University of Dayton redshirt freshman center Steve McElvene has died at age 20, as first reported by WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Ind.

NBCSports later confirmed the report with the Allen County (Ind.) coroner’s office and added that he died at 11:19 a.m. Thursday. A former coach told WANE-TV that McElvene collapsed at his family’s home in New Haven, Ind.

Dayton coach Archie Miller issued a statement on the tragic news:

McElvene, 6-foot-11 standout at New Haven High, averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks during a freshman season in which he set a single-season school record for blocked shots. According to WANE-TV, he arrived at Dayton two years ago weighing more than 300 pounds but began last season at just 268.

McElvene had six points and six rebounds in Dayton’s first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Syracuse.

Yup......there's an old lady my family knows that's 105 years old, she lives with her daughter & her mind is sharp as a tack.

And then you have this young bball player die at 20......you never know. Life is so fragile, just knowing that you can die whenever is scary in itself, that's why most people never think about it, & if it crawls in their thoughts, they get drunk or get high because facing your own mortality is scary.
