Bears quarterback Brian Hoyer suffered a broken arm in the second quarter of Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers. He was immediately taken for x-rays and was officially ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Hoyer was injured when the Packers’ pass rush got to him and he was hit by both Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers. His arm bent at an awkward angle, and he remained on the ground and appeared to be in great pain. He was shown on the Thursday Night Football broadcast being transported on a cart.

Backup quarterback Matt Barkley immediately began warming up to prepare to enter the game. Barkley hadn’t played since 2014, when he threw one pass with the Eagles, which went incomplete. Over his career, Barkley had completed 30 of 50 attempts for 300 yards, four interceptions, and no touchdowns. Barkley was activated from the practice squad after Jay Cutler sprained his thumb in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With no other quarterback on the roster tonight, tight end Zach Miller would serve as the Bears’ emergency quarterback should anything happen to Barkley. Miller played both quarterback and tight end in college at Nebraska-Oklahoma.

Hoyer has been filling in for Cutler, and has completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 1,396 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.
