Gregory Bourdy is introducing himself to American golf fans with a round to remember at the 116th U.S. Open.
Bourdy is putting together one of the best rounds Oakmont Country Club has seen during any of its record nine U.S. Opens. The 34-year-old Frechman is on a run of playing his past nine holes at 7-under par, vaulting him into the lead as he embarked on playing the final four holes of his second round late Saturday morning.
Bourdy is at 6-under for the round and 5-under for the tournament after making birdies on Nos. 4, 5, 9, 13 and 14 and holing his approach shot from 137 yards on the par-4 No. 11 for just the eighth eagle of the tournament.
Bourdy, who will make a cut at the U.S. Open for the first time, leads Dustin Johnson by one shot. If he can play the final four holes of his round at 1-under, Bourdy can match Johnny Miller's legendary Oakmont record 63 during the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open.
Like Johnson, Scott Piercy and Sergio Garcia have long been in the clubhouse; they're at three shots back.
The third round is scheduled to begin later Saturday after the entire field completes Round 2. Heavy rain Thursday has pushed back the timetable of this U.S. Open.
For about a half an hour Saturday morning, Lee Westwood held sole possession of the lead — but four bogeys over a five-hole span pushed him back into a tie for fifth at 1-under with a host of other golfers.
Westwood had surged into sole possession of the lead with a pair of birdies among the first four holes of his second round Saturday that moved him to 5-under. But as he teed off at No. 11, he'd tumbled back.
The lead and Andrew Landry quickly parted ways earlier Saturday morning. Landry, a relative unknown ranked 624th in the world who started his second round tied with Johnson at 4-under, bogeyed the sixth and seventh holes, then double-bogeyed the par-3 eighth hole. A birdie at No. 13 had Landry at 1-under through 15 holes.
All of the Thursday morning first-round group — and a small group of finishers from Friday night — began teeing off at 7 a.m.
Jim Furyk, Daniel Summerhays and Andy Sullivan completed second rounds at minus-1 for the tournament. Zach Johnson was at minus-1 while on the course playing his second round.
Defending champion Jordan Spieth bogeyed No. 1 to drop to plus-3, but birdied Nos. 2 and 4 before a bogey at No. 6 to stand at 2-over for the tournament.
The course continues to play tough. The rough has taken a toll on the early players. The greens remain receptive by Oakmont expectations, but the speed is beginning to pick up as the sun shines on the course.
Oakmont received 2.97 inches of rain from Wednesday night through Friday morning.
Phil Mickelson came out early Saturday to finish his second round from Friday evening. He finished the first 36 holes at plus-7 and now must wait while the final players finish their second round.
He will be close to the cut line but said after the round he believes he will survive the cut. Several big names including Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler were close to the cut line as they play their second round.
McIlroy is heating up — he started the day at 7-over, but birdied four of his first seven holes to move to 3-over.
Fowler was at plus-7 through seven holes; the projected cut line is plus-6.
The field will be cut to the top 60 and ties at the conclusion of the second round. Those 60 will tee off Saturday afternoon and hope to finish play before dark.
