MLB | Giants vs Pirates
Play on: Giants -124 at 5Dimes

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Free Pick for Early MLB Sunday: San Francisco Giants Money Line (-) @ Pittsburgh Pirates @ 1:35 ET - The Pirates couldn't hit the Giants most hittable pitcher (Matt Moore) yesterday so that doesn't bode well for Pittsburgh Sunday as they now face Jeff Samardzija after losing 2-1 in extra innings yesterday. Samardzija has an ugly record on the road but he's certainly been victimized by some bad luck as he has a 1.12 WHIP away from home this season. The Giants have won 5 straight games and Pittsburgh has lost 6 of its last 10. The Pirates also have lost 3 straight starts made by Trevor Williams. Also, in his start prior to this 3-game losing streak, Williams allowed 5 earned runs in just 4 innings of work. Here we are getting a very reasonable price on the hotter team with the veteran hurler and we can fade a slumping team with an inexperienced pitcher whom has a 5.31 ERA at the MLB level so far in his career. I'll take it! Free Pick on San Francisco Giants on the money line early Sunday afternoon. Best of luck, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach

Play - Chicago White Sox w/Quintana vs Ross (Game 974).

With Ross 2-4 in his day starts as opposed to 5-0 at night this season, we recommend a 1* play on the Chicago White Sox. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB | LAD vs SDG
Play on: OVER 8 -120

1* Bonus Play on over Dodgers/Padres. Kenta Maeda (6-3, 4.15 ERA) has been hit-or-miss this year, but does come in off a good outing against the Angels on Tuesday, going seven scoreless in the victory (note though that LA was without sluggers Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Cameron Maybin in the line-up.) Maeda has admittedly looked better of late, but note that he’s struggled on the road all season, just 2-2 with a 5.46 ERA. Like his counterpart, Padres’ starter Jhoulys Chacin (6-7, 4.76) has been consistently inconsistent this year and most recently gave up two runs off seven hits over seven innings in a loss to Atlanta on Tuesday. Chacin has been better at home than on the road, but he’s still a horrible 1-2 with a 7.40 ERA in all “day” games. With these two often-volatile starters going head-to-head on Saturday afternoon, the over becomes a legitimate investment opportunity.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (46-35) at Toronto Blue Jays (37-43)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 1:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox are 46-35 at the season's halfway point and have taken over first place in the American League East as they try for a three-game sweep over the Blue Jays in Toronto on Sunday. Chris Sale, their ace left-hander, said it's only going to get better after he improved to 11-3 with another masterful performance in Saturday's 7-1 victory -- Boston's third in a row and fifth in six games.

"It's going to be fun when we get going," Sale told reporters after increasing his chances of starting in the All-Star Game. "It says a lot about our guys and our team that we've battled through some things schedule-wise, injury-wise and things like that. When we start putting it together, it's going to be a scary thing." Last-place Toronto (37-43), which has lost three straight and seven of its last nine contests, is 8 1/2 games behind the Red Sox. The Blue Jays are struggling to hit with runners in scoring position as they are batting .150 over the last five games and hit .160 in June at home in that situation. Boston's Drew Pomeranz is 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA in his last three turns and opposes Joe Biagini, who is probably making his final start with Aaron Sanchez poised to rejoin the rotation.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), TVA Sports, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (7-4, 3.81 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Joe Biagini (2-7, 4.50)

Pomeranz allowed one run (unearned) and four hits while striking out seven in five innings of a 9-2 victory over Minnesota on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Tennessee native is 4-1 in his last seven starts, yielding two runs or fewer in six contests and lowering his ERA by 1.16 during that span. Toronto's roster is batting .194 versus Pomeranz, who is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four games (two starts) versus the Blue Jays after pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief when last facing them Oct. 2.

Biagini permitted three runs, five hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings of a 3-1 loss to Baltimore on Tuesday. The 27-year-old Californian is 2-6 with a 4.93 ERA in 10 starts since coming out of the bullpen in his first 74 career games. Biagini is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in 11 games -- all in relief -- against Boston after retiring all seven batters he faced in back-to-back appearances against the Red Sox on April 19 and 20.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston scored twice in the first inning Saturday, increasing Toronto's ERA in the opening frame to 6.19 this season -- second-worst in the AL to Boston's 6.33.

2. The Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia extended his club record by recording his 100th straight errorless game at second base Saturday. The old standard of 98 was set by Pedroia in 2009 and 2010.

3. Blue Jays LF Steve Pearce homered Saturday and is 14-for-29 with two homers and seven RBIs in nine games since returning from a calf injury.

GAME: Cleveland Indians (43-37) at Detroit Tigers (36-44)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Justin Verlander has made more starts against the Cleveland Indians (50) than any other opponent and also has his most losses (22) against Detroit's American League Central rival. Verlander will get the nod for the Tigers on Sunday against the visiting Indians after the clubs split a doubleheader on Saturday following a rainout in Friday's opener.

Detroit received back-to-back homers from J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera in a 7-4 victory in the opener of the doubleheader but couldn't complete the sweep and fell to 4-10 in its last 14 games. Left fielder Justin Upton, who leads the Tigers in homers and RBIs, was a late scratch with soreness in his side and sat out both games Saturday. Jose Ramirez had a two-run blast as the Indians rebounded with a 4-1 win in the nightcap to improve to 25-16 away from home. Mike Clevinger will make the start Sunday for Cleveland, which is the only team in the division with a positive run-differential (plus-56).

