So I didn't want to give dipshit more attention with his conversations with Edwin so I'll start a new one here. But Alexnguyen posted something to the effect that he didn't want some young poster thinking this was accurate and betting real money based on his propaganda. I was getting ready to post "anybody that stupid deserves to lose" and I froze up thinking of my early days....one vivid memory...
So I'm in college, its 2001 (it's the same apartment from 9-11 attack so I recall the year if nothing else) outside of dad's parlay cards, it my 1st real venture into gambling and you can imagine how its going. Somewhere along the line, I stumble upon my 1st gambling forum/chat room (SBG maybe, really don't recall.) Like any forum its a mix of brash talkers and seemingly nicer individuals.
It's NFL season. A brash semi-regular (a Russ-type, perhaps) comes in spouting the fix is in!!! Take the Over in the Dolphins game. Something like the leagues is in on it, the refs are in on it, there's no way the game is not going over!
So I'm in! Big (relatively speaking)! I don't remember the exact specifics except Al Michaels' voice (but we'll get to that). So it must have been a Monday Night affair. With a little bit of help from pro football reference, the game was 12/10/01. Dolphins vs. Colts.
I remember the game being a blowout but the Dolphins are almost going to cover on their own. But we get into the 4Q and the game is stalling. Dolphins are just grinding things. Then....Al Michaels' says something to the effect of "well, the game may be all but over but there's still one number to care about."
Well...nowadays everyone knows Al Michaels is a long time gambler and nowadays it's nothing to see a spread on the bottom line. But I had never, NEVER!, heard Al reference any sort of gambling previously, nor any broadcaster (I'm a little too young to really remember Jimmy The Greek on the pregame.)
HOLY SHIT! So now I'm really believing this ass on the forum is for real! But the clocks still ticking and we're a score from the over.
The way I remember it, the Dolphins should be taking knees and they're just hammering the ball into the line. And as the clock is ticking down to zero, Dolphins break one to score from the 40 and the game is over and OVER!!! (And checking the boxscore it was only from the 20 and there was 17 seconds left, but I'm close.)
So holy shit. My reality is now that the NFL is fixed and this poster is God. Obviously, I rode his dick for awhile, and, though I don't remember how it all played out, I know there wasn't too many happy endings in those early days so I imagine it didn't end well.
So moral of the story young players: don't be dumb, use some common sense and know that there's no magic genie in a bottle. It's a grind, guys. Be smart.
