Blame it on the officials?

A controversial flagrant foul, as USA TODAY Sports' wrote more about here, decided the Seton Hall-Arkansas game on Friday afternoon - one that Arkansas came back to win, 77-71.

NCAA National Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officiating J.D. Collins explains the flagrant foul call at the end of the Arkansas game.

From NCAA National Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officiating J.D. Collins:

"The referees have to officiate the play for its own merits. And that makes a really difficult situation. The rule is … contact that is not an attempt to play the ball or player, specifically designed to stop or keep the clock from running. And when a player puts two hands in the back and doesn't make any attempt to play the ball or the player in front of him, it's an F1 foul."

Kenny Smith, for his part, said on the broadcast that he believed "that was a flagrant foul."
Charles Barkley said he hated the rule, but under the current rules "it's only a flagrant because that's how the rule is written. If he had grabbed him, it would not have been a flagrant …"

But they were in the minority when it came to how many former players felt about it - on Twitter, many said that even if it was, under the letter of the law a flagrant foul, officials should have deferred to the situation more:

Sam Dekker @dekker
What an awful decision by the refs in the Seton Hall game. Let the players decide the game, not whistles. #CollegeHoops

Mark Titus @clubtrillion This is the real problem. Refs never call it by letter of the law in those instances. Just a dumb situation all around. https://twitter.com/thegreatnw/status/842823264799866880 …

Ryan Ruocco @RyanRuocco Chris Webber was 100% right. Who ever makes a play on the ball when fouling intentionally at end of game. Awful call. https://twitter.com/bobbymarks42/status/842822416703373313 …

total bullshit, and I don't care how they try to spin it, it's never called

just another example of officials being in over their heads and them trying to prove to the world just how smart they are

a hero call, they think they're the game sometimes, they decided it, whoop whoop whoop

Watching the last 2 minutes of these games, it is unreal how dumb some of these players are. Seton Hall's last 2 possessions were at the 5th grade basketball level.

It is just unbelievable that these coaches can't get these guys to focus in a 1 & done situation after they've already played 30+ games in a season.

to be fair, I think the mind set is totally different when it comes to Tournament play.
BUT, in this case there were plenty guys on the floor in this game to know better.

they should make that call in every game not called enough

even if you act like you try to play the ball

intentional fouls is what makes BB unwatchable 20 min to play 2 min on the clock

They helped the Zags hold on against Northwestern with as bad a missed call as you'll ever see. The Zags blocked a shot by putting their hand through the inside of the rim and actually grabbed the rim from the inside. Impossible to miss, unless you really suck at your job. Then they T up Collins for protesting their horrible non call

They put distance between AZ and St Mary's with a very one sided 2nd half, putting the Gaels at a significant disadvantage due to foul trouble. On several calls , there was literally no contact. So while St Mary's was handicapped, AZ was called for 4 fouls. They sealed the deal by calling a totally obvious foul by AZ on St Mary's.

You just can't make this shit up

That at one was so bang bang I disagree.

while it did happen quick its still gotta be clear he did not hit brooks in the chest and brooks was not standing completely still. sick of the automatic charge call especially in that type of moment
