KEY STAT: Russia have won three of their last 15 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Hosts Russia will be looking to build some momentum before next year's World Cup but it is difficult to place a large amount of faith in them at short odds for their Confederations Cup opener against New Zealand. The visitors don't offer a huge goalscoring threat but can keep the score respectable.

RECOMMENDATION: Russia to win 1-0

KEY STAT: Portugal have lost two of their last 17 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: This is a fascinating contest between the champions of Concacaf and Uefa and it could be honours even. Portugal are a tough nut to crack and possess the goalscoring power of Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, but Mexico have lost only two of their last 36 matches and are a technically gifted outfit themselves.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Chile have won the last two Copa America tournaments

EXPERT VERDICT: Chile have done well in South American tournaments in recent times and also went to the World Cup quarter-finals so they should be relishing this Confederations Cup campaign. There is some world-class talent in the Chile squad and they should be able to start with an opening success against Cameroon.

RECOMMENDATION: Chile

KEY STAT: Germany have lost one of their last 17 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Germany are sending a virtual B side to the Confederations Cup with the majority of their stars given the summer off but even so Joachim Low's squad should get off to a flyer against Australia. Germany have won all six competitive matches since the European Championship and in all of them they were leading at the break.

RECOMMENDATION: Germany-Germany double result

If Kansas City were able to play Los Angeles all the time, the Royals may be atop the standings in their division.

With last night's 3-1 win over the Angels, the Royals have now won all 5 series meetings this year over L.A., and 6 straight dating back to last year.

The Royals are also owning their current road trip, as last night's victory puts them at 6-1 with 6 straight wins on this west coast road swing!

More of the same tonight, as Jake Junis makes start # 4 this year, and takes a 2-0 mark onto the mound at Anaheim against Alex Meyer who owns a 1.62 ERA over his last 3 starts, but nary a win!

Meyer is 0-1 over those 3, and the Halos have lost all 3, and are just 2-6 when he takes a turn on the bump this season.

Side with the Royals to keep up their impressive road run, and their impressive series run with the win tonight.

4* KANSAS CITY

MLB | Giants vs Rockies
Play on: Rockies -156 at betonline

#MLB Free Pick from Mike Lundin
Play: Colorado Rockies
Rating: 5/10*

We won with the Colorado Rockies as a premium play on Friday, and I'm going back to the Rockies Saturday afternoon when they host the San Francisco Giants for Game 3 of a four-game series.

Colorado has won eight of nine meetings on the season and hands the ball to left-hander Kyle Freeland (7-4, 3.57 ERA) who was knocked around for five runs (four earned) in 5 2/3 innings in a 7-1 loss at Pittsburgh his last time out. I'm not worried about Freeland though, he's pitched well throughout the season and will most likely receive plenty of run support, plus the fact that San Francisco has struggled against southpaws all season.

Matt Cain (3-5, 5.22 ERA) will take the ball for the Giants, and he was tagged with five runs and seven hits through just 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against Minnesota in his last start. Cain is a pathetic 0-3 with an 8.40 ERA in six starts on the road this season, and pitching at Coors Field will do him no favors.

The Giants are 0-4 in Cain's last four starts vs. the Rockies and 3-12 in their last 15 vs. a team with a winning record.

Play on: UNDER 8½ -110

Nationals vs. Mets Under 8

This play just missed out on our premium card. The Washington Nationals and the New York Mets face off on Saturday afternoon and the under has a ton of value. On the mound for the Nationals is Stephen Strasburg who has been really good this year. In his last start he had some trouble against the Braves, but this is a great game for him to bounce back. Before that start he had given up a total of three runs in his previous three starts. He looks like the Stephen Strasburg of old that is absolutely fooling hitters out on the mound.

On the mound for the Mets is Seth Lugo. He has made one start giving up one run in seven innings pitched. Some trends to note. Under is 5-1 in Mets last 6 vs. National League East. Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in New York.

MLB | Dodgers vs Reds
Play on: Reds +147 at 5Dimes

I understand it's tough to get behind the Reds right now. They've lost seven in a row and have rookie Asher Wojciechowski pitching. The Dodgers are playing well with seven wins in their last eight games. But Cincinnati is an attractive home 'dog to me at this price. How's that? Let's begin with who the Dodgers are pitching. It's Hyun-Jin Ryu. He's on the comeback trail from elbow and shoulder injuries that limited him to one start last year. I don't think Ryu is long for staying in LA's starting pitching rotation with a 2-6 record and 4.42 ERA. The Dodgers are 0-7 during Ryu's past seven road starts. Ryu got to face the Reds just this past Sunday at Dodger Stadium, a much more pitcher-friendly stadium than Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park. The Reds got to Ryu for four runs on six hits - including three homers - in four innings before Ryu was pulled. The Reds lead the NL in steals and rank seventh in the majors in homers. They have five players with nine or more homers. The Dodgers are just mediocre on the road at 17-16. The key is can Wojciechowski turn in a quality start? I believe he can. He's proven himself so far at home with a 1.86 ERA at Great American Ball Park. Wojciechowski last pitched at home against St. Louis on June 5, two starts ago. He held the Cardinals to two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings. The Reds' bullpen is upgraded with Tony Cingrani back healthy. Dodgers ace closer Kenley Jansen carries a fatigue rating having pitched in three of the last four days.

