Syracuse to spend $105 million on new Carrier Dome roof

Syracuse will spend $105 million on a permanent roof for the Carrier Dome, reports The Daily Orange’s Justin Mattingly.

The university will also make other improvements to the Dome, which will amount to an additional $100 million, as well as a $50 million renovation project for Archbold Gymnasium (Gym located on the SU campus)

Mattingly reports that the total cost of the renovations will be nearly $255 million.

Plans for the renovations are expected to be unveiled in June.

As a Syracuse fan (everything except football) and somebody that goes to the Dome 15-20 games a year (Hoops and Lacrosse) IMO its good they decided not to knock down the Dome and build a new stadium ... but I sure didn't see a quarter billion dollar renovation coming.

First thing I thought was "they should tear it down". Honestly, how much of an improvement will that be? Does it need more than just a roof?

Sure it needs some updates (built in 1980) and its always been funny that its named after Carrier and has no air- conditioning ... But IMO there was no need to tear it down. One big problem with that is the possible areas they looked at for a new stadium were miles from campus. Why make it hard for the students to get there especially during the cold / snowy winter months. They were also having problems finding an area big enough for parking.

IMHO Everything doesn't need to be state of the art with all sorts of stores / restaurants and a TV every 5 feet.

Sure I'm pleased they are improving the place ... I'm just surprised the amount they are spending

The O'Connell Center in Gainesville - home to UF basketball, swimming & diving, indoor track & field, and gymnastics - is getting a nearly $70 million makeover. All UF basketball games in Nov & Dec away, it will open in January. Most UF fans feel it should have been torn down. It opened in 1980 as well.

I agree w/ you that being on campus is a huge benefit. For that price tag it seems they'd be doing more than just a roof. They could gut the place and rebuild the seating, concessions, restrooms, locker rooms, skyboxes, press boxes, etc. - it seems, for that price!
