LOS ANGELES (KABC) --
The terminal shuffle for 21 airlines at Los Angeles International Airport begins Saturday, with the bulk of the work happening in the early morning hours.

May is considered a busy month for the airport, but over the Mother's Day weekend it shouldn't be as heavy for travelers.

Over the next five days, 15 airlines will move to different terminals. Officials suggest checking with the airline before arriving and looking at signs to get to the right area.

The biggest airline that is relocating is Delta, which is moving from terminals 5 and 6 to terminals 2 and 3. Delta officials said that switch will lead to less delays for takeoff and landings.

Before the shuffle, the three largest airlines at LAX - Delta, American Airlines and United - were all on the south side, which led to hang-ups at the gate.

Delta will now have more gates on the north side and plans to spend $1.9 billion to renovate terminals 2 and 3, as well as connect them to Tom Bradley International Terminal.

A total of 21 airlines will be moved around and six have already switched. The moves end on May 17.

See the list below for new terminal locations.

  • Terminal 2 - Delta, Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, Volaris and WestJet. Virgin Australia and Volaris customers check-in at T2 and are bused to TBIT for departure and arrivals. Aeromexico remains in Terminal 2 and relocates its ticketing counters; however, passengers will be bused to/from TBIT.

  • Terminal 3 - Delta. Avianca, Copa and InterJet check-in only.

  • Terminal 5 - Hawaiian, JetBlue, Spirit, Allegiant, Frontier and Sun Country. American has four gates, and its American Eagle busing operation is also based here.

  • Terminal 6 - Virgin America joins its corporate partner Alaska Airlines. Air Canada and XL Airways France relocate from Terminal 2. Great Lakes and Mokulele remain in Terminal 6. Boutique Air relocates from Terminal 3.

  • TBIT - Southwest Airlines' (SWA) international flights arrive at TBIT, while SWA's international departures and check-in remain in Terminal 1. Avianca, Copa and Interjet departure and arrivals at TBIT. Thomas Cook Airlines resumes seasonal service in May with departures and arrivals temporarily from TBIT.

Shuttle buses will also be available to take anyone who gets lost to the right terminal.

A friend of mine works for one of the construction companies hired on, he said they have been having issues with pay as well. In construction it can be pulling teeth to get paid on time from the customer, but they weren't expecting it from a big client. He works for a small company and thinks they are trying to stiff them because the little company won't have the power to fight it in court. Venetian hotel in Vegas was built the same way.

probably the strangest airport i've ever used for rental cars. waiting for a rental car bus for half hour then get driven into a different town was the least efficient rental car experience you can have. and then repeating that when trying to catch a flight out.... strange
