Suns Announce NBA Summer League 2016 Roster


The Suns will begin workouts in Phoenix on Wednesday in preparation for NBA Summer League 2016 in Las Vegas, Nev., from July 8-18.


The 13-man roster is highlighted by 2015-16 NBA All-Rookie First Team selection Devin Booker, Suns forward/center Alan Williams and the team’s 2016 NBA Draft acquisitions Dragan Bender, Marquese Chriss and Tyler Ulis. Suns Assistant Coach Nate Bjorkgren will serve as head coach of the summer league team.


The Suns tip off their summer league schedule against the Portland Trail Blazers on July 9 at 1 p.m. at Cox Pavilion and are also scheduled to face the Boston Celtics on July 10 (7:30 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center) and the Miami Heat on July 12 (3:30 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center). Following these three contests, the Suns will play at least two more games as part of a tournament-style schedule to determine the NBA Summer League 2016 Champion.


Prior to their departure to Las Vegas, the Suns will hold five practice sessions from July 6-8 on the Annexus Practice Court at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Lakers Announce 2016 Summer League Roster


EL SEGUNDO – The Los Angeles Lakers announced today their roster for the 2016 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, highlighted by 2015 NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection D’Angelo Russell and the 2nd overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft, Brandon Ingram. Joining Russell and Ingram are 2015 Lakers NBA Draft selections Larry Nance Jr. and Anthony Brown, and the team’s 2016 second round pick Ivica Zubac.


The team will hold its first practice next Tuesday, July 5 at the Toyota Sports Center and begin Summer League play in Las Vegas with back-to-back games on Friday, July 8 against the New Orleans Pelicans and Saturday, July 9 versus the Philadelphia 76ers. The Lakers conclude their scheduled games with a contest against new Lakers Head Coach Luke Walton’s former team, the Golden State Warriors, on Monday, July 11 before the Summer League tournament begins. The Lakers are guaranteed to play no fewer than five games.


All Lakers summer league games will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes, as well as ESPN and NBATV.

Warriors announce Vegas Summer League roster!


Summer League is a fun, exploratory, whirlwind event. Hundreds of players from all over the world convene in Vegas either trying to find a niche in The Association, or trying to prove that they were worth their high draft pick. The NBA’s assorted media members descend upon the city as well. It functions as a window into the future, as well as a place for every single person involved/invested in the league to get together and talk shop for a week. Deals are cut in back rooms, drinks are consumed after hours. Gambles pay off, literally and figuratively.


So, that being said, I’m delighted to report that the Warriors just released their roster for 2016!

Lakers announce 2016 Summer League roster/assistant coach hires


Rookie swingman Brandon Ingram, the 2016 No. 2 overall draft pick, and second-year guard D’Angelo Russell, the No. 2 overall pick last summer, highlight the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2016 NBA Summer League roster, which the team announced Friday.


The Lakers will play at least five games in the Las Vegas Summer League tournament from July 8-18, with their first games falling on July 8 against the New Orleans Pelicans and then July 9 against the Philadelphia 76ers.


Other notable players on the Lakers’ summer league roster include Croatian center Ivica Zubac, who was taken with the 32ndoverall pick this summer; forward Larry Nance Jr., a first-round draft pick last year; and swingman Anthony Brown, a second-round draft pick last year.


The Lakers are scheduled to open summer league practice July 5 at their training facility in El Segundo, Calif. Jesse Mermuys, whom the Lakers announced Friday will join rookie head coach Luke Walton’s staff as an assistant for the 2016-17 regular season, will coach the Lakers' summer league squad.


Mermuys joins the Lakers after being a head coach for the Toronto Raptors’ NBA D-League affiliate, the Raptors 905. He was also a assistant coach under Raptors head coach Dwane Casey for two seasons. Like Walton, Mermuys attended the University of Arizona.


Mark Madsen will be an assistant coach for the Lakers’ summer league team and will retain that role -- one that he held for the last two seasons under ex-Lakers head coach Byron Scott -- in the upcoming regular season, the Lakers announced.


Brian Shaw was also officially announced as an assistant on Walton’s staff. Shaw won three titles as a Laker from 2000-02 and then two more as an assistant coach in 2009 and 2010. He also served as a head coach of the Denver Nuggets for two seasons.

Celtics Announce 2016 Summer League Roster


BOSTON, MA – Celtics 2016 Draft Picks Jaylen Brown, Guerschon Yabusele, Ben Bentil, Demetrius Jackson and Abdel Nader will join current Celtics Terry Rozier, R.J. Hunter, Jordan Mickey and James Young as members of the Celtics entrant to the 2016 Utah Jazz and Las Vegas Summer Leagues.


They are joined on the roster by 2015 Celtics second round draft pick Marcus Thornton, free agents Malcolm Miller and Corey Walden, who both appeared on the 2015 Celtics Training Camp roster, JayVaughn Pinkston and Mouphtaou Yarou.


