Baylor just created history on Thursday as they set the NCAA record for margin of victory by beating Winthrop by 108 points! This is even with Kim Mulkey resting her top scorer & no one playing over 21 minutes. They held Winthrop to 13.6% shooting including shutting them out 29-0 in the 4th Q. The saddest part is Kim was not even trying to run up the score & it was nothing she could do.

--------

One team is a perennial women’s basketball power whose only loss this season came against four-time defending national champion UConn. The other team is a small-conference minnow whose only win this season came against Division III North Carolina Wesleyan.

Everything about Baylor’s matchup with Winthrop screamed mismatch, yet nobody could have seen this margin of victory coming.
Third-ranked Baylor clobbered overmatched Winthrop 140-32 on Thursday afternoon, setting a NCAA record for margin of victory in a Division I women’s basketball game. The 108-point margin eclipsed Grambling’s 139-37 win over Jarvis Christian back in 1986.

Even though Baylor coach Kim Mulkey rested her leading scorer the entire game and did not play anyone else more than 21 minutes, the Lady Bears’ lead still kept ballooning larger and larger. They held the Eagles to just 13.6 percent shooting, opening up a 32-point lead after one quarter, increasing it to 59 points by halftime and boosting it to 79 points after three quarters.

Remarkably, it was the fourth quarter that was the most lopsided. Baylor outscored Winthrop 29-0 despite Mulkey experimenting with lineups she hadn’t previously used all season.

“In this business, what goes around, comes around,” Mulkey told reporters in Waco after the game. “I tried to play tons of people in and out of the lineup. I called timeouts trying to get people off the floor. I am most grateful that [Winthrop coach Kevin Cook] recognized that. Kevin said, ‘Thank you.’

“You coach long enough, you’re going to have games like this and you’re not always going to be on the winning end. It was get kids off the floor, get them some minutes, do some things differently. We did all that. I tried everything I knew how to try because I respect him but more importantly I respect the game.”
Baylor’s record-setting margin of victory serves as a reminder that the Lady Bears are a title threat this season. They’re now 10-1 with Top 25 victories over UCLA, DePaul and Ohio State in addition to another quality win over unranked perennial power Tennessee.

Considering that Winthrop is in rebuilding mode after a 4-26 season a year ago, perhaps the Eagles should have been more cautious about agreeing to play at Baylor.
They arrived as massive underdogs and left on the wrong side of history.
