History at the Olympics:

Despite playing their first international match against England in 1920 and the women's game being played at the Olympics since 1996, France only made their debut in the Olympics in 2012.

Drawn into a group with the United States, Colombia and North Korea, France qualified for the knockout stages with wins over the latter two.

Les Bleues beat Sweden in the quarterfinals, putting them in position to medal in their maiden Olympic voyage, but losses to Japan in the semifinal and Canada in the bronze medal game meant France just missed the podium.

The fourth-place finish marks their highest in any major competitions, tied with a fourth-place finish in the 2011 Women's World Cup.

Olympic Rematch:

During the 2012 Summer Games in London, France made their Olympic debut against the United States at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Les Bleues got off to a dream start building a 2-0 lead against the WNT after only 14 minutes through Gaetane Thiney and Marie-Laure Delie.

Abby Wambach scored five minutes later and Alex Morgan leveled things in the 32nd minute, leaving the scored tied at the break.

Carli Lloyd, who had come on early as a substitute for the injured Shannon Boxx, put the WNT ahead in the 56th minute.

Alex Morgan then, a few minutes later, PUT IT ON FRANCE, kicking the ball into the goal to give the United States a 4-2 victory.

A Golden Generation?

Despite never winning a major competition, Les Bleues enter the Olympics ranked third in the women's FIFA rankings, a spot they have held since 2014 and their highest ever, thanks in large part to players that make up their Olympic roster.

Six of the top 10 goal scorers in French history will be part of the roster in Brazil.

Forwards Marie-Laure Delie, Elodie Thomas and Eugenie Le Sommer, as well as midfielders Camille Abily, Louisa Necib, and Elise Bussaglia have combined to score 241 goals between them.

In addition to the attacking prowess, defender Wendie Renard and goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi bring Olympic experience to the backline.

UEFA Women's Euro Qualifying:

France has already qualified for the European Championship next summer from Group 3 with a game to play. Unbeaten in all seven games, France are eight points clear of Ukraine, having scored 21 goals and kept their opponents completely off the score sheet. Sixteen teams will qualify for the European Championships hosted in the Netherlands, and France will be one of the favorites as they look to improve on a quarterfinal finish in 2013.

French Domestic League:

Part of the success the French team has seen during the past few years is influenced by the high standard of play in their domestic league. The Championnat de France de Football Feminin is widely considered as one of the best leagues in the world, and 16 of the 18 players in Brazil play in the division. Reigning champions Lyon are the most successful club in the country, winning the domestic title on 14 occasions and is the only club in France to win the UEFA Women's Champions League, most recently this past season. The league may be familiar to fans of the United States, as Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe played for Lyon while Allie Long, Lindsey Horan, and Tobin Heath played for Paris Saint-Germain.

The United States and France are both coming off solid wins

The United States kicked off their Olympic tournament with a solid, not terribly flashy 2-0 win over New Zealand.

Now they face their biggest opponent in Group G, France.

A win against France would position the U.S. to take the group with all nine points, assuming they can then repeat their handling of Colombia from April, when they were easily triumphant in back-to-back friendlies.

Finishing first in group allows the U.S. to avoid the winner of Group F in quarterfinals, likely to be Germany.

Coming out of the New Zealand game, there are some upsides and downsides.

Upside: Tobin Heath is still on her NWSL form, where she was kicking ass anywhere and everywhere for the Portland Thorns.

Downside: Mal Pugh had a slightly tepid debut and then picked up an ankle knock on top of that, so she may not start or be available against France.

Upside: The U.S. looks like they don’t need too much more to settle into the tournament groove, as opposed to their slooowwww start in 2015.

More upside: it looks like Allie Long and Morgan Brian are both already settled into the midfield, despite it being their first big tournament and return from hamstring injury respectively.

In fact there’s more upsides than downsides coming out of that New Zealand game, which is good, since France will also be confident after handling Colombia 4-0 in their group stage opener. It was a good win from France, who scored in several different ways, including an own goal and a lovely Camille Abily free kick from the top of the 18.

The U.S. was confident in their ball movement in the back, but will need to tighten it up as they move forward in order to break down the French defense. They’ll also be running up against Amandine Henry in the midfield, which may push them wide - which is fine, if Heath and Crystal Dunn can keep the flanks locked down.

Heath almost certainly will, while Dunn is a little bit more of a question mark. Perhaps Pugh will see time against France; we’ll see what Jill Ellis has to say about her ankle.

Dunn is definitely capable of going a full 90, but if needed, other subbing options include Christen Press, though she’s not at her best when forced out wide instead of allowed to play centrally. (That sound you hear in the distance is the clamoring of Heather O’Reilly fans.)

It’s also uncertain how high Carli Lloyd can afford to push against France; even if they leave two midfielders to shield the back line, with the wingers pushing high and Lloyd acting as a second striker with Alex Morgan, that can leave a big gap in the midfield for France to exploit, and exploit gaps they most certainly will.

Eugenie Le Sommer is an attacker to watch for France. She’s just as good at give-n-go and seeing players making runs as she is at taking the shot herself, and will need to be marked carefully in the box. Better yet if they can cut her off from the midfield, which will partially require the U.S. to control Abily, so often the string-puller for France when she’s not nailing dangerous long range shots.