The Celtics’ first game in the Utah Summer League will be Monday, July 4 at 7:00 p.m. ET when they take on the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics’ three-game schedule in Utah continues with match-ups against the host Utah Jazz on July 5 at 7:00 p.m. ET and the San Antonio Spurs on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Beginning on July 4, all Celtics games for Utah Summer League will air on CSN New England.


The Celtics will then travel to Nevada for the Vegas Summer League and compete in three preliminary round games from July 9-12 before being seeded in a tournament that starts on July 13 and concludes with the Championship Game on July 18. Their first game is on Saturday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. ET against the Chicago Bulls. They will continue their schedule with games against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, July 10 (10:30 p.m. ET) and against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, July 12 (6:00 p.m. ET). The Celtics are guaranteed to play at least five games in the Vegas Summer League. Games between July 13-18 will be announced by the NBA at a later date. ESPN will present all 67 games from Las Vegas across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU and WatchESPN.

OKC Announce 2016 Summer League Roster


OKLAHOMA CITY, July 1, 2016 – The Oklahoma City Thunder announced its roster for the 2016 Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League. The Thunder’s summer league team is set to participate in five games during the week-long event scheduled to take place from July 2-8 at the Orlando Magic’s practice court at the Amway Center.


Oklahoma City’s summer league roster includes Thunder forwards Josh Huestis, Mitch McGary, guard Cameron Payne and 2016 second round pick guard/forward Daniel Hamilton. Several familiar faces also appear on the summer roster including: Semaj Christon, Dakari Johnson, Marcus Lewis, Boubacar Moungoro, Richard Solomon, Reggie Williams, Kameron Woods and Tomislav Zubcic, all current or former members of the Oklahoma City Blue. Mark Daigneault, head coach of the Oklahoma City Blue, will lead Oklahoma City’s summer league entry.


Standings will be kept over the first six days of the league according to a point system and on the final day, each team will play their fifth and final game against the opponent seeded most closely to them in the standings.


Due to space limitations, the event is closed to the public and will be open only to media and team/league personnel. Games can be viewed live on NBA TV and all box scores/game recaps can be found online at www.okcthunder.com.

Denver Nuggets’ summer league roster includes 2016 draft picks, local players and Jimmer Fredette


The Nuggets on Friday announced their 16-player roster for the NBA summer league in Las Vegas. All four 2016 draft picks are on the team, along with Colorado native and former Wyoming guard Josh Adams, former Colorado standout Josh Scott and Colorado State product Antwan Scott.


Petr Cornelie, Juancho Hernangomez, Malik Beasley and Jamal Murray will travel with the team to Las Vegas, but Beasley isn’t expected to play. Beasley suffered a stress fracture in his right tibia midway through his freshman year at Florida State and had surgery to prevent long-term issues. He is expected to make a full recovery.


Nuggets fans also will get to see Murray and second-year point guard Emmanuel Mudiay in action. Mudiay averaged 12.8 points as a rookie. Starting shooting guard Gary Harris also is on the summer league roster.


Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette is joining the Nuggets in Las Vegas. Fredette was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2011 and has played for short periods of time with four NBA teams.


Denver’s first game in Las Vegas is next Friday against Minnesota. The Nuggets also will face Memphis and Miami before the tournament begins.

The team will be coached by new Texas Legends head coach Bob MacKinnon, and the club has already arrived in Orlando. The team will practice through Friday before league action kicks off on Saturday morning.

The roster is loaded with players with experience both at big-time programs at the D-I level and also in the D-League, meaning it should be a coachable, competitive group for MacKinnon in his Dallas debut.

BRANDON ASHLEY


A McDonald’s All-American and three-year player at Arizona, Ashley caught the Mavs’ eye last season with his play in the Las Vegas Summer League. He eventually agreed to join Dallas for the preseason before ultimately being waived and playing the 2015-16 season with the Texas Legends in the D-League.


Ashley earned a trip to the D-League All-Star Game (along with his Orlando teammate Vander Blue) by averaging 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds, along with shooting 39.3 percent on 3.6 3-pointers per game. He finished the season with Alba Berlin in Germany, averaging 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in 14 games. His future is as a stretch-power forward, which is why his progress from the 3-point line last season was such a positive for his career. Look for him to continue stretching his range with the Mavs in Orlando.


JALEEL COUSINS


After playing at Texas’ Navarro College, Cousins transferred to and played two years at South Florida before opting to turn pro. In 2015-16, he averaged 8.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game for the Bulls, leading the AAC in block percentage.


If his last name looks familiar, that’s because it is. Jaleel is the little brother of Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins. Jaleel is still only 22 years old, so he has plenty of time to continue developing into an NBA-level talent. If he can demonstrate that he has the ability, an NBA team will have no problem extending an invitation to training camp.

