st round pick except maybe Edgerrin.

I hate Dallas so I was glad to see this pick. I think you can get very good skill players in later rounds. I would not use my first round pick on a running back.

Even if you took a running back and he turns out to be very good his impact for your team will typically be only about five years. On the other hand if you take a good offensive lineman or defensive lineman he may be an impact player for 10 years. Same goes for a quarterback. Quarterbacks are a much bigger risk but if you are right it is a much bigger win. The problem with quarterbacks is you may waste 3 or 4 years trying to develop him only to find out he wasn't the answer.

Unlike the NBA where one player can start to change the whole franchise (because only 5 play at a time). In the NFL it is only one small piece to the puzzle. In the NFL New England has done the best job of managing the salary cap. They put almost no money into running backs and wide receivers. It is their quarterback and offensive line. That will change for them when they don't have a great quarterback anymore.

Most of the teams with long term success in NFL have been lucky enough to have a franchise quarterback to build around. It is easier when that piece of the puzzle is in place.

On on the defensive side of the ball I used to think give me an elite pass rusher. A friend of mine that played middle linebacker in the big ten (and also was very smart...hard to believe) told me give me a corner that can cover over a pass rusher. Now I believe that is what I would want to have an elite defense. If I can let me corner go one on one it frees up other players to blitz and create a pass rush or what ever else I want to do on defense. See Seattle and Sherman at cornerback.

Lol. Guys they have alford morris, relax. The kid wont be a every down back. He's a home run hitter. No one in the draft had that ability at running back to catch a ball in the flat and take it to the house.
