Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes has been airlifted to a medical facility after the truck he was in collided with a moving train Friday, UFC president Dana White told ESPN.

White said he's been in contact with Hughes' family, and that they are currently en route to the medical facility where the 43-year-old was taken.

"Apparently he has head trauma," White said. "His family is traveling to him now."

White did not know exactly where the accident took place. He said Hughes, who lives in Illinois, was apparently helping a friend with fieldwork when the accident occurred.

The UFC president says he was scheduled to fly to Paris for a public appearance, but White will likely cancel the trip due to this development.

No further details are available at this time. Hughes (45-9) held the UFC's welterweight championship at various points between 2001 and 2006. He is recognized as one of the greatest 170 pound fighters of all time. He retired from professional competition in 2011, but publicly stated he was considering a comeback fight earlier this year.

Update ...

Loretta Hunt (Sherdog.com) reported that she was told Hughes was currently in a coma.

This morning, BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor regrettably cited Hunt’s tweet as being accurate information.

Hughes is “awake and responsive” his longtime manager Monte Cox told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.

Cox, who is speaking directly with Hughes’ brother Matt, said family and doctors are “optimistic and hopeful” about Hughes’ condition.

“He is awake, but eyes closed,” Cox said. “Can squeeze hands.”

Hughes has pulled out of his coma according to an interview that close friend and fellow UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich gave The MMA Hour today.

Miletich gave some encouraging information about Hughes’ well-being. “He is surprising the doctors,” he said in the interview, as transcribed by MMAFighting.com. “He’s making great leaps and he’s no longer in a coma, and he’s improving. It’s going to be a long road. Any type of head trauma at that level, there’s going to be some rehab.”

He also shared some details about the collision ...

“The [train] engineer said, Matt had stopped on the gravel road. It’s a hill, goes up, it’s a real quick hill that goes up to the railroad tracks. He had stopped, then tried to get across it in time. The train was going almost 50 mph.

“When you’re out in the country, there’s no crossing guards, there’s no lights. It’s almost like, he saw it, then tried to beat it. What I would say is that, you’re on a gravel road out in country on a hill and you’re trying to punch it and get over, you’re going to swing tires, he didn’t get across in time and got clipped on the passenger side.”