CORY JEFFERSON


One of the most experienced players on the roster, Jefferson played for four years at Baylor and played high school ball in Killeen before being drafted by San Antonio in 2014 and ultimately winding up with the Brooklyn Nets. Jefferson stood out last season in the D-League, averaging 17.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game for the Bakersfield Jam.


The combo forward has a 7-foot wingspan and 37.5-inch vertical leap, meaning he certainly has the length and athleticism required to compete in the NBA. But, like Ashley, Jefferson must prove he’s got the shooting ability to stick in the Association. For what it’s worth, he did improve his 3-point shooting to a robust 40 percent last season with Bakersfield, on 2.4 attempts per game.


SATNAM SINGH


The Mavs’ 2015 second-round draft pick appeared in 19 games for the Legends last season. Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson has said from the beginning that Singh is a long-term project kind of player, as he has yet to turn 21 years old. For a player his size, he’s still quite young.


Singh has a soft shooting touch and he has the size to battle the biggest basketball players in the world, but the Mavs and Legends have spent the last year working on his agility and quickness. We’ll see how far he’s come once the action begins in Florida.

MARQUIS TEAGUE


Teague is another player on this roster with a wealth of experience, beginning with his one-year stay at Kentucky during the 2011-12 season, where he was the starting point guard for the national champions, heading up an offense featuring New Orleans’ Anthony Davis.


Teague was then drafted by the Chicago Bulls, where he played for one season before moving to the Brooklyn Nets via trade. He’s spent the last two seasons playing for the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s D-League affiliate; last season he averaged 15.7 points and 5.9 assists per game with 41.4/38.9 shooting splits. Like Jaleel Cousins, Teague’s older brother, Jeff, is also a star in the NBA. At the helm of this Mavericks offense, though, Marquis will have the opportunity to put up the types of numbers that could make NBA teams come calling this fall.

GAME RULES


· Four 10-minute quarters


· Eight-minute halftime


· Two full timeouts per half


· Two one-minute mandatory TV timeouts per quarter on dead ball at 5:59 and again at


2:59


· A 60-second timeout taken by a team will negate the next mandatory timeout in that


quarter


· Teams will be in the penalty on the 10th team foul of each quarter or second in the last


2:00


· Players foul out on 10th personal foul


· Ten-minute warm-up/intermission between games


· “Advance” Rule in place for last 2:00 of game and overtime


OVERTIME


· Two-minute overtime period


· Each team is allowed one 60-second timeout


· Each team is allowed one advance


· Penalty begins on the 2nd team foul


· NEW: The second overtime period is a ‘modified’ sudden death. Each team will be guaranteed one possession in the sudden death period. For example: if Team A wins the tip and scores two points, the game will continue and Team B will possess the ball with a chance to do the following:


-Score two points (game is now tied and continues to sudden death)


-Score three points (team B wins the game outright)


-Not score and the possession concludes with a defensive rebound, offensive foul, or turnover, in which case Team A wins and the game is over.





COMPETITION FORMAT


· Each team will play five games over the seven-day event


· Standings will be kept over the first six days of the league according to a point system (described below)


· Every team will play their fifth and final game against the opponent seeded most closely to them in the standings


-For example, the two teams with the highest point totals will play in the Championship game; the teams with the third and fourth-highest point totals play in a third place game, etc.


POINT SYSTEM


· Standings over the first six days of the league will be kept using an EIGHT-POINT SYSTEM. In this system, eight points are awarded each game and distributed as follows:


-Four points for winning the game


-One point for every quarter a team wins (in the event of a tied quarter, both teams will receive 0.5 points)


· As a result, the winning team in each game can collect between five to eight points, while the losing team can collect from zero to three points.





CHAMPIONSHIP SEEDING CRITERIA


· Day seven Championship seeding will be determined by a team’s total points in the league standings


· In the event of a tie, the following tie-breaker steps will be in place:


Tiebreaker 1: Total point differential


Tiebreaker 2: Total points allowed


Tiebreaker 3: Coin flip


· NOTE – Overall or head-to-head win/loss record will NOT impact championship day seeding. Seeding will be determined solely by the criteria above.

Raptors Announce NBA Summer League Roster


The Toronto Raptors announced Thursday their 15-man roster for Samsung NBA Summer League 2016 in Las Vegas.


First-round draft picks Jakob Poeltl (YAH-cub PUHR-tuhl) and Pascal Siakam (Pass-CAL See-AH-kum) along with
current Raptors Bruno Caboclo (cuh-BO-clo), Norman Powell and Delon Wright will headline this year’s squad. Raptors assistant coach/player development Jama Mahlalela (MAH-la-LAY-lah) will serve as the team’s head coach.


