Georgia's late cover among worst 'bad beats' of the weekend

Rob Nelson
ESPN Staff Writer

Rob Nelson of ESPN Stats & Information revisits the worst bad beats from the weekend's gambling action.

Friday

Northwestern State Demons at Baylor Bears

Closing line: Baylor -50.5

Baylor was the only ranked team favored by 50 points or more this weekend, and 71 percent of the bets were on the Bears to cover.

Baylor scored on each of its first nine possessions and led 55-0 early in the third quarter. At that point, Northwestern State not only couldn't stop the Bears, but had been unable to muster any sort of offense. With 11 minutes and 13 seconds left in the third quarter, the Demons had twice as many offensive drives that ended with negative yardage (4) than they had first downs (2).

But Northwestern State was able to find the end zone late in third quarter when Brooks Haack punched it in from 3 yards out. Combine that score with Baylor being held scoreless in the final 26 minutes, and the underdog ended up covering. The Bears finished the second half with their fewest yards (105) and first downs (5) after halftime in a game since 2010.

Final score: Baylor 55, Northwestern State 7 (Northwestern State covers)

Saturday

Georgia Bulldogs vs North Carolina Tar Heels

Closing line: Georgia -3.5

SEC favorites went 3-7 against the spread this weekend, but it could have been worse if it weren't for Georgia's late rally.

The Bulldogs -- favored by more than a field goal -- trailed by 10 with just over 16 minutes to play. They closed the third quarter with an Isaiah McKenzie 17-yard touchdown catch and added a safety two plays later. Georgia took a two-point lead on William Ham's 29-yard field goal with 5:27 left in the fourth, but the 41 percent of bettors who took North Carolina were still covering. Less than two minutes later, Nick Chubb broke the game open with a 55-yard touchdown run that put the Bulldogs up by nine and, unfortunately for Tar Heel backers, that margin would hold. Georgia ended up scoring the final 19 points of the game.

Final score: Georgia 33, North Carolina 24 (Georgia covers)

Fresno State Bulldogs at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Closing line: Nebraska -29.5

In a day full of upsets, Fresno State tried to pull a shocker of its own. Two Power 5 teams lost as four-touchdown favorites on Saturday (Mississippi State and Washington State), but Nebraska -- favored by 29.5 -- would have been the largest favorite to go down.

The Cornhuskers allowed the Bulldogs to score the final 10 points of the first half, and took a slim 14-10 lead into halftime. The 43 percent who took Fresno State to cover the big spread had to be feeling pretty good, but what followed was a 30 minutes to forget for those folks. Nebraska outscored the Bulldogs 29-0 in the second half, including a 22-0 edge in the fourth quarter.

The 29-point advantage for the Cornhuskers after halftime marked their best second-half scoring differential in a game since September 2007.

Final score: Nebraska 43, Fresno State 10 (Nebraska covers)

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at Arizona State Sun Devils

Closing line: Arizona State -27

This marked the last game to kick off Saturday night -- aka, the last chance for bettors to improve/salvage their day. It turned out to be an exciting finish in regard to the spread, unless you were one of the mere 16 percent who took Northern Arizona +27.

Halfway through the third quarter, Arizona State led 10-6 before scoring the next 16 points to go up 20. But when Northern Arizona's Elijah Marks scored on an 87-yard touchdown catch to make it 26-13 with 10:39 left, the Lumberjacks looked prime to cover. The Sun Devils however, would score the final 18 points of the game, including a spread-covering 12-yard touchdown run by Nick Ralston with 2:46 left.

Arizona State's 24 fourth-quarter points were tied for its most in a game in 15 seasons.

Final score: Arizona State 44, Northern Arizona 13 (Arizona State covers)

How about NW vs. WMU? NW QB goes in for the cover with about 2:30 in the game and fumbles out of the side of the endzone for a touch back.

Not to mention one of the biggest bonehead plays in the history of football by the Western Michigan player. There was however an offensive hold on the play. So even if that call was overturned they would have been back around the 12 yard line and only needed a FG to win.

Oh I didn't know about the Offensive Holding call. I thought they just called it "Fumble Out of The Endzone" and WMU Ball.

Bonehead's FOOT was damn near DOWN OUT OF BOUNDS as he manages to volley the ball back onto the field into play, within the ENDZONE to gift NW with not just the Win but the ATS Cover.

You absolutely sure about that Offensive Holding call? Could have been, I was too stunned, shellshocked by Dude's Volley to comprehend much. At that time.

