70 hot dogs. Let me write that again: On the 4th of July, 2016, professional eater Joey Chestnut regained the International Hot Dog Eating Contest by shoving into his stomach 70 different hot dogs, breaking his own record of 69 that he set in 2013. Second-placed Matt Stonie, who won the competition last year, could only manage 53.

It's so clear that humans aren't supposed to eat that many hot dogs (at least not all at once), but that doesn't seem to have bothered Chestnut too much.

Average of 7 per minute. I couldn't eat 7 in an hour, and maybe all day as I would get burnt out on dawgs.

Hes got that dipping em technique down to a T, and that must be the way to go because he won by 17 dogs, which is more than just about anyone can eat. Ridiculous...

They actually use things like grape juice in some competitions as a side fluid to drown out the taste.

Wasn't a poster on here really big into competitive eating?

Seems like that would make for a good documentary. Similar to how "Word Wars" captured the world of competitive scrabble.

Really? Can't stand that guy.

Perhaps trying to down 70 hotdogs in 12 minutes would have an effect on your health and ultimately your brain cells.

Yea, me either.

they don't talk about it, but they have to go puke and be monitored for awhile I would assume. Have to feel like ass for a few days. But, Cheanut did set the world record of 73.5 dogs just a week and a half before the contest yesterday.

I would think they top 2 get at least that in appearance fees also. I would think Chesnut and a few others could get appearance fees at just about any eating contest. I know if I held one I'd pay him to show up for publicity alone.

tough way to make a living ....people forget that these fools also have to train for these events.... training has to be brutal in itself..How do you even have a normal meal being a Pro ?

The top ones (maybe eight to 10 in the world) are drinking up to three gallons of water in under three minutes, then throwing it all up. All other consumption for the day can be completely normal (in some ways it's professional bulimia as much as professional eating). Practicing with 50+ hot dogs is only done occasionally. I could never even get to half that much water, but could still manage 60 to 80% of their levels in typical contests. Would usually just use buffet comps to help prepare.

A lot of the training should actually help anyone lose weight. Want the water to come up easy, so won't want to eat anything before, then don't want to eat anything else for a little while after. It's a sure way to skip meals. If practicing with food, use as much fruit, veggies and protein as possible instead of fat, sugar and starch.

Given that each hot dog and bun is 100g, 70 should have seemed possible: 15 pounds is within his limits and Joey is bar far the most efficient at getting them down. Like always, there was money to be won betting it for those paying attention: despite losing last year, he was credited with 75 at his qualifier. Even the year he lost, the smart money was on Chestnut -600 and Stonie +9 (that spread and money line is completely off). For next year look to bet the field at +9.5 depending on how the year plays out. Guy who came in third is young and went from something like 13 in his first try to 42.

Did some Japanese TV shows in 2014-15 that paid very well (and a show for Netflix that didn't pay well because I thought it was just for youtube), then took off six months from any practicing. Now with a few summer almost completely free trying to see if I can get it back. Been doing about 4.5 Liters every morning for the past couple weeks in about 10 minutes, then throwing up about 1/3 of it. Add in some buffets and may as well try to qualify next year.

Ryan still talks about how you mowed everyone down easily at the Ellis Island Contest yrs ago. Really impressive Tom at what level you are able to attain when your competing, hope all is good with you.
