he was mentally ill

from what I understand his sister called the cops on him and informed him that he was mentally ill and unarmed

police need more training to deal with mentally ill people

sad that someone lost their life, sad that someone had to take a life (being a cop is a tough job these days), sad that so many don't understand mental illness...

I hear what you are saying DN, but here is the problem I have with that....someone tells me "he is mentally ill" and then "he" points something at me and acts like he is going to shoot a gun, there is no way I am waiting to find out if it is a gun or something else....really do not get why people cannot understand this. Also, if he is so mentally ill that he is a danger, why is he out driving around?

I don't disagree.....being a cop is a tough job....but I think many cops would agree that if they were better equipped to recognize those with mental illnesses and the methods that work best to deescalate situations with them that we would have less of these events. Who knows, maybe they could have tasered him earlier when he didnt comply....I am not saying the cop should be charged or anything like that based on what I know....just a shitty situation from what I can tell....especially with the sister allegedly having called on her own brother and saying he was unarmed and mentally ill....

This.

I've said that from the beginning. Cops need more training on how to deescalate situations.

Sorry man. But NOT THIS^^^

Yes the deescalation issue is 1000% needed... however.. from today till the end of time, regardless what his sister says,, if any dude pulls the same moves that guy does. He deserves to be shot..

IT'S called THINNING THE HERD. And it's necessary for a healthy civilization.. some people weren't meant for certain things.. 1 of those things is LITERALLY life..

Cops lives matter 100 × more than criminals, lives... and or sadly this guy's life..

Sorry to say.. but I'm right.

AND YES... their are times when deescalation ABSOLUTELY needs to be used.. not here

the sister SAYING he was unarmed is MEANINGLESS and so is her telling them he is mentally ill, really. But you still do not address why, if this guy, is mentally unfit why is he out and about?

All these people, every single one of them, is just committing suicide by cop and want to be famous in their death and continue to stir up the race wars.

People are just flat out stupid! This shouldn't be a story like 97% of shootings, media and black driven. When people learn to not play games then this will 99% end!

Tough spot for the cops.

I do think there have been some incidents, where the police have been too eager to "resolve" the situation.

But how many times have we seen the angry/unstable/drugged/crazy person -- and the family can't (or won't) deal with them, and the police have to play Babysitter.

When did that happen? When did the police become responsible for cleaning-up every domestic + family argument?

If cops could determine whether someone has a mental illness in 1.2 seconds, they wouldn't be cops
