NHL roundup: Luongo, Panthers blank Devils

NEWARK, N.J. -- Roberto Luongo turned aside 28 shots for his 73rd career shutout as the Florida Panthers beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Monday night at Prudential Center.
Luongo missed the Panthers' previous two games with an upper-body injury. The 37-year-old veteran hadn't recorded a shutout since Jan. 22, 2016, a span of 50 starts.
Reilly Smith scored a power-play goal in the first period, and Jussi Jokinen and Vincent Trocheck added empty-net goals in the final minute to give the Panthers their third win in nine games.
Devils goaltender Cory Schneider, who was teammates with Luongo in Vancouver for five seasons, stopped 26 shots in the goaltending duel.

MONTREAL -- Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists to lead Washington to a win over Montreal.
Ovechkin's goal, a point shot on the power play late in the third period, was the 544th of his career, tying him with Canadiens Hall of Famer Maurice Richard for 29th on the NHL's career list. With his three-point night, the Capitals captain moved to 999 for his career.
Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Brett Connolly also scored for Washington, which won its sixth straight.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Winnipeg channeled its inner Dale Hawerchuks and Teemu Selannes to post an impressive victory over Calgary.
Sporting their Heritage Classic jerseys, which pay tribute to the city's hockey history in the 1970s, '80s and '90s, the Jets got goals from two of their leaders, defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and right winger Blake Wheeler. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots to record his third shutout of the season and fifth of his career.
Chad Johnson made 25 saves for Calgary.

LOS ANGELES -- Patrick Sharp recorded a goal and two assists and Radek Faksa registered three assists as Dallas defeated Los Angeles.
Dallas received a goal and an assist from Tyler Seguin and Jiri Hudler to win the rubber game of the three-game season series. Antti Niemi saved only one Kings shot in 14:42 to win in relief of starting goaltender Kari Lehtonen.
Los Angeles lost for the second time in the last three home games. Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty each tallied a goal and an assist. Peter Budaj stopped 17 of 22 shots and was replaced by Jeff Zatkoff at 7:31 of the final period.

Hab-itutal OT Offender
The Montreal Canadiens have won four of their past five games, but they're making bettors work for their money lately. Over the past six games for the Habs, five of the outings have been decided in overtime. The Canadiens have won three of their past four games decided in the 3-on-3 overtime session, with all three of those wins coming on the road. Over the past 24 games, Montreal has played nine overtime games and a shootout during the span. They're 4-5 in OT games this season, splitting each of their two games decided in a shootout.

Defense is King
The Los Angeles Kings defense and goaltending has been on point since mid-December, allowing three or fewer goals in 10 of the past 12 outings. They're allowing just 1.92 goals per game, and that includes the seven they've given up over the past two outings. In the past nine games with Peter Budaj in between the pipes, the Slovakian netminder is 5-3-1 with a 1.43 Goals-Against Average (GAA). He has been particularly effective on the road, giving up two or fewer goals each of his past seven outings.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Jan. 10
The Flyers meet the Sabres in Buffalo for the second games between these Eastern Conference rivals this season. The Flyers edged the Sabres 4-3 in a shootout in the first meeting on Oct. 25. Philly has won three of their past four trips to Buffalo. The 'over' is 6-3 in the past nine meetings in this series, although the 'under' is 2-0 in the past two in Buffalo. The Fly Guys headed into Columbus Monday night with five straight losses on the road, while has split their past six games overally while averaging 3.0 goals per game over the span.

The Sharks head to Northern Alberta to battle the Oilers. While San Jose has won just four of the past seven meetings in this series lately, including a 3-2 overtime victory in the first meeting on Dec. 23, the Sharks have enjoyed plenty of success between these two teams overall. San Jose is 7-3 in their past 10 trips to Edmonton, and the 'under' has cashed in five of the past seven meetings in this meetings in the Oilers' arena. Four of the past seven in this series has been decided in overtime or a shootout, with the teams splitting two OT games and two in the SO. In fact, seven of the past 11 meetings have resulted in one-goal games.

Wednesday, Jan. 11
The slate is short and sweet Wednesday night, but there is a huge rivalry game. The Penguins and Capitals do battle in the nation's capital, and Pittsburgh will have revenge on its mind. The Caps embarrassed Sidney Crosby and the boys back on Nov. 16, winning 7-1. In the first meeting back on Oct. 13, it was the Pens eeking out a 3-2 shootout victory in the Steel City. The 'over' is 3-0-1 in the past four regular season meetings in this series, and three of the past five have been one-goal games. The past four meetings in this series have resulted in an average of 7.0 total goals per game.

The Canadiens and Jets meet in MTS Centre, as Montreal looks to stay hot. The Habs have won four of their past seven visits to Winnipeg, with the 'over' cashing in three of the past four trips. The Habs are victorious in 11 of the past 15 overall in this series. While the Jets have amassed 10 goals over the past three meetings, they have averaged just 1.9 goals per game over the past 15 meetings in this series. During the same 15-game span, the Habs are averaging 3.3 goals per game against the Jets.

