Over the last couple years, he had started visiting our local rink where my kids play. He would just hang around and watch practice, and then take pictures with all the kids. I actually ran into him at a grocery store about 6 months ago, and was surprised he was pushing his own cart. He was always with his son or grandson, of course, and wasn't very verbal, but he enjoyed being recognized and seeing his fans.

For me, seeing him was like seeing Babe Ruth or Red Grange: a legend come to life.

RIP Mr. Hockey.

just a damn good guy. As was Mrs Howe. Big hearts.

'Colleen Howe has stated in an open letter: "Both Gordie and I stem from humble, rural origins. We have been fortunate to see the positive effects hockey has had on our lives, our family’s lives and the lives of millions of others"'

'But all the honors and accolades pale in comparison to his greatest hockey achievement -- playing with his sons Mark and Marty, first with the Houston Aeros of the WHA and then in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers in Gordie's final season in 1979-80

"I always refer to that as my greatest accomplishment and excitement," Howe said of getting on the ice in a Houston Aeros uniform with his sons in 1973'

As a kid, I was a "Junior Whaler" and had the pleasure of meeting him twice. Was a very nice guy.

"What he did for the sport in the U.S. - during its several eras of growth - was to epitomize the humility and friendliness of hockey athletes." Emrick said. "People came up to Gordie Howe because they knew they could. And they would walk away with a smile on their face, just like they expected to."</culink>

[h=2]Statement from Lions president Rod Wood on the passing of Gordie Howe[/h]
“We not only lost a sports legend today, but also one of the most iconic, impactful and beloved people our community will ever know.

“Gordie Howe’s imprint on the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan and the game of hockey was generational and ever-lasting. While he was “Mr. Hockey” to the sports world, he was that and so much more to Detroiters and Michiganders. He was a true gentleman and an inspiration to so many. His legacy will undoubtedly live on forever.

“On behalf of Mrs. Ford, her family and the Detroit Lions organization, we offer our deepest sympathies to Marty, Mark, Cathy, Murray; the entire Howe Family; and the Detroit Red Wings organization.”
