Florida Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had cocaine and alcohol in his system when he and two friends were killed in a September boating accident, according to an autopsy report obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Saturday.

Fernandez’s blood alcohol content was .147, nearly twice the legal limit, according to the toxicology results included in the report by the Miami-Dade County.

The medical examiner extracted blood from a vein (147) and fluid taken from Fernandez's eye (016) to determine Fernandez’s blood alcohol level. A person operating a boat in Florida is considered to be under the influence at .08 or higher.

Fernandez, 24, and his two friends, Jesus Macias, 27, and Eduardo Rivero, 25, were killed in the morning hours of Sept. 25 after the boat they were in hit a jetty off South Beach at high speeds. An investigation was launched to determine the events surrounding the accident, including which one of the three was piloting the boat.

Cocaine was also found in the system of Rivero, who had a blood alcohol content of .065. Macias' BAC was .044. All three were found to have sustained blunt-force injuries to the head.

Cocaine would have made the drive/sailor over confident and go even faster. Cocaine gives you a rush. But lasts only a little while.

The alcohol level was probably lot higher when they took the boat and left. heard that the accident was around 3am. They left the bar and got on the boat just around midnight.

Young kid. sad news. Having the right friends goes a long way. Friends were kids too but still, someone could have been responsible.

You know cocaine is a drug right? Do you think being on any drug helps with your driving? ....what a stupid question

Hey asshole, just because it's a drug doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna impair your driving. I'm pretty sure many truck drivers are out there driving and doing much worse to stay awake.

How can any mind/body altering drug not impair your driving? :ohno:

Adderall (or any equivalent) is body / mind altering and that is the long haul drivers drug of choice. Keeps one quite alert and sharp.

but, dosage is key. Gotta be within therapeutic levels. Too high a dosage and Adderall can decrease cognitive function, cause delusions.........dagone......

Debris littered a highway. A car sat split in two. A young man was dead. At first, the horrific crash that killed 20-year-old Harley Johnson seemed inexplicable. That night, he drove eastbound in the westbound lane for six miles on Highway 283 in Pennsylvania before crashing head-on into a tractor-trailer hauling cattle. Police suspected the young man was taking some sort of narcotic. Blood tests showed the presence of the prescription drug Adderall in Johnson's system. Now Johnson's mother, Sandi Zook, is speaking out to warn others of the drug that claimed her son's life.

Adderall is an amphetamine commonly prescribed for people with ADHD, and abused by some looking to stave off fatigue. Zook told WGAL 8 she thinks her son was taking the drug to cope with his busy schedule of work, college classes, and band practice.

"He had such a busy, active lifestyle that I really think that he was just trying to stay awake and try and keep up with everything that was going on."

When taken recreationally, Adderall can cause blood-pressure spikes, confusion and dizziness. Johnson's stepfather, Chip Zook, told WGAL 8 that though Johnson had recently lost a lot of weight, the family had no idea he might have a drug problem. Sandi Zook is on a mission to prevent more deaths from this drug.

"You got to know the consequences of taking this drug, because it's very dangerous," Zook told WGAL 8.

Yeah, can get a ton of good focused Driving done on that totally the opposite of impaired driving, if ya just Mandate Control, stay chill and especially don't keep driving into Coming Down offa that stuff. One time I drove a Cab 24 hours straight, the last 10 of those hours under the influence of LSD.

My last fare was a Black guy and his lady going to The Elks Lodge, I thought I was fine, I was just Tripping on the lights on the walls of the tunnel we were going through but when I looked back at the black couple all I could see was there four eyes, totally bugging out in absolute fear.

The car was dark inside, they were black and dressed in dark clothes so all that was visible was their eyes. Terror Filled.

These were Hard Ass Gangsta-ish Blacks too. Not folks you'd expect would get skeered but they was seriously, like, their eyes looked in fear for their safety. With me driving and tripping out.

Got 'em to the Elks Lodge (turned into Party Hall) then I went home.

A man has to know his limits, and respect those.

Until you've been on it for years and it doesn't work anymore.

Yeah, I totally didn't mean to. The only reason I wound up in that spot was my shift was nearing an end when I got given the Acid by a passenger, dropped it knowing I was going home but when the acid kicked in I was like: "Damn, this feles pretty good" and I just kept on driving.

18 Hours just by itself of cab driving amidst bustling traffic = Mental Fatigue that spells total danger, ya begin to lose your mind. LSD on top of that for another 6 hours of driving, after I dropped the black folks off Fatigue crashed down onto me, it took me hours to get home cuz i had to stop and try to sleep I was too unstable to drive, came on suddenly and hard. I tried to nap but I was too fatigued to sleep.

I'd never ever do that again, no way.

24 years old or so though, like Jose Fernandez you know, one feels Indestructible.

The cocaine played zero roll - in fact when drinking it makes u straighten out - the alcohol and the environment caused the accident - there are no lights at the entrance to the bay and it is near impossible of see the rocks - alcohol impaired the judgemental and you need to slow down 100 yards offshore - every time I come in when it's dark I think it's dangerous and not even drinking

we didn't need to know this, the family didn't need to be embarrassed as they continue to suffer from such a tragic loss

not necessarily true. When on cocaine one may drink MORE than one would normally. And from the below:

'no one can accurately predict the high or heightened state of drunkenness that a person will have when they mix these two'

Whats embarrassing about it? Young Rich Guy got Drunk and High and went for a Boat Ride. Died. Tragedy is not lessened or made greater just cuz he ingested some substances.

Jim Morrison got Fat, grew a beard, OD'd on Heroin wound up in a bathtub dead. Totally not embarrassing at all and if that wasn't certainly getting high then barreling into some impossible to see Rocks on a dark dark night isn't embarrassing.

Maybe this will give other athletes "pause" to consider?