Poeltl played two seasons at Utah and one season (2013-14) for the Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions in his native
Austria. He was the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year, an AP second-team All-America and the recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award for the nation's top centre. Poeltl averaged 17.2 points (second in the Pac-12), 9.1 rebounds (fourth in the conference) and 1.6 blocks (eighth in the Pac-12) in 36 games this past season. He ranked first in the Pac-12 and seventh in the nation in field goal percentage (.646).


Siakam played two seasons at New Mexico State. He averaged 20.3 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 34
games in 2015-16 en route to unanimous Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year honours. He led the nation with 27 double-doubles. The native of Cameroon was the 2015 WAC Freshman of the Year, averaging 12.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 34 outings. He ranked first in the conference in field goal percentage (.572) and blocked shots.


Caboclo will make his third appearance in Las Vegas at NBA Summer League. He averaged 12.0 points (second
on the team), 4.2 rebounds and 29.4 minutes in five games with the Raptors’ entry last year.


Powell was named to the All-NBA Summer League 2015 First Team after averaging a team-high 18.3 points in
four games. During his rookie season, Powell averaged 5.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 14.8 minutes in 49 games (24
starts). He also appeared in 18 postseason games, scoring 13 points in Game 7 versus Indiana.


Wright returns to NBA Summer League after averaging 9.5 points, 5.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 21.0 minutes in two
games last summer. He averaged 3.8 points, 1.4 rebounds and 8.5 minutes in 27 games (one start) during his rookie campaign with the Raptors. Wright appeared in nine playoffs contests.


NBA Summer League 2016 in Las Vegas will feature 24 teams participating in a tournament-style schedule which
culminates with a Championship Game for the fourth consecutive year. Teams will compete in three preliminary round games from July 8-12, before being seeded in a tournament that starts July 13 and concludes with the Championship Game on July 18. Each team is guaranteed to play at least five games.


This year marks Toronto’s ninth appearance at NBA Summer League in Las Vegas (2006, 2008-10, 2012-15).
The Raptors finished NBA Summer League 2015 with a 3-2 record and hold an overall mark of 20-20 (.500) at the event.


Toronto opens the preliminary round Friday, July 8 versus the Sacramento Kings at Cox Pavilion (7 p.m. PT / 10 p.m. ET).

Houston Rockets finalize Summer League roster. Who's Gary Payton II's competition?


The Houston Rockets have finalized their NBA Summer League roster for 2016 and it includes Gary Payton II along with some other big names. Houston owns the highest winning percentage of any team in Summer League history and they should be one of the top teams again this year with big names like Michael Beasley and K.J. McDaniels joining soon-to-be second year vets Sam Dekker and Montrezl Harrell on the roster. Check out the full roster in Houston’s release.


Gary Payton II joins the roster after he signed a three-year deal with Houston just minutes after going undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft. Experts projected him to be a mid-to-late second round pick and The Rockets jumped on the opportunity to sign him as an undrafted free agent. With the NBA currently in the midst of a free agency frenzy it is impossible to tell how their roster will end up looking by the time the season starts. But, the first steps to making the team for Gary Payton II is by having a good showing in Las Vegas, at the summer league.


Payton's main competition for making The Rockets regular season roster will be Isaiah Taylor, a talented point guard from Texas who skipped his senior season to declare for the draft and also surprisingly went undrafted. Isaiah Taylor, like Gary Payton II, signed a partially guaranteed deal with The Rockets.




With both players receving partially guarenteed deals, a rarity for undrafted free agents, they appear to be priorities for Houston's front office. It will be interesting to keep an eye on their performances at the NBA summer league and with all games broadcast on ESPN networks be sure to tune in to watch Gary Payton II.

2016 NBA Summer League: Mid-major players on summer rosters


For many players from mid-major schools, the journey to the NBA drags on, now in the form of a summer league invitation. This is where players can showcase their skills against others hoping for a coveted roster spot.


Thomas Walkup, Mamadou Ndiaye, Stefan Jankovic and AJ English are just a few of the notable signings from players who went undrafted on Thursday.


Although he is mostly known for his high basketball IQ, lumberjack beard and March Madness success, Walkup could be more than that and could slide into multiple positions for the Warriors, who have extended him an invite. He’s a proven defender and is comfortable shooting from behind the arc, but his lack of size may become a limitation in the NBA.


The Warriors also grabbed an enticing center in UC-Irvine’s Ndiaye. He hovers six inches above first-round pick Thon Maker and has the college experience that Maker lacks. Though he is a raw talent and an inconsistent shooter, Ndiaye could win many battles of the boards in the future.


Meanwhile, the Heat added Jankovic, a 6-11 Canadian forward with experience playing for both Missouri and Hawaii. He has improved from a lowly bench player for Mizzou to a star Rainbow Warrior who played a major role in knocking of Cal in the NCAA Tournament. With an average of 15.6 points per game and six rebounds, Jankovic could become an honorable fill in for Heat big men who may leave in free agency.

