"If its about winning championships, the answer is Golden St. Thompson is signed for 3 more years, Green for 4. Very team friendly deals when you consider the outrageous dollars being given to others that aren't close to their talents. Curry will get his extension after next season. Livingston is already signed for next season at a bargain, as is Iguodala. If they sign Durant, they would get rid of Barnes and Bogut. Ezeli still playing on a cheap contract.
As far as "gutting" the team, its not as if they can't find people to take the place of the current bench players. I love Barbosa, but are you telling me a guy like that can't be replaced? Speights, Ezeli? They just drafted a center that can probably do the things Ezeli can, and drafted a nice long/athletic wing player out of UNLV. The bench players are far from irreplaceable. Igguodala isn't getting any younger, and is showing his age. I love the guy, but he can't play forever.
As far as replenishing the roster, they have shown that they don't need high lottery picks to draft well. Thompson a #11, Green a 2nd rounder. Ezeli an end of 1st Rd pick. With a core of Curry, Thompson, Greem, and Durant they can win multiple titles in the next 3-4 years. After that, with the cap going up, it will take some maneuvering to keep the core intact. But if they are winning championships, maybe they find a way to keep it intact. Fill in with vets willing to take a bit less to win a title, happens often.
He won't have to be the man at GS, carrying a heavy load like he did with OKC. He will still get his shots and numbers with the unselfish style GS plays. As West has suggested, less wear and tear on his body. This notion that a player has to stay with the same franchise his entire career is ridiculous. Many stars have changed teams, won championships, and haven't had their repuattions tarnished. Jabbar played for Milwaukee, Shaq moved, countelss others have done the same thing. But Durant somehow "owes" it to OKC to stay? He's given that franchise 9 years. That's plenty. Its OK for James to recruit and form a Big 3, its OK for Boston to form a Big 3 and win a title, its OK for Cleveland to lead the league in luxury tax to help win a title. But for some reason, Durant must be tied to the same franchise for his entire career, despite many others in the past have changed teams to improve their chances at a title.
Personally I think he's going back to OKC. But if he decides to change teams, I don't see how he can be criticized when you consider the history of the league. He's given that franchsie the prime of his career, he's more than earned the right to play where he wants if winning the championship(s) is his main goal."
I wrote this yesterday. This makes perfect sense. He will opt out not to leave, but to get the max he can get. He is with the Dubs for the long haul.