Red Sox vs Astros Free Pick June 17, 2017.

The Red Sox beat the Astros in a 2-1 pitcher's duel at Minute Maid Park in Game 1, but I expect Game 2 to be more of a slugfest.

Rick Porcello will toe the rubber for the Red Sox, and he's not missing many bats this season. Porcello (3-8, 4.67 ERA) allowed five runs on 10 hits in six innings in a home win over Philly his last time out. He's conceded a whopping 66 hits over his last seven starts, and opponents are batting .310 against him in 2017.

The Astros hand the ball to David Paulino, who hasn't been sharp in three appearances. The 23 year old was torched for five runs on six hit and two walks over four innings in a 12-6 home loss to the Angels his last time out. He's failed to reach the fifth inning in two of his three starts, and he's been taken deep at least once in all three of those games.

Prior to last night's game, these two teams had gone over in six straight meetings. They've gone over in eight of the last 11 at Minutemaid Park, and the over is 9-4 in Porcello's last 13 road starts versus a team with a winning record.

Take OVER.

MLB | Padres vs Brewers
Play on: Brewers -152 at betonline

Play - Milwaukee Brewers w/Anderson (Game 908).

Edges - Brewers: Anderson 1.69 ERA and 1.07 WHIP at home this season; and 4-1 last five home team starts during June… Padres: 2-8 Saturdays, and 3-7 away Game Two of a series this season; and Lamet 8.50 ERA and 1.56 WHIP this season… With Anderson in strong KW form with 19 Ks and 3 BBs his last three starts, we recommend a 1* play on Milwaukee. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB | KC vs LAA
Play on: OVER 9 -120

1* Bonus Play OVER Royals/Angels.

“Gas cans” collide on Saturday night and all signs point to a classic “slugfest:”

Jake Junis: He’s 2-0 with a 4.67 ERA. Junis most recently gave up three runs off six hits over seven innings in a victory over the light-hitting Padres on Sunday, lucky as all three runs were dingers of the solo variety. It was the first time as well that he’s completed more than five innings, failing to do so in his first two major league tries. In his previous outing he was rocked for seven runs off nine hits over three innings in a loss to the Astros.

Alex Meyer: He’s 2-3 with a 4.05 ERA. Meyer is also coming off a “ho-hum” outing, allowing two runs off five hits and five walks over four innings in a no-decision against New York on Monday. Meyer has now issued at least four walks in five of his last eight trips to the hill and 29 total free passes in 40 innings of work.

The bottom line: Both starters are struggling with control right now. Recent form between these pitchers suggests that these line-ups are poised for a productive evening. Play the OVER.

MLB | CHC vs PIT
Play on: UNDER 8½ -110

1* Bonus Play under Cubs/Pirates. Jake Arrieta is 6-4 with a 4.46 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Ivan Nova is 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Arrieta is looking to rebound after a sub-par start against Colorado on Sunday, earning a no-decision after giving up four earned runs off five hits and three walks. He also struck out three. Arrieta had posted back-to-back quality outings previous to that though and his peripherals (9.74 K/9 and 4.10 FIP) and track record both suggest that he should be able to return to form sooner rather than later. Nova comes in off a gem against Miami on Sunday, going six scoreless, allowing just one hit while striking out four. The veteran needed just 77 pitches (50 of which went for strikes), so he’ll be fresh for tonight’s game (note that Nova is 4-2 with a tiny 2.29 ERA at home this year as well). Looks like we have a pitchers duel on our hands in this one.

MLB | Cubs vs Pirates
Play on: Pirates +120 at 5Dimes

Pirates +120

This play just missed out on our premium card. The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs face off on Saturday night, and with the pitching match up on the mound and this price, the Pirates have some value.

On the mound for the Cubs is Jake Arrieta who hasn't been as dominant as years past. He comes into this game with a 6-4 record but a high ERA of 4.68.

In his last start he only went 4.1 innings and gave up four earned runs. I would expect much of the same to happen in this game.

On the mound for the Pirates is Ivan Nova who has been pitching really well this year. He comes into this game with a 2.83 ERA.

In his last start he went six innings only giving up one hit and zero earned run. I think he will find a way to slow down the bats of the Cubs.

Some trends to note. Cubs are 3-13 in their last 16 road games. Pirates are 4-0 in Novas last 4 home starts vs. a team with a losing record.

Back the Pirates.

Saturday's six-pack

— Anthony Rizzo led off Friday’s game with a home run that was changed to a foul ball; Joe Maddon got thrown out…….before an out was recorded in the game.

— Cubs have only 4 quality starts in 14 games this month, one in their last nine games.

— Entering Friday night’s games, 48% of replay reviews resulted in overturned calls.