Hornets Announce 2016 Orlando Pro Summer League Roster


June 28, 2016 – The Charlotte Hornets announced today the team’s 13-man roster for the 2016 Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League beginning July 2. For the third consecutive year, Hornets Associate Head Coach Patrick Ewing will serve as head coach of the team’s summer league squad. The team’s full roster is listed below.

Prior to leaving for Orlando, the Hornets will hold a four-day mini-camp at the Novant Health Training Center inside Time Warner Cable Arena from Tuesday, June 28 – Friday, July 1. Media is advised to arrive each day by 12 p.m. Media attending practices should enter through the media/employee entrance on the Fifth Street side of Time Warner Cable Arena and proceed to the Lowe’s Home Court area to await a member of the communications staff.

Following the mini-camp in Charlotte, the Hornets will open their Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League schedule on Saturday, July 2 against the Orlando Magic – White squad at 11 a.m. Charlotte will also play Indiana (Sunday, July 3 at 1 p.m.), Oklahoma City (Monday, July 4 at 5 p.m.) and Dallas (Wednesday, July 6 at 3 p.m.). The Hornets’ fifth game will be on Friday, July 8, against an opponent to be determined by the standings after the first four games.


Each team will play five games over the seven-day event, with a championship day being played on the final day of the league. A point system will establish the standings leading up to the final day, with eight points awarded each game based on: four points for winning the game and one point for winning a quarter (in the event of a tied quarter, each team will receive 0.5 points). In the event of ties in seeding heading into championship day, three tiebreakers will be in place: 1) total point differential; 2) total points allowed; 3) coin flip.


NBA TV will televise 24 games of the Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League games, including all five games of the Charlotte Hornets schedule.

NBA Summer League 2016: Utah Jazz roster headlined by Trey Lyles, Olivier Hanlan, J.J. O'Brien


The Utah Jazz are participating in two of the three major NBA Summer Leagues again this off-season, the three game showcase in Salt Lake City, and then the more major three games plus a tournament deal in Las Vegas. Like most summer leagues before, we've seen the Jazz bring in a lot of players and really give everyone a shot -- like it's a kids soccer league. As a result, the team has never advanced in the Vegas tournament. And very rarely have we seen a Jazzman make a big mark. More often than not if a player is playing well, he will only play in the least amount of games possible. Back in the Rocky Mountain Revue days second year point guard Deron Williams even played in two games. Last season Rodney Hood and Dante Exum were both pulled early and did not need to risk anything by playing in any other meaningless games. We may see that again this season if one or more players really turns up and shows what they can do -- I'm looking at you #MapleMamba. (Who, once again, decided not to play for Team Canada.)


The entire roster hasn't been released yet -- and in past summers the roster between the two leagues hasn't remained completely the same. As a result, Utah has brought in 17, 19, 16, and 17 players over the last four summers. (The fact that guys will play for more than one team in a summer is why these numbers are so high. You do the agents some favors at this time of the year.) So far we know only of eight guys. Here they are:

The Utah Jazz have already seen most of these players before. Trey Lyles was a pre-draft workout, played in summer league last year, went through training camp, and eventually made the team. J.J. O'Brien had the similar experience with the added benefit of also playing for the Jazz NBA DL team too! Tibor Pleiss went through training camp and made the team. Olivier Hanlan was a pre-draft workout and played in summer league last year. Marcus Paige, Tyrone Wallace, and Quincy Ford were all brought in for pre-draft workouts this year; two of them were drafted by the Jazz as well.


There are two guys coming in who the team hasn't officially seen before: Joel Bolomboy and Bangaly Fofana are both from outside the Jazz program. That's okay, I am certain the scouts have seen plenty of both. Bolomboy went to college in-state at Weber St. And Fofana is a bigman from France, and the team clearly has eyes out there.


Looking at the roster right now there's a glaring hole at shooting guard. There are plenty of bigs. There are three point guards who all want the ball in their hands. In a wing oriented league the Jazz aren't really bringing much to the table right now with O'Brien and Ford. Of course, it's just Summer League, so why am I worried?


This is going to be an important summer league for all players, but for a bunch of these guys in particular.


