GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford County school officials said a North Carolina teenager has died a day after getting sick at football practice.

District athletic director Leigh Hebbard told media outlets that the student was going to be a freshman in the fall at Page High School.

The teen, identified as 14-year-old Karson Cross, attended Cornerstone Charter Academy last school year, CBS affiliate WFMY reported.

"It is with heavy hearts we share with you that Karson Cross has passed away," the school posted on its Facebook page Wednesday. "Karson was an excellent student and will be greatly missed by everyone."

Hebbard said Karson was attending a conditioning workout around 5 p.m. Monday when he became ill and was taken to the hospital. Officials did not know if he lost consciousness before he got medical help.

He died Tuesday.

"You know, he was a Pirate. Whenever we lose a Pirate, it's difficult. We went out to the parents home today just to show our love and support," Page High School Principal Patrice Faison toldWFMY.

Faison said Karson's parents were watching practice when he collapsed.

The school's athletic director said it was 85 to 87 degrees Monday evening, not hot enough to delay practice or do anything differently, WFMY reported.

School officials said the teen had a physical before starting practice and was an "A'' student

I really can't remember when I was playing, back in the day ... if we worked out in Temps that high ....
maybe we did, and Thank God that nothing like that ever happened.
But you hear more and more about these.... and makes you wonder if they are just Pushing these Kids more and more.

I remember practicing in the heat but I sure don't remember having so much going on when I was younger playing sports. My 14 year old has the following today and it's supposed to be 102 degrees...

Weight lifting at 7:30 AM, open basketball gym 8:30-10:00. Hitting practice at 1:00-2:00 then full baseball practice 7:30-9:00 tonight. He did the same yesterday but a baseball double header at 6 & 8 pm so got home late. I love all the opportunities but also think kids get burned out these days. But if doesn't do it, kids will pass him that do.

That sounds like a tough schedule ... I'm assuming that the weight lifting was done Indoors ? and when you say "Open" basketball gym is Outdoors ?

I would think open means indoors, but not structured practice, so it's mainly shoot around and pick up games. Like open gym here means just roll and practice techniques that you choose or whatever goes...

as as for being too hot for practice, I think it is for two a days here in the afternoons right now. Like Go Blue said though, either do it or get passed up, or end up like me and the old lady and get burnt out instead and turn down D1 schollies bc you actually wanna life outside of sports for a change, or a little at least...

Yes there should.

When i played high school our coach was so tough, we werent allowed water breaks until he said, which waa rare.

It was so bad that we would sneak small containers of water down our pants at practice.

But he was one of the winningest coaches in the state of Florida at the time so hard to knock him that much...

Matty is correct, open gym means pickup games and the coach can't technically coach or it's a violation of high school rules. But I know he sort of coaches and talks to the boys. All indoors, even hitting is inside but then after all that to go outside in the heat, he's exhausted at the end of the day.

We didn't have a big football program at my HS, Track was bigger there. But we also had a hard nose coach that thought he was going to Win something big.
For every minute Any player was late, we had to run an extra mile. It was a big joke. Nobody really cared about Football in our school , we were a below .500 team and it was all about
the Track stars that came out of our school.

anyway, i think a lot of these coaches haven't in their head work these kids until they drop.

Would you rather him be at home playing Xbox?

My Son's FB practices have been cancelled a couple times over the years due to heat, and since we live in CT, we always wondered what those in warmer climates do...
