any car guys here or mechanics??? (looking at going after a refund)

so heres some back story. Last year sometime around may or june we took my fiances car back to the dealership she bought it from. Had all types of engine lights coming on (check engine, check emissions, check vsa, check hill assistance). The guy who looked over the car told us she was driving too many highway miles (its a 2012 honda insight). We said too many highway miles, thats ridiculous. He told us we were burning off oil at a fast rate and because of that, we were getting these warnings. We did an oil change and a couple months later, the lights were back on. We took it to a different honda dealership closer to our new house when the problem reoccurred. They too told us we were low on oil and needed an oil change. Within a month or 6 weeks were back in will all the lights and he said it was just the car letting you know to add oil. Now there would be times driving when the car would just die on you. get up to 30-40 mph and could not accelerate and would slowly power down. Took it back in and this time said it was a spark plug issue not properly powering everything, so they changed it out. sure as shit we had the issues pop up again, and we were back in. This time there was also a factory recall on all the air bags in her car, so her car was at the dealership for 2 months, when it was all done, they said it was low oil and topped us off. within less than 1 month (less than 1,000 miles), we were back in again. This time we told them were sick of this just needs oil bullshit, her car has gone through 3-4 oil changes without mine getting one. The manager took the car himself and hooked it up for codes. after waiting about 2 hrs said they were going to have to put us in a rental and take it apart. next day later he calls back saying there is now a recall on a piston issue for this car, causing oil to leak and burn off at a fast rate. They had the car for 5-6 days took it apart and replaced various things.


my thing is I want to call honda and get some type of refund. We paid for a bunch of oil changes, diagnostic fees etc over the course of 1 year coming in and complaining about the same issue before it was finally fixed. For the cost out of our pocket and time/energy wasted, I think they owe us a few hundred dollars.

Sounds like it's been several months now since you purchased. zero chance of getting a refund. Had you asked for a refund that very first time taking it back, you may have had a chance if you made a big enough fuss over it. Calling Honda isn't going to do anything unless it's recall related.

Best to really do your due diligence before buying a used vehicle. Also a good idea to have a mechanic of your own inspect the car before purchase.

They were not properly diagnosing the issue with the car so i kept paying for the same service and over again. The fact that it was a factory issue/warranty issue, i think i should be paid back for all of those visits, paying for oil changes after 1000 miles etc...

Check your states lemon laws.

Id start off by talking to the store manager in person. If he's not helpful then i would ask for his boss' email and phone number.

It IS "Recall Related".

Manufacturer (eventually) identified a problem that was the direct cause of all your previous expenses.

Feels "Cut & Dried" to me.

Especially if there any weight to JC's feeling that "Recall Related" has some sway.

Me personally though, before contacting Honda I'd search my brain for ONE person you encountered within your massive amount of time at the Dealerships who struck you as maybe capable of having some empathy & intelligence...mostly maybe compassion thus might have your back here, accomplish that refund more swiftly and with the least amount of hassle.

Just a thought.

I'd persue a refund here with Vigor though. The Recalled Sitchoo, them not uncovering that problem until they did.

This cost you. Bigtime. Massive Frustration and time + some money. I'd be getting a refund here. or "die trying" as is said.

agreed, we never really got anywhere until we were pretty much in full bitch mode from all the frustration we had built up, and when that happened, we dealt directly with the service manager for the dealership, he uncovered the issue and the recall on the car and got the fix/work done. Im going to imagine any type of refund is going to have to come from corporate. I had a kind of similar issue with a chevy i bought where i was suppose to have free tire rotations/oil changes for said time, but when i went in, nothing was tagged to my account. so i paid the first 3-4 times out of pocket, before i made a big deal about it and my maintenance package was located, then i had to go through chevy corporate to get me back paid.

I would handle it like this.

talk to that manager that helped you out and fixed it. Tell him your frustrations but at the same time appreciate his efforts to get your problems solved. Tell him what you are looking for out of HONDA, NOT xyz honda dealership. He should be able to speak with a either a warranty or service rep (employee of Honda motor co.) and start some sort of dialogue.

You our have a strong case on your side IF you can show what it cost you. If you can produce receipts then I think you have a right to even sue for those funds if need be.

Lemon law you would have needed to start a transcript early on and after the third time claim lemon law. Might be too late now.

All of the work has been done at a honda dealership besides 1 oil change since we started doing all these visits, so they will have it all on record. I do believe I will call up and speak to the manager about contact honda about getting reimbursed for the previous purchases that were well before any scheduled time or mileage requirement

You "guyz" deserve a Refund in this instance. You Guys have embarked on a path of much responsibility, New House etc. you don't deserve to be jacked around on this deal.

You Deserve a fucking refund. The Ordeal that cost you Good People who are trying so hard with so much on your plate the $$$ invested, time and frustration was later ID'd to be due to the problem identified IN THE FUCKING RECALL.

A LOT less chance of catching a Criminal Charge.

dont anticipate that. Try to find credit card statements or something. Take that bull by the horns and don't give that dealership the pleasure of holding the cards.