For Hanlan this is a measuring stick to see what progress he made in a year. He was drafted by the Jazz and did not shoot well when the games counted in the Summer League (even Jared Cunningham beat him out of playing time). He spent the last year playing professionally in Latvia, and had an okay season. But if he wants to stay with the Jazz program he's going to have to prove that he is worth it. He will be challenged by two fresh college players with a lot of playing time under their belts. One is a shooter (Paige), the other a defender (Wallace). It's going to be -- in my mind -- the fight to watch this summer.
J.J. O'Brien has been busy. Not only did he play in the NBA for the Jazz and in the DL for the Stamps last season, he already spent part of this summer trying out for the San Antonio Spurs in their Free Agent Minicamp. (He didn't work out for the Jazz in theirs.) He got all the playing time in the world with the Stampede and his potential as a "Three and D" player still exists -- even if he didn't do much with his shot in the NBA last year. He, like most undrafted players, is still playing for financial security.
Tibor Pleiss has money on the Jazz books already for next season, a cool $3 million. The problem with Tibor is that he came to America to play, not just get paid. He said as much in his exit interview. I like his skills, and his size really can't be beat. But he's not going to be content with playing in the NBA DL all next year. He could sit on the bench in Europe and get paid more. If he can show the Jazz that he's an NBA rotation guy then it may precipitate some changes with the roster. But he'd need to have a big summer league for that to even be on the table.
Two of these guys are possible assets to any trade. One of them could be a cheap wing replacement if moves are made.


The only lotto pick on the team (right now) is Trey Lyles. I expect him to play in one or two games tops. If he's not dominant enough to have the team keep him out of the rest of the summer then we have to worry a little.


Anyway I wonder who else the team will bring in to round out this roster. I'm expecting some guys with NBA experience who are trying to hang on in the league, a few more undrafted guys, and maybe another international player. As always, we'll fill in you as the news is released.

2016 NBA Summer League: Big Ten Players On Summer League Rosters


Although the NBA Draft is the event that gets the majority of the offseason attention, the Summer League is actually when players start to earn their fill at the next level. It's a chance to validate their selection on the court and for other players to earn their way onto NBA rosters. With this in mind, let's take a look at some of the Big Ten players that will be playing in the NBA Summer League this season.


However, before we dive in, just a few things to remember.


First, making a Summer League team in no way guarantees a player who will make an actual NBA roster. In fact, the majority of the players who compete in the Summer League will not play in next year's NBA season. Nonetheless, many do earn roster spots or find their way into the D-League.


Additionally, the list also clarifies that if a team is participating in both the Orlando and Las Vegas Summer Leagues, which event the player will be participating in with that team. Since there are actually several different events, keep in mind that your favorite player may only be participating in one.


Finally, not all the Summer League rosters are confirmed at this point, so this list will continue to grow and change in the coming weeks. We have also placed an asterisk next to players names who are probable, but have not been officially announced. These are your 2016 Big Ten NBA Draft picks.

Heat summer-league roster limited on NBA experience


The Miami Heat released their summer-league roster Wednesday, with 2015-16 roster components Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson and Briante Weber the only players on the 19-player roster with NBA experience.


Of the 19 players, three will play for the Heat either in the Orlando Pro Summer League or the Las Vegas NBA Summer League.


While the other 16 are not designated with such limitations, the Heat announced that Winslow, Richardson and Weber would only play a limited schedule.


Assistant coach Juwan Howard will coach the Heat in summer league, with his son Juwan Howard Jr., the former Detroit Mercy guard, among the players on the roster.


Also on the roster will be Shawn Jones, the former Middle Tennessee forward out of Hialeah High School who was with the Heat during training camp in 2014 and later spent that season with the Heat's NBA Development League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He is scheduled for play for the Heat in Orlando only.

Former Florida State forward Okaro White will play for the Heat's summer-league team in Las Vegas only.


The Heat currently are working through summer camp at AmericanAirlines Arena before opening play in Orlando at 5 p.m. Saturday against a similar group of rookies and young players from the Los Angeles Clippers. The Orlando summer league is held on the Orlando Magic's practice court at the Amway Center and is closed to the public, but will be televised on NBA TV. The Heat then will move on Las Vegas, with their first game scheduled there for July 9, with those game on the campus of the University of Las Vegas open to the public.

Press Release: Clippers Announce Orlando Pro Summer League Roster and Schedule

The Los Angeles Clippers today announced their roster for the 2016 Southwest Airlines Pro Summer League in Orlando. For the second straight year, the Clippers will participate in the league from July 2 - 8 at Amway Center. The team is highlighted by current Clippers C.J. Wilcox and Branden Dawson, plus 2016 draft picks Brice Johnson, David Michineau and Diamond Stone.


In the 2015 Orlando Pro Summer League, Wilcox posted averages of 14.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals in 32.0 minutes of play, while Dawson averaged 12.8 points and 10.3 rebounds.


Johnson, the 25th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, was a consensus First Team All-American at North Carolina his senior season. He averaged 17.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 40 games (all starts), helping lead the Tar Heels to the NCAA National Championship Game. Michineau, the 39th overall pick in the draft, has spent the last three seasons with ES Chalon-Sur-Saone in France. In three seasons with Chalon, he averaged 4.2 points and 1.3 assists. Stone, the 40th overall pick, played one season at the University of Maryland, where he was named the AP Big Ten Newcomer in 2016. The Milwaukee native averaged 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 35 games (all starts), helping lead the Terrapins to the Sweet Sixteen.

