Only spent a few days there, in Atlantic Beach or something like that but my impression was that it is an exceptionally nice area. People were very friendly and scenery beautiful. Jeff Gordon had a car lot there, Dawson's Creek was filmed there and I'd definitely recommend an extended visit to "audition" it as retirement cuz its definitely got serious potential to be a "hidden jewel".
Several sections of South & North Carolina, like this.....people do not give them enough consideration as retirement spots.
I'd recommend retiring to somewhere outside of USA though, I'd study the least expensive places then go "audition" those.

What was the first or major thing that brought Wilmington into consideration?
Just curious because living in this area(3.5 hrs or less from there), it doesn't even come up to most as places to visit, much less move to and start over and live.
