When Jason Mercier won the $10,000 no-limit deuce-to-seven lowball earlier this week he was one third of the way to taking $1.8 million from fellow poker pro Vanessa Selbst.
Selbst agreed to a bet against Mercier, a four-time bracelet winner after his victory this week, winning three bracelets this summer. Only a handful of players have ever done that before. Selbst made nearly the same bet against Polish poker pro Dzmitry Urbanovich.
In nearly 47 years of the WSOP, someone having a three-bracelet summer has only happened five times. Jeff Lisandro last did it in 2009.
In both wagers, which happened in January, Selbst’s opponents risked $10,000 of their own money. Unlike the bet with Urbanovich, the bet with Mercier wasn’t publicized.
Until now.
Unlike the 21-year-old Polish pro, Mercier is no WSOP rookie. He was the massive chip leader with seven remaining in the $10,000 razz event on Wednesday, which gave Selbst quite the sweat. She has already began trying to sell off action as a form of insurance against losing the seven-figure wager, but it’s unclear if that will help her.
Urbanovich hasn’t yet cashed at the Series, so she isn’t worrying about that one.
According to Selbst, she made the Mercier bet when drinking and tried to buy out of it for $1,000 when sober, presumably the next day. However, Mercier refused. He also refused a $100,000 buyout this week after he won his first bracelet of the summer.
Selbst explained her predicament in a couple of Tweets:
<twitterwidget class="twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered" id="twitter-widget-0" data-tweet-id="742897608407060480" style="position: static; visibility: visible; display: block; transform: rotate(0deg); max-width: 100%; width: 500px; min-width: 220px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"><article class="MediaCard MediaCard--mediaForward customisable-border" data-scribe="component:card" dir="ltr">View image on Twitter

</article>

</twitterwidget>Mercier of course chimed in on Twitter, saying that the $100,000 offer is too low at this point. He also disagreed with Selbst’s comment that she was highly intoxicated when it was made.

It’s been an incredible week of poker for Jason Mercier. First he won the $10,000 no-limit 2-7 event at the 2016 World Series of Poker for $273,335. He then immediately late registered for the $10,000 razz event, and managed a runner-up finish, good for another $168,936.
The 29-year-old Floridian then late registered for the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, and somehow managed to take the chip lead into the final table. Despite many ups and downs and playing through obvious exhaustion, Mercier was able to become the last man standing out of the field of 171, picking up the $422,874 first-place prize and his second gold bracelet of the summer.
Mercier now has five bracelets overall, and with more than $17.1 million in winnings, he sits at no. 11 on the all-time live tournament earnings list.
“This feels amazing," Mercier said. "Especially after all that’s happened this week. I’m so exhausted. But I also feel so much energy right now.”
But this week has been far more profitable for Mercier than the $865,145 he has collected thanks to his various bracelet bets with other high-stakes poker pros. Although the exact numbers haven’t been made public, it is rumored that Mercier made more than first-place money for both of his wins this week in side bets. According to him, he is now “freerolling the next year” after winning two events.
Incredibly, Mercier can add another $1.8 million to his bank account from fellow PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst by winning a third bracelet this summer. Selbst has been reportedly trying to hedge her bet against Mercier ever since he refused to accept her $100,000 buy-out offer.

</twitterwidget>With his fifth bracelet, Mercier joins some elite company. Other poker legends with five bracelets include David Chiu, John Juanda, Allen Cunningham, Scotty Nguyen, Daniel Alaei, Berry Johnston and Stu Ungar. There are now only 14 players in WSOP history with more bracelets than Mercier.
Of course, Mercier’s win wasn’t easy. He had to overcome one of the more stacked final tables in recent memory featuring Bryn Kenney (8th), Yuval Bronshtein (7th), Jesse Martin (6th), Mikhail Semin (5th), Adam Friedman (4th), Nick Schulman (3rd) and James Obst (2nd).
Other notables who made the money included John Monette (9th), Randy Ohel (10th), Ron Ware (14th), Jason Somerville (16th), Owais Ahmed (17th), Daniel Alaei (18th), David Benyamine (19th) and Roland Israelashvili (20th).
In addition to a mountain of cash, Mercier also picked up 780 Card Player Player of the Year points. He now has a total of 2,280 points this year, putting him in 16th place in the overall standings.
Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at this final table:
PlacePlayerEarnings (USD)POY Points
1Jason Mercier$422,874780
2James Obst$261,354650

Meanwhile, the ‘Selbst sweat’ is no longer the biggest issue from the prop betting angle, as she has managed to sell off most of the action on the $1.8million-$10K bet she had with Mercier.
According to pocketfives.com, Mike ‘Timex’ McDonald has bought out the action – at a price tag believed to be about the $100K which Mercier himself rejected.Commenting on the prop-bet, pocketfives stated yesterday that “Mercier claims it’s all in the past now after Selbst sold most of her action on the bet to Mike McDonald, adding, “It’s pretty much squashed I think,” said Mercier. “I know that she pretty much bought out or sold the bet, if I end up winning three I guess I’ll end up getting paid from somebody else."
