University of Dayton redshirt freshman center Steve McElvene has died at age 20, as first reported by WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Ind.
NBCSports later confirmed the report with the Allen County (Ind.) coroner’s office and added that he died at 11:19 a.m. Thursday. A former coach told WANE-TV that McElvene collapsed at his family’s home in New Haven, Ind.

McElvene, 6-foot-11 standout at New Haven High, averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks during a freshman season in which he set a single-season school record for blocked shots. According to WANE-TV, he arrived at Dayton two years ago weighing more than 300 pounds but began last season at just 268.
McElvene had six points and six rebounds in Dayton’s first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Syracuse.
