Hence
This horse is just beginning to understand how to run a race.
He broke his maiden three races ago and recovered from trouble he caused himself to win the race in a way that I had never seen before from any other horse. (You can find the video on horseracingnation.com. His last race was the 1 1/8 mi Sunland Derby. After breaking badly and dead last he came around horses to win going away by three lengths. He was really striding out coming down the stretch. Just the motion I like to see from horses who are going into the longer (1 1/4 mi) Derby. He ran the Sunland Derby in a fast 1:48. Only Always Dreaming has run a faster 1 1/8 mi prep (1:47.2).
Throw in the fact that when Hence won the Sun Derby he beat Irap who won the Blue Grass in his next race. And beat Conquest Mo Money in the same race who went on to run a close second to today's likely favorite, Classic Empire, in the Arkansas Derby. That makes Hence's Sunland Derby win what's called a "key race".
And if the track is wet, he broke his maiden in the slop.
Looking for somewhere around 10-1. My kind of horse.