Each team will play five games over the seven-day event, with the final standings decided by a Championship Day on the final day of the league. A point system will establish the standings leading up to the final day, with eight points awarded each game based on: four points for winning the game and one point for winning a quarter (in the event of a tied quarter, each team will receive 0.5 points). In the event of ties in seeding heading into championship day, three tiebreakers will be in place: 1) total point differential; 2) total points allowed; 3) coin flip.


Due to space limitations, the event is not open to the public and will be open only to the media and professional team/league personnel.

A bevy of bigs on Pistons Summer League roster as SVG looks for frontcourt depth


ORLANDO – For Stanley Johnson, it’s about developing those parts of his game that will allow him to take the next leap in a career bristling with promise. For Darrun Hilliard, it will be getting more comfortable and putting himself in position to challenge for a Pistons rotation spot.


For Henry Ellenson, it will be taking the baby steps all teens who suddenly find themselves in a man’s world must experience to set their careers on the right path. For fellow rookie Michael Gbinije, it will be proving his senior-year transition to point guard at Syracuse can carry over to the NBA.


For pretty much everyone else, Summer League for those who’ve gathered under the Pistons umbrella in central Florida is about converting a Hail Mary pass to win a job to the NBA or, more likely, ensuring themselves a job somewhere else where basketball can pay the bills.


And plenty of the players who fall under that category are power forwards or centers – seven of them in addition to Ellenson – as the Pistons audition them to perhaps win a roster spot. Stan Van Gundy said last week the Pistons will add two big men this off-season. One will surely come via trade or free agency and be expected to fit into the rotation, but the other will be mostly for depth in case of injury and probably will be on a veteran minimum contract.


Here’s a look at the players assembled here who began practicing Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s Summer League opener:


Stanley Johnson – A 6-foot-7 small forward coming off his rookie year with the Pistons as the No. 8 pick in the 2015 NBA draft after a freshman season at Arizona. Johnson, 20, averaged 8.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in 23 minutes a game as a rookie. He averaged 10.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists in nine February games before a shoulder injury caused him to miss eight games.


Darrun Hilliard – A 6-foot-6 shooting guard drafted 38th overall in the 2015 draft after a four-year career at Villanova. Hilliard, 23, averaged 4.0 points in 38 games and shot 38 percent from the 3-point arc.


Henry Ellenson – A 6-foot-11½ power forward drafted No. 18 by the Pistons in the 2016 draft after averaging 17 points and 9.7 rebounds a game. Ellenson was a five-star recruit ranked the No. 11 prospect in the country coming out of tiny Rice Lake, Wis., in the high school class of 2015.


Michael Gbinije – A 6-foot-7 guard drafted 49th overall by the Pistons in the 2016 NBA draft, Gbinije, 24, began his college career at Duke before transferring to Syracuse for his final three seasons. Transitioned to point guard as a senior and averaged 17.5 points and 4.3 assists in 38 minutes a game for the Orange.


Lorenzo Brown – A 6-foot-5 point guard drafted 52nd overall by Minnesota in 2013 after his junior season at North Carolina State. Brown has played 63 NBA games over the past three seasons for Philadelphia, Minnesota and Phoenix and finished the 2015-16 season with the Pistons.


Kadeem Jack – A 6-foot-9 power forward out of Rutgers who went undrafted in 2015. Jackson spent the past season playing for Fort Wayne of the D-League, averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in only 14 minutes a game. Jack participated in a camp for free agents the Pistons held earlier this month in Auburn Hills.


Chavaughn Lewis – A 6-foot-5 shooting guard who went undrafted out of Marist – where he played for Pistons general manager Jeff Bower – in 2015. He averaged 11.5 points a game last season for Juventus in the Lithuanian pro league.


Kammeon Holsey – A 6-foot-8 power forward who went undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2014, Holsey also played for the Pistons in 2015 Summer League. He averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds in 21 minutes a game last season for the Grand Rapids Drive, Pistons D-League affiliate.


Derrick Nix – A 6-foot-9 center who went undrafted out of Michigan State in 2013, Nix is a Detroit native and another participant in the free-agent camp the Pistons held in early June. He averaged 8.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 16 minutes in 20 games late in the season while playing in the Latvian pro league.


Brandon Davies – A 6-foot-10 power forward/center who went undrafted out of BYU in 2013 but stuck in the NBA for two seasons with Philadelphia and Brooklyn,
appearing in 78 games with six starts. He led his Italian team, Varese, in scoring (13.3) and rebounding (6.5) in 26 minutes a game last season.