NW gets that TD as result of that Volley and that is quite literally one of the stupidest plays (mistakes) within all of Sports History.

Ever.

No Exaggeration.

How about the under 45 in Penn state vs Kent state? Sure at half you thought it was dead with a score of 16-13 but with 4:00 to go and penn state leading 26-13 with the ball on their own 33 yard line you would be feeling great.. Figure penn state runs the ball and HC Franklin just wants to get to the locker room, no..... Penn state puts their foot on the gas and ends up hitting a TD on a play action with a 1:53 left to push the game over the total
also the game had two defensive tds, never should have sniffed 46 pts.<iframe id="google_osd_static_frame_9147998865228" name="google_osd_static_frame" style="display: none; width: 0px; height: 0px;"></iframe>

Spread was basically WMU +5 all week, went down to +4.5 well before the game, saw +4 on gameday and possibly even as low as +3.5 in some places....

So its real Safe to say a large large number of people were losing their effing minds during this play.......

.....a bit of "Setup" Highlights to the moments that felt like an Eternity, waiting for the Refs to RULE.....precede the nightmare....in this video...

This went into a region of being maybe the worst Bad Beat ever though its hard to imagine something topping Mich St vs. Michigan last season or The Iron Bowl when Chris Whatshisname returns that missed Field Goal....

Actually among the Worst BAD BEATs that ever happened took place right here, on RX, in last season's College Football Contest.

IRON BOWL AGAIN.

Winner and 2nd Place in RX College Football Contest got decided by the end of The Iron Bowl.....a really really strange ending....considering that Auburn had ZERO Timeouts + BAMA DEFENSE + what Field position was Plus...

and mainly the fact that the last thing a team wants is to get their Stud RB hurt running the ball during garbage time with them having already secured the victory....

...this shit was literally unbelievable.

4th Down even....on the play.....SUPERLATE in the game Bama Up but NOT COVERING (line was BAMA -10, BAMA was up 22-13) but with Victory secured and BAMA on Auburn's 13 Yard Line or whatever....

.....Derrick Henry.....

For the RX College Football Contest to get decided by what you'll see in the video below (from 2:33:41 time mark forward...cuz this is the whole game) is completely incomprehensible.

This is why I encourage everyone to Join The RX Football Contests, too late now for NCAAF one but still time for NFL.

Anything can happen.

As it did......at 2:33:41 time mark forward................................

ML DOG......Thanks for reminding me! Only good thing I can say about that beat was that I did not lose actual cash in hand, just prize amount. Even though I was pretty stung going from first to third.&#55357;&#56850;&#55357;&#56850;&#55357;&#56850;

Oh Crap.

I prayed you wouldn't see this thread.

So much for "The Power of Prayer."

Though that did work, somehow....with Derrick Henry running that ball in.

ALL HE HAS TO DO IS HIT THE TURF WITH THE 1ST DOWN.

THEY NEEDED ONE YARD.

HE'D RUN THE BALL 45 TIMES FOR 246 YARDS FERCHRISSKES.

In Essence I don't ever get to complain about a "bad beat" again, that Divine Providence having fallen my way.

In REALITY THOUGH....Bonehead from WMU succeeds in saving that football out of the end zone & transforms WMU Ball on Touchback ball for NW to get that TD and COVER due to his insane Boneheadness...

.....and I'd been up in here complaining like a MOFO.

You know how it goes, Shale.

REVENGE IS SWEET SHALE.

TAKE THAT RX NCAAF THIS SEASON.

Right we would have seen that play thousands of times had it cost them the game, but now will never see it again. Yep holding call actually would have brought them back to the 16 I believe.

Still remains a terrible Bad Beat for NW ATS bettors. I still don't think WMU Guy scored on the previous drive where they went up by one. Maybe he did but it totally looked to me like he did not ever break the plain, before his knee went down at least.

And I needed WMU - that 4.5 so I was completely trying to see him break that goal line.

Clemson -8.5 should be up there. They were up 6 with about 40 seconds left when Dabo decided to go for it on 4th down at the 17 yard line instead of kicking a field goal that would've made it a two score game.

Well the only issue here is Clemson never should have covered this game, so hard to call it a bad beat. You are right in that most coaches probably kick a FG there so in that regard guess it could fit the criteria. But the game would have been over if the Clemson kid just stayed in bounds on the 3rd down play. How in the world players continue to do this blows my mind. I blame coaching for it but that's another story.
