Lineker-McDonald now headlines UFC Fight Night 91, Tony Ferguson gets Landon Vannata in co-main

With the Monday announcement that a Michael Chiesa injury would scrap the planned main event for UFC Fight Night 91 next month, the UFC acted quickly to right the ship.

Tony Ferguson (20-3 MMA, 10-1 UFC), who was set to meet Chiesa (14-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) in the lightweight main event, will stay on the card against UFC newcomer Landon Vannata (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC). But Ferguson now will slide down to the co-main event.

Moving up into the headlining spot is a bantamweight fight between Michael McDonald (17-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and John Lineker (27-7 MMA, 8-2 UFC). UFC officials announced the changes today.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs live on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Vannata, a New Jersey native who trains at the Jackson-Wink MMA camp in Albuquerque, N.M., has started his pro career a perfect 8-0 with seven stoppage wins. In April, he stopped Ramico Blackmon in the first round. His highest-profile fight to date was a first-round TKO of Chad Curry this past November at RFA 32.

McDonald, currently ranked No. 8 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings, returned from more than two years on the sidelines with a come-from-behind submission of Masanori Kanehara at UFC 195 in January. The bout was his first since a December 2013 guillotine choke submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC on FOX 9.

Lineker won his second straight fight since returning to bantamweight and fourth consecutive bout overall with a unanimous decision victory over Rob Font at UFC 198.

With the change to the card, UFC Fight Night 91 now includes:

•John Lineker vs. Michael McDonald
•Tony Ferguson vs. opponent TBA
•Tim Boetsch vs. Josh Samman
•Alexey Oleinik vs. Daniel Omielanczuk
•Keita Nakamura vs. Kyle Noke
•Ben Nguyen vs. Louis Smolka
•Ryan Hall vs. Alex White
•Cortney Casey vs. Cristina Stanciu
•Sam Alvey vs. Eric Spicely
•Matthew Lopez vs. Rani Yahya
•Devin Clark vs. Alex Nicholson
•Scott Holtzman vs. Cody Pfister