— Jimmer Fredette made 92-100 3-pointers at a charity exhibition this week. Amazing.

— Orioles drafted Zach Jarrett in the 28th round of the draft; he was a power-hitting outfielder for NC-Charlotte, and is the son of NASCAR legend Dale Jarrett.

— Four guys, including Paul Casey/Brooks Koepka, are tied atop the US Open leaderboard at -7.

Nine MLB things you may have missed while betting playoff basketball

We commence our inaugural 2017 Major League Baseball column with the following tidbit about the Houston Astros, the club that currently boasts the highest winning percentage in all the sport (45-22, .672): Of Houston’s 45 MLB victories so far this season, 37 (82.3 percent) have come by two or more runs.

For baseball bettors, this is an important nugget to consider because more often than not, the price that accompanies the backing of one of the best teams in the sport is just too high to justify the risk. Case in point: Take Tuesday’s Texas-Houston showdown in which Astros righty Brad Peacock closed at the heavy price of -190 before eventually falling 4-2 at home to the Rangers. Had you laid the -1.5 run line with the Astros, at least you wouldn’t have lost $190 for every $100 you attempted to win.

The run line can serve as a very powerful wagering option in the baseball gambler’s arsenal for those intrigued by the concept of backing favorites. The benefit, of course, is the limiting of risk, while the detriment comes in the form of having to win by two or more runs. This type of proposition is not for the faint of heart as it pertains to clubs like the Washington Nationals who, despite a healthy .600 winning percentage entering Thursday’s slate of games, ranks eighth in MLB in blown saves, with 11.

On the flip side, note that American League MVP favorite Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees have seen each of their last ten victories come by two or more runs.

The Major League Baseball run line: Learn it, study it, embrace it.

For those of you who are just now making the transition from NBA wagering to MLB wagering, here are nine factoids to file away as you attempt to grind out a profit during the summer months:

1. It’s no surprise whatsoever to see names like Clayton Kershaw (9-2) and Dallas Keuchel (9-0) atop the Major League Baseball wins column on June 15. But what is surprising is the fact that those aforementioned Cy Young winners are joined by 34-year-old Jason Vargas (9-3) of the dismal 30-34 Kansas City Royals. In his 12 decisions this season, Vargas has closed at an average price of +112 with only two of his nine victories coming as a favorite. Without a shadow of a doubt, Jason Vargas has been one of the best value bets in baseball so far this season.

2. When it comes to betting overs, keep a very close eye on the Mets (37-19-8, .660), Marlins (37-23-4, .616) and Reds (37-24-4, .606), who have all returned substantial profits for their backers in 2017.

3. As it pertains to betting Unders, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the Cleveland Indians (35-25-3, .583). Outside of the Tribe, none of the other 29 clubs have produced a highly favorable under record as of June 15.

4. What a difference a year makes: In San Francisco, Johnny Cueto turned an 18-5 campaign last year into a 5-6 record through the first 2.5 months of the 2017 season compliments of a 4.57 ERA, Cueto’s worst mark since his rookie season in 2008. Meanwhile, teammate Jeff Samardzija, who went 12-11 in 2016, currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 8 losses (2-8, 4.31 ERA). And how about 2016 American League Cy Young winner Rick Porcello, who went 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA last season? Funny you should ask because the 28-year-old is currently 3-8 with a 4.67 ERA so far in 2017. Three respectable pitchers in 2016 who have become three fade options less than one full year later.

5. Umpire alert: Home teams are 10-0 when Chad Whitson is behind the dish, 10-3 when Gerry Davis is calling balls and strikes, 10-4 when the honors go to Phil Cuzzi and 9-2 when its Paul Nauert.

6. Umpire alert part II: As it pertains to high scoring totals, 11.73 runs per game have been scored in Manny Gonzalez’s 11 games behind the plate this season (highest in MLB), while 11.58 runs per game have been scored in Sam Holbrook’s 12 contests behind the dish. On the flip side, just 6.77 runs per game are being averaged when Gerry Davis gets the call (13 games) and only 6.80 runs per game when the honors belong to Will Little (10 games).

7. MLB futures: With an MLB-best +114 run differential, give me the New York Yankees at 7/1 and the Houston Astros (+102, second in MLB) at 9/2 to win the World Series this season. With an NL-best run differential of +87, I’ll take the Los Angeles Dodgers at 5/1 to win the Series as well. Granted, I’m not exactly thinking outside the box here, but I feel as if I can get ahead of the market at these prices due to the fact that all three of those aforementioned clubs should be very active come the July trade deadline.

8. Of the Philadelphia Phillies’ last 22 losses, 17 have come by two or more runs. Remember what we said earlier about the MLB run line? Well, the Phillies currently rank 29th in MLB in run differential (-85).

9. Speaking of horrific run differentials, the San Diego Padres (-113, worst in MLB) haven’t lost a game by one run since May 13 against the Chicago White Sox (5-4 in Chicago). For those scoring at home, that means each of San Diego’s last 16 defeats have come by two or more runs.
