FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (KABC) --
Hundreds of people's tempers flared in a Fort Lauderdale International Airport terminal for Spirit Airlines Monday night after several flights were canceled.

In footage captured by witnesses, airport security is seen moving in quickly and a number of people are arrested. It all started after nine flights were canceled.

Spirit Airlines is currently negotiating with its pilots' union. It has even filed a lawsuit in federal court over "unlawful job actions by Spirit pilots."

The airlines said some of its pilots have refused to fly, which resulted in the cancellations and set off the angry customers.

Spirit released a statement saying the following:

We are shocked and saddened to see the videos of what took place at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport this evening. This is a result of unlawful labor activity by some Spirit pilots designed to disrupt Spirit operations for our customers, by canceling multiple flights across our network.

These pilots have put their quest for a new contract ahead of getting customers to their destinations and the safety of their fellow Spirit Team Members. It is for this reason, Spirit has filed suit in Federal Court to protect our customers' future travel.

Eyewitness News also reached out to the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents Spirit's pilots, but did not hear back.

If you or someone you know has booked a flight through Spirit, the airline asks to please call ahead to check on the flight status.

If you can afford to fly, why chose Spirit
my mom has owned a place in So Carolina for 4 or 5 years but she was still working in CT. She could jump on a Spirit from LGA to Myrtle round trip for like $60 and spend a weekend at her retirement place vs driving 13 hours each way. It was like $5 for a coke but didn't need luggage because her SoCar house is furnished and has clothes/toiletries

but, yeah, otherwise i wouldn't use them for anything else...good for last-minute trip that doesn't really depend on anything. Anyone using them for a real vacation or business travel is insane. I think they get like $100/bag so you can't really even bring clothes. My nieces put on 6-7 layers of clothes they would wear for the weekend...

have a friend that takes Spirit 99% of the time.
He always tells us how good they are and how cheap.
belongs to their club or whatever its called. So I ask him one day how much was his flight to florida
he's like $9 ...plus tax, which i think still comes out to $20+ ??? i forget
anyway, then he buys his Seat ? which i think is extra leg room or something and that's $49
he only carries a backpack otherwise they charge you for even a carry-on
$5 for a bottle of water I believe and they nickle & dime you for everything ... I think even a fee for a Ticket, unless you GO to the Airport and pick it up

So bottom line is that your $9.00 Ticket is really around $69 ( plus you are paying a membership fee )

I got multiple flights this past year on JetBlue from $59-$84, ( for Florida ) and has a TV, Snacks and plenty of Bottle water or Soda I want.

Sounds like easy jet in EU which we do take a lot, easy to hop around for weekend destinations, but they do nickel and dime everything. Easy jet is UK's biggest airline and their fleet is quite young so that's comforting in a sense, not sure about Spirit's fleet. When flying around CA/USA I go star alliance but I will take a look at Spirit next time - their livery is ugly as shite.

they always show up as the cheapest airfare, but the flights are like 16 hours including layovers

I can't stand a 2 hour layover, there is no way in hell I'll ever fly with them

You are obsessed with these 2 guys. You really are a flamer.

If you fly Spirit you have nobody to blame but yourself for being stuck at airport. Spirit is the Cleveland Browns of the airline industry.

Haha, I haven't talked to either in awhile. I don't mind Vit like most people do. I don't agree with the shit he says ever but we're cordial to one another.

I imagine there are not too many direct flights to Thailand from the east coast, sometimes you have no choice

well at least with 9 hours you can leave the airport and check out the city. I did that in Dublin ...

those 3-5 hour layovers are the worst. Can't leave most airports since they are usually outside the city and is boring as hell. had one of those at O'Hare on way from Maui to Pgh ... landed at like 1am and flight to Pit wasn't until 6am. wasn't leaving the airport at 1am and nothing open in the airport. that's good times ;(