Tekele Cotton – A 6-foot-3 shooting guard who went undrafted out of Wichita State in 2015, Cotton averaged 8.8 points as the starting shooting guard for Ludwigsburg in the German pro league.


Phil Pressey – A 5-foot-11 point guard who went undrafted out of Missouri in 2013, Pressey also participated in the free-agent camp the Pistons hosted earlier this month. He spent two seasons with the Boston Celtics, starting 11 games as a rookie, and played with both Philadelphia and Phoenix last season.


Kaleb Tarczewski – A 7-foot-0 center who went undrafted out of Arizona in the 2016 draft, Tarczewski was a four-year starter who was teammates with Stanley Johnson in 2014-15 under Sean Miller at Arizona. He averaged 9.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots as a senior.


Nikola Jovanovic – A 6-foot-11 power forward who went undrafted out of Southern Cal, Jovanovic, 22, is a native of Serbia. He averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds a game last season for the Trojans.Jordan Bachynski – A 7-foot-2 center who went undrafted out of Arizona State in 2014,

BUCKS BEGIN SUMMER LEAGUE PLAY JULY 8 IN LAS VEGAS


The National Basketball Association released the 2016 Samsung NBA Summer League schedule today, with the Bucks slated to open their Summer League play on Friday, July 8, at 5 p.m. CT against the entry from the newly-crowned NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers. The Bucks will also play opening round games against the NBA D-League Select team (Sunday, July 10, at 3:30 p.m. CT) and Memphis Grizzlies (Monday, July 11, at 3 p.m. CT).


This marks the third consecutive year in which the Bucks and Cavaliers will square off in Las Vegas. The matchup two years ago featured the top two picks from the 2014 NBA Draft – Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker – in the second-most-viewed NBA Summer League telecast game of all time.


For the fourth consecutive year, the event will feature a tournament-style schedule, culminating in the crowning of the Samsung NBA Summer League Champion on Monday, July 18. Each of the 24 participating teams will play three games apiece from July 8-12 before being seeded in the tournament, which tips off on July 13 and runs through the Championship Game on July 18. Each team will play no fewer than five games during the event. In all, the Samsung NBA Summer League will feature 67 games scheduled over 11 days at the COX Pavilion and Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.


The Bucks will announce their 2016 NBA Summer League roster at a later date.

Maodo Lo set to play with Philadelphia 76ers in NBA Summer League


Maodo Lo, CC '16, will be joining the Philadelphia 76ers Summer League teams in both Utah and Las Vegas in July, ESPN’s Fran Franschilla first reported.


Columbia's third-highest all-time scorer, Lo will first head to Utah to play alongside number one overall pick Ben Simmons. Lo will then head to Las Vegas, as he hopes to make the 76ers' training camp roster after going undrafted this past Thursday.


According to LibertyBallers.com’s Max Rappaport, it’s not uncommon for NBA teams to sign players for both the Utah and Las Vegas summer stops. Rappaport explained that Jahlil Okafor, the 76ers’ first-round pick in 2015, and undrafted guard TJ McConnell played in both last year.


Okafor went on to average 17.5 points per game during the regular season, while McConnell earned a roster spot and then started for a portion of the year.


That prospect may seem unlikely for Lo nearly four months before the regular season begins, but Rappaport believes that the Berlin native could have a future with the 76ers beyond his stint in July.


“I think he has a nice shot of making training camp, because our (Philadelphia’s) roster is loaded in the front court right now,” he said. “We can carry 20 for camp, and if he plays well in summer league, I'm sure they'll sign him to one of those 4-year non-guaranteed deals and see if he can cut it in camp.”


Rappaport added that given the Sixers’ struggles from the perimeter, Lo could bring a much-needed ability to stretch the floor at the point guard position. A unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in 2015-16, Lo owns the program record with 277 career three-pointers field goals.


Utah Summer League takes place from July 4-7 in Salt Lake City. Las Vegas Summer League begins on July 8. Both events will be aired on NBA TV.

NORTHWESTERN'S TRE DEMPS JOINS BULLS' SUMMER LEAGUE ROSTER


From Chicago's Big Ten Team to Chicago's NBA team.


Former Northwestern guard Tre Demps will play for the Bulls in this offseason's Summer League in Las Vegas.


Demps spent four seasons in Evanston and became quite a prolific scorer, averaging 15.7 points per game as a senior last season after averaging 12.5 points per game and 11 points per game during his junior and sophomore seasons, respectively. Last season, Demps connected on 39.8 percent of his field-goal attempts and shot 33.2 percent from behind the 3-point line, averages down from the previous season.


Demps had some incredible scoring performances last season, including a 30-point effort on the road against then-No. 3 Iowa that featured six made 3-pointers, a career high he matched with six triples in a win over Rutgers later in the season.


Demps is the son of New Orleans Pelicans general manager Dell Demps.