So: recalibrate the offense (Heath looks like she’s inches from bagging her first goal in this tournament), and lock up the French midfield, which may mean reining Carli Lloyd in a little bit.

USA vs France kicks off on Saturday, August 6 at 4 PM ET and will air on NBCSN and NBC Universo. It’ll also be streaming on NBC’s site.

Mallory's Excellent Adventure

18 Year Old Mallory Pugh participated in her very first senior US Women's Soccer Team camp just a bit over 6 months ago in January 2016, and then made a remarkable run to earn a spot on the 2016 Olympic Team, becoming the second-youngest women's soccer Olympian in U.S. history.

Mallory Pugh made her Olympic qualifying debut in July 2016 against Costa Rica in the team's first match of the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

At 79 days shy of her 18th birthday, Pugh became the youngest player in US Women's National Team history to play in an Olympic qualifying game.

There are six women's soccer matches Today, on Day 1 of the Rio Olympics.

In the premier matchup of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament group stage the U.S. takes on France in Group G play Today,
Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

USA Favored, like, +138 to +226 or somesuchthing on France,
Over/Under is set at 2.5, the Under Favored at -151
compared to Over at +135

Both teams won their opening matches at the Olympics with the U.S. defeating New Zealand 2-0 and France dismantling Colombia 4-0 to set up a showdown for the top spot in Group G.
The U.S., the top ranked team in the world, and France, ranked third, are considered two of the gold medal favorites at the Olympics.

The two sides last faced each other in March 2016 in the SheBelieves Cup. The U.S. came away with a 1-0 victory as Alex Morgan scored a goal in stoppage time.

The U.S. and France also have recent Olympic history together as both were in Group G of the 2012 London Olympic tournament.

That year, the teams faced off in the first group stage match in what proved to be a pivotal game for the U.S. France took the early lead through goals by Gaetane Thiney and Marie-Laure Delie within the first 15 minutes.

Then in the 17th minute, Carli Lloyd

came on for the U.S. as a substitute for an injured Shannon Boxx.

That change was the turning point for the U.S. in the match and for the rest of the tournament. The team came back to beat France 4-2 in the match and went on to win Olympic gold. Carli Lloyd played in every Olympic match following the France game and scored both the team’s goals in the Gold Medal Match.

Four years later, Carli Lloyd is the captain and face of the U.S. women’s soccer team as it looks to win its fourth straight gold medal.

The Heir To The Throne and, barring Injury, the girl who will become a central character on the stage of USA Women's Soccer for the next 20 years, 18 Year Old Wonderkid Mallory Pugh joins the squad as a Newcomer at Forward with massive promise and desire. She will be the 2nd Youngest to ever play Olympic Soccer for Team USA Women and is Ready to Attack.

Expect the intensity of a knockout stage match as both the U.S. and France are very very good teams that are quite familiar with one another.

French midfielder Amandine Henry plays club soccer in the U.S. with the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League alongside U.S. national team players Tobin Heath, Meghan Klingenberg, Lindsey Horan and Allie Long.

Additionally, Lindsey Horan and Tobin Heath have played in the French professional league with Paris Saint-Germain where they were teammates with many French international players.

Germany vs. Australia 5:00 p.m. ET

Germany looks to continue its strong play after defeating Zimbabwe 6-1 in its opening match while Australia looks to get on track after a 2-0 loss to Canada. Germany is ranked second in the world while Australia is ranked fifth.

Brazil vs. Sweden 9:00 p.m. ET

Both Brazil and Sweden won their opening matches. Sweden struggled against South Africa, but was able to come away with three points while Brazil handled China in its 3-0 victory. This match could decide the winner of Group E.

"Gatorade Player of The Year", yeah, but that doesn't mean SHIT when you step onto The Pitch for Tryouts against many other talented young Soccer players to try to be selected to be a member of a tiny US Women's Olympic Soccer squad that is like a Family, considered the best female soccer team in the world and with the weight of a Nation of 300 Million on your shoulder's plus the dreams, aspirations of a BUNCH of young girl soccer players, the desire to be a Role Model for them.....a burden you carry as well.

When you've wanted one thing, all of your Life, Dreamed of that to where its kept you up at night, to where you've gotten injured and cried at the possibility that your One Dream might not come true...

....but then you get a chance to make it happen.

Mallory Pugh stepped onto the pitch to tryout for The USWNT and Rose to the occasion.

In a Stunning Run that revealed her to be a talent intensely Special, She Rose.....

.....and like a Camel going thru they eye of a needle at 18 years old Mallory Pugh is the 2nd Youngest female Soccer Player to be a member of The US Women's Olympic Squad. Ever.

If she can avoid Injury that derails what will be a Brilliant career Mallory Pugh will go on to be a Leader of USWNT, a huge part of that for the next 20 years and a name you will hear prominently in regards to The US Women's National Team until about 2034 or so....and then after that, for the Legend that she leaves behind.

Unknown, of course, how much playing time Jill Evans will give Mallory cuz Jill defaults to resistance to risk, where making that huge leap of faith to START Young Talent, preferring a "safer" route of using more experienced players but even if Mallory does not see much playing time in these games....

The Future is Here.
