WR breaks 40-yard dash record at NFL combine

John Ross made history at the NFL scouting combine as the event's fastest man.

The Washington wide receiver ran a 4.22-second 40-yard dash Saturday, breaking Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson's previous record of 4.24 seconds.


"I feel good. I feel like I could have ran faster, just because I cramped up toward the end," Ross said after his run.


One NFL scout on hand in Indianapolis told USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero that he hand-timed Ross at 4.16 seconds.


Ross did not run a second 40-yard dash and pulled out of on-field drills, citing calf cramps.


On Friday, Ross said he was targeting a sub-4.3 run.


A potential first-round pick, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Ross had 81 catches for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns last season.

Speed is one thing but its rout running that will help him keep his job. If not he will be a kick returner.

Ross is a dynamic athlete with great quickness and ball skills. He could get recruited on either side of the ball and contribute on special teams as a return and coverage guy as well. He lacks size -- he has a smaller frame without much bulk and strength -- and that raise durability concerns. However, he guy can scoot, is slippery and extremely difficult to break down on and wrap up in space. We project good production in a spread system where he can be utilized on screens and option routes with his ability to turn the short pass into a big gainer. He is very elusive with sudden change-of-direction and jump-cut skills. He shows the ability get vertical as a downfield threat as well. He is difficult to move off the line and he is quick to gain separation. He adjusts very well to the throw showing good body control, concentration and athleticism pulling in the difficult grab. His hands are good but he can continue to improve his route running and add size to break press coverage, fight the inside jam and absorb the big hit. He could be valuable with his running back versatility and skill set -- he's the type of player offensive coordinators can get creative with from a personnel and alignment standpoint. He has the ability to motion in and out of the backfield and excel on speed sweeps. He displays the quick feet and movements to project at cornerback as well. He shows he can mirror, transition and close quickly. He has good ball skills and is instinctive around it for breakups and interceptions. He takes good angles while the ball is in the air and has impressive range for smaller corner. He has cover corner hips and quickness but will need to refine his man-to-man technique as he can freelance some and rely on his natural athleticism and ballhawking skills to make plays. He is quicker than fast. He also needs to get bigger in order to effectively press and set the edge as a run supporter where his game is weak right now. Overall, Ross is an exciting prospect with valued playmaker skills and versatility and could contribute early in some facet.

Yeah, he signed an endorsement deal with them. I'm sure it wasn't as cool as an island tho.
