The Detroit Tigers have released right-handed pitcher Francisco Rodriguez ahead of Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres, the team announced.
Rodriguez opened the 2017 season as Detroit’s closer, but has posted a 2-5 record with 7.82 ERA over his 28 appearances this year. In just 25.1 innings of work, he has allowed nine home runs. Rodriguez served as the closer for the Tigers in 2016, finishing the year with 44 saves, second-most in the American League.
Detroit acquired Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers in November 2015, as he was coming off back-to-back All-Star seasons, saving a combined 82 games in 2014 and 2015. At the time of his release, he serves as MLB’s active saves leader with 437 for his career, a number which puts him fourth on the all-time list.
No closer in history has had more saves in a single year than Rodriguez did with the Los Angeles Angels in 2008 when he slammed the door on 62 victories. That year would earn him a third-place spot in the American League Cy Young voting, but stands as the only season in MLB history when a pitcher converted 60 or more saves.
Rodriguez had lost the closer’s job with the team earlier this season, with Justin Wilson and Alex Wilson each having converted saves in 2017 in his absence. K-Rod is on the hook for $6 million this year.
In addition to the release of veteran closer, the team placed outfielder Alex Presley on the seven-day concussion disabled list. Coming up to take their spots on the active roster from Triple-A are right-handed pitcher Bruce Rondon and outfielder Matt den Dekker.
