seem like in every sport these days the refs are a step behind the player and make bad calls after bad calls

It's not all their fault, the bureaucrats keep changing the rules making the games harder to officiate and much harder to watch

And the fucking idiots actually think they're doing something constructive

No way, the NHL is the worst by far. They call penalties based on who's winning, how close the game is, who had the last call or if it's regulation or overtime. It's bull shit. How can you have a penalty and a dive on the same play? Bull shit.

Seems like they just made a big bad game changing mistake in the NHL finals

Even MLB is regressing, with all the nonsense on the base paths and at the plate

it's no biggie. Game 1. Move on. Refs are following RULES. From their VIEWS AVAILABLE the skate was infront of the blue line -- OFF SIDE. Done. The NHL implemented the use of video replay to ensure fairness. The refs are doing their job. If the NHL following the season wants to re-evaluate and modify , they will

in soccer, a few yrs ago, I recall England scored a goal Vs Germany that the ref missed, he thought it hit the outer bar. It didnt , it was a goal, hitting the inner top bar-happened so fast the ref could not see. Is instant replay a value ? It's a fine line, but i believe most people would prefer blatant calls NOT MISSED.

I believe NFL & MLB are the worst.

We all know the how bad the NFL's refs can be, but MLB's umpires are probably the worst & most corrupt.
How & when did it ever come to the point that umpires can just totally ignore the game's rules & make up their own personal strike zones?!?
The MLB is the only sport in which the officials can blatantly ignore the games rules pusposely & the league doesnt do sh!t...

A replay which shows a player may have been offside by a millimeter is used to disallow a goal AFTER the defensive team gained possession and turned the puck over inside it's own end is not sports, it defeats the spirit of the game and the spirit of the rule.

As with both football and basketball, I believe a foul occurs when an advantage is gained or lost, just as the games have been played / called since their inception and for generations.

Recent rule changes want to change the game, like "freedom of movement" calls. Incidental contact away from the play changes the course of the games. Flopping and acting are now encouraged, even by offensive linemen in football for heaven's sake. Who would have ever thought that would be remotely possible in the not to distant past?

When it becomes about officials and interpretations of new rules, then it's no longer about sports.

Half of the shit they call today would be laughed at during pickup games, where it's still more about sports and not some drama queen production

As a whole, refs do a good job, but any error or even just a close call is so magnified nowadays with instant reaction from social media and news outlets hopping on the social media buzz.

It's no worse now than it was 20 years ago with strike zones. Umps have always had their "own" zone. NFL's rule changes hasn't helped as it adds to more borderline calls with some rules being more ambiguous. But again, as a whole they get it right. If there's call at the end of the game we can question, that just manufactures more content for talk shows for days after that we all participate in.

yup. No room for human error in sport, just in the real world? :) Can't suck and blow at the same time. Give me instant replay, minimize human error as sport is crazy fast. Do they modify and give the refs the use of greater discretion? 'it was only 1.5 inches offside, so its okay?'

i wouldn't have overturned that call. Way too close. They made a poor call, imo. BUT, that ain't going to decide this series.

grant it, i wouldnt have overturned it based on what I SAW (the angles, replays available to me)

i dont like the offside video replay. Think it slows the game down. I'd remove it. With 4 refs, rarely they will miss an obvious offside. That's just me

The refs are no different than they were 30 years ago. HD tech, super slo-mo and talk show cockroaches who want to blame every loss on a call are what has ruined things. The NFL found out how good the refs are when they hired replacements.