Thursday, Jan. 12
The Red Wings and the Stars hook up in the Metroplex, and Dallas will be looking for a little payback after dropping a 3-1 decision Nov. 29 in their final visit to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. These two former Western Conference rivals do not meet as frequently since the Red Wings moved to the East, but Detroit probably wishes they could petition the league to play in Dallas more. The Red Wings have won seven straight trips to Dallas dating back to Oct. 14, 2010. In fact, the Stars have won just three of the past 14 meetings overall in this series.The 'under' is 8-4 in the past 12 meetings. Three of the past seven in this series have required overtime to find a winner, but just six of the past 14 have been one-goal games.
The Blues and Kings do battle in Southern California, and these games have been tight recently. The past three meetings have been one-goal games, and the 'under' has cashed in each of the past four in this series. Three of the past 13 meetings have resulted in 1-0 scores, with two of those games decided in a shootout. The Kings have defended home ice well in the past six regular season meetings, topping the Blues five times. The 'under' is 7-1 in the past eight meetings at Staples Center, too.

Preview: Flyers (21-15) at Sabres (15-15)

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres picked up their best win of the season on Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets and are hoping to use it as a stepping stone for the rest of the year.

On Saturday, the Sabres overcame a 3-1 deficit with three third-period goals in a span of 4:42 to come away with a 4-3 victory. They'll look to take that momentum into Tuesday's home game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

"It has the feel of a turnaround game," Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma said after the win. "We needed that in the game and we got it but it's also a big comeback for the boys. It's a big way to respond in the third period and we left it all out there. We played hard in the third period and came all the way back to get the win. It feels like a big game for us."

In that game, defenseman Jake McCabe ignited Buffalo's comeback with a devastating -- and clean -- hit on Jets rookie star Patrik Laine late in the second period. Marcus Foligno, Zemgus Girgensons and captain Brian Gionta scored in the third to put away the Jets.

It was a pleasant change of pace for the Sabres, who have seen several late leads slip away this season and have been dreadful in games that go to overtime.

"It's nice to finish this one out and be on the opposing side of something like that instead of giving up the lead," Buffalo center Jack Eichel said.

Newcomer Kyle Okposo leads the Sabres in scoring with 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists). Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen has been having an excellent season on the blue line and is second in points with 26. Sam Reinhart is quietly third on the team with 24.

"Just how I'm feeling consistency-wise, the consistency has stepped up and in an 82-game schedule that's the most important thing you can have," Reinhart said, according to the team's website.

The Flyers are still looking to regain their form a month ago. The Flyers had a 10-game unbeaten streak from Nov. 27 to Dec. 14 but have fallen on hard times since then. Since the streak ended, the Flyers have lost eight of their last 10 games.

"The games are so tight that the smallest things can determine between winning or losing," Flyers goaltender Steve Mason said last week, according to the team's website. "Even in the games when we were winning 10 in a row, some of those games could have gone either way. It's a tight league and no games are easy. We're going through a tough stretch, (and) it's just a matter of sticking with it here, not getting discouraged and keep pushing forward."

Philadelphia is coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Columbus on Sunday.

Jakub Voracek leads the Flyers in points with 39 (13 goals, 26 assists). Captain Claude Giroux is second on the team in points with 34 (10 goals, 24 assists).

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Two teams that have had long streaks are looking to build even better numbers when the Columbus Blue Jackets visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night.

The streaks were halted recently for each team, but they've responded and seem anxious to create more good moments.

The teams won overtime games Sunday, setting up this Metropolitan Division matchup.

The Blue Jackets had won 16 straight games until two losses, but they recovered to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night.

"We found a way to win a hockey game. That's very important at this stage, especially after losing a couple," Columbus coach John Tortorella said. "(Our players) weren't tentative as far as their thinking."

Carolina's 11-game home points streak ended last week, but the Hurricanes were at home for Sunday's overtime victory over the Boston Bruins.

"We have to take care of our home games," Hurricanes center Jay McClement said.

The Blue Jackets (28-7-4) are 17-2-0 in their last 19 games. They figure they're still in a groove despite a couple of recent setbacks.

"That's the mindset we have right now," defenseman David Savard said. "It has been working for us and we have to keep it going."

Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said the team has proved it can be an elite group. Now it's a matter of rising from that strong foundation.

"Our guys have come a long way," Tortorella said. "No matter what the record is. No matter what happens with winning or losing, I know our guys have improved on being pros."

In all except two games in the 26 all-time meetings between Columbus and Carolina, the winning team has scored at least three goals.

Columbus has largely relied on goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who has a league-leading 26 victories this season.

The Hurricanes have been sticking with goalie Cam Ward, who has started 16 consecutive games.

"You don't want to look too far ahead," Ward said, knowing there's a set of games on back-to-back nights later in the week. "We have a tough challenge against Columbus."

Carolina coach Bill Peters said one sign that he likes recently is that the team's penalty-killing units are doing more than just preventing goals. The Hurricanes have applied pressure in man-down situations.

"We've killed the penalty and we're also dangerous at the same time," Peters said.

Neither team practiced Monday, but there was news from both clubs.

Columbus placed goaltender Curtis McElhinney on waivers, recalling Anton Forsberg from the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League. Forsberg, 24, has appeared in nine NHL games.

The Blue Jackets also assigned left winger Markus Hannikainen to Cleveland.

The Hurricanes placed center Andrej Nestrasil on waivers. That move came in part because forward Elias Lindholm is nearing a return to action from an upper-body injury.

Nestrasil has logged 17 goals and 31 assists in 137 NHL games since 2014. He has appeared in 114 games for Carolina but has only one goal and four assists in 18 games this season. He has played twice in the past month.

The Blue Jackets are 7-3-1 in their last 11 trips to Carolina. This is the first of three meetings in a 12-day period between the teams.
