Fatal stabbings happened this afternoon down the road from me, at Univ Texas

One student has been taken into custody after fatally stabbing one student and injuring three others at UT Austin Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Police later identified the suspect as 21-year-old Kendrex J. White, who appears to be a 2014 graduate of Killeen High School, according to his Facebook page.
The students who survived the attack sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Austin-Travis County EMS tweeted.


Before the chaos, freshman Rachel Prichett stood in line at Chi'Lantro food truck to get lunch. Then, she heard people scream.

"I saw a guy standing there, just walking very calmly, but he was holding a machete type knife," Prichett said. "He grabbed this guy by the shoulder who was facing him and stabbed him in the back and so I turned around and started running away. As I was running, I saw another guy that was sitting at a table slumped over and there was blood on him."

Less than two minutes after receiving a call, an officer responded to Gregory Gym in the 2100 block of Speedway about 1:50 p.m., UT Police Chief David Carter said.

The officer found White walking around the scene with a Bowie-style hunting knife, Carter said. He drew his weapon, ordered White to get on the ground and took him into custody.
Within one block, White walked up to four male students and attacked them, Carter said.
They have not been identified and it's not known if they're connected.
"His motivation, what was going through his mind, I can't answer at this time," Carter said.

Friends close to White said he was an active volunteer in organizations on campus. He was a biology major within the College of Natural Sciences. He was removed from the student directory soon after.
Chris Crawford, a UT senior studying philosophy, said he worked with White at volunteer organization Real Role Models, a place where students would do service and mentorship.
"He was involved all the time and he was at every meeting," Crawford said. "He would never be upset or sad in person. But through time, you never what people go through."
Korbin Springer, a UT junior studying American Studies, said he was supposed to have class with White late Monday afternoon. Springer said White was always smiling and the "nicest guy."
But White recently missed nearly a month of Spanish class, Springer said, and it seemed like something was wrong.
"It was unusual," he said. "He attended pretty regularly."

KVUE reports that he was arrested for driving under the influence in April.

In September 2010, chaos struck the same area of campus when 19-year-old Colton Tooley fired an AK-47 outside and went into Perry-Castañeda Library, where he fatally shot himself. No others were injured.
The UT Tower that looms nearby, was the site of the 1966 shooting when student Charles Whitman opened fire, killing 14 and injuring 31. He slayed his wife and mother the night prior.
At a press conference Monday, UT President Gregory Fenves told students to call home and let their parents know they're safe.
"Earlier this afternoon, a tragedy struck the heart of The University of Texas campus," Fenves said. "...Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families of this incredibly senseless attack."
In regards to questions about the universities response, Carter said no sirens were used because they would have indicated that something else was going, like a lockdown. A text alert was sent out about 20 minutes later.
"As soon as officers arrived they put the individual into custody so there was no ongoing threat," Carter said.
Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement that prayers go out to all those affected by Monday's tragic events, including the stabbing and the shooting of a paramedic in Dallas.
"I have been briefed by the Department of Public Safety on both incidents, and have also talked to University of Texas at Austin President Greg Fenves," Abbott said. "As the investigations into these heinous crimes continue, I have offered all available state resources to both Dallas and the University of Texas to assist in any effort."

There is no immediate threat to campus, but students were told to avoid the area. The gym serves the university and is in the heart of campus. It's next to Jester Dorm, a set of large buildings that house students and classrooms.

Soon after the stabbing, there were rumors of another person with a knife running through West Campus, a nearby residential area, but Austin police said they were not credible and there were no ongoing threats.

Students also tweeted about an incident across campus from the crime scene where a banner was reportedly dropped from a walkway that reads "Tuition pays for bombs." The pedestrian bridge across the bustling Dean Keeton Street connects the Belo Center for New Media with Jesse H. Jones Communication Center.

Some people said buildings had been evacuated, but the Moody College of Communication tweeted that the Belo building is not under lockdown.