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Mike Clevinger (3-3, 3.56 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (5-4, 4.47)

Despite registering a season-high nine strikeouts and holding Texas to one run on two hits over six innings, Clevinger has to settle for a no-decision on Tuesday. He failed to pitch beyond five innings in each of his previous three starts - all on the road - while giving up eight runs and eight walks in 13 innings. Clevinger is 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA and .174 batting average against in five starts away from home.

Verlander ended a six-start winless drought Tuesday, giving up three runs on nine hits over seven innings to beat Kansas City. The six-time All-Star notched a season-high 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings in his previous outing at Seattle, taking a no-decision after giving up three runs on four hits. Francisco Lindor and Ramirez are each 9-for-23 with a homer against Verlander, who is 20-22 versus Cleveland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers CF Mikie Mahtook is 4-for-8 in the series and has multiple hits in five of his last eight games.

2. Indians LF Michael Brantley has hit safely in all five games since coming off the disabled list.

3. Tigers DH Victor Martinez has one RBI in his last 16 games.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (26-53) at New York Mets (38-42)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets are making a run at .500 in front of the All-Star break and are winners of four straight. The Mets will try to make it five in a row and eight of nine when they host the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

New York is benefitting from a recent schedule that includes sub-.500 foes San Francisco, Miami and the Phillies but is doing what it needs to do against those clubs in the pitching department while allowing an average of 2.6 runs in the seven victories. The pitching wasn't quite as sharp on Saturday, when Zack Wheeler came off the disabled list and couldn't get through the fourth inning, but Asdrubal Cabrera capped a four-run seventh inning with a go-ahead, two-run homer and recorded multiple hits for the fifth time in eight games since coming off the disabled list. The Phillies (26-53) own the worst record in the majors and are losers of 18 of their last 23 contests. Philadelphia will try to avoid the sweep with rookie Nick Pivetta on the hill while New York counters with Rafael Montero.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (1-4, 5.40 ERA) vs. Mets RH Rafael Montero (1-4, 5.63)

Pivetta is coming off the worst start of his brief big-league career after serving up six runs on seven hits and five walks over 2 2/3 innings to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. The 24-year-old allowed a total of three runs and struck out 19 while walking three across 13 innings in his previous two turns but could not find his way into the win column. Pivetta is seeing the division-rival Mets for the first time.

Montero is getting an opportunity to keep a rotation spot and earned a win in a start at San Francisco last Sunday while surrendering one run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Dominican Republic native did not fare as well in his other two spot starts - allowing a total of eight runs in 6 2/3 innings - but thrived as a long reliever in two June appearances before earning another chance in the rotation. Montero suffered a loss in relief against Philadelphia on April 18, managing one out while yielding four runs - three earned - on four hits.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mets placed OF Michael Conforto (hand bruise) on the 10-day DL, retroactive to Wednesday.

2. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera is 0-for-12 with six strikeouts in his last four games.

3. New York INF T.J. Rivera is 5-for-11 with three extra-base hits and three RBIs in his last three contests.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (32-51) at Pittsburgh Pirates (37-44)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants happen to play in a division with the three best teams in the National League, so digging itself out of a big hole from the first half of the season remains a long shot. Still, the surging Giants are beginning to look like a contender again and have a chance to earn their sixth straight win when they visit the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

San Francisco (32-51) spent most of the first three months toiling at the bottom of the NL West but is starting to win some close games and got 5 1/3 scoreless innings from the bullpen on Saturday in a 2-1, 11-inning triumph. Right-hander Sam Dyson is settling in and earned his first save with the Giants on Saturday while recording his seventh scoreless appearance in his last eight outings. The Pirates would like to get back into the race as well but are struggling to sustain any momentum and are losers of nine of their last 16. Pittsburgh will try to avoid the sweep behind Trevor Williams, who opposes San Francisco veteran Jeff Samardzija.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), ROOT Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (3-9, 4.63 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (3-3, 4.82)

Samardzija snapped a three-start winless streak by holding the Colorado Rockies to two runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings on Monday. The Notre Dame product did not walk a batter in that start and has yielded a total of 13 free passes in 105 innings while striking out 117. Samardzija started twice against Pittsburgh last season and did not factor in the decision in either outing while allowing a total of nine runs in nine frames.

Williams was held out of the decision in each of his last four turns but is coming off a start against Tampa Bay on Tuesday in which he scattered two runs and six hits across seven innings. The 25-year-old matched a season high with seven strikeouts against the Rays. Williams is making his first career start against San Francisco and is 0-1 with a 4.79 ERA at home in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates CF Starling Marte is serving an 80-game suspension for a positive PED test but will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday in the minors and is eligible to rejoin the majors on July 18.

2. San Francisco CF Denard Span is 12-for-25 in his last five starts.

3. Pittsburgh 1B Josh Bell drove in the team's lone run on Saturday and recorded an RBI in each of the last four contests.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (43-40) at Baltimore Orioles (39-41)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Logan Morrison was re-signed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract in early February by the Tampa Bay Rays and it may end up being one of the best bargains in the offseason. The 29-year-old first baseman will attempt to add to his career-high home run total of 24 on Sunday as the visiting Rays go for a three-game sweep of the American League East-rival Baltimore Orioles.

Morrison passed his previous high of 23 blasts with the Florida Marlins in 2011 on Saturday when he went deep twice in Tampa Bay’s 10-3 rout of the Orioles, and has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games to raise his average from .240 to .256. Surging Alex Cobb tries to complete the sweep for the Rays and Baltimore hopes to salvage the series finale as it sends fellow right-hander Kevin Gausman to the mound. Jonathan Schoop provided most of the offense for the Orioles on Saturday with a two-run homer and has recorded multiple hits in seven of his last 11 contests. Baltimore has surrendered 16 runs in the first two games of the series after winning four of its previous five contests to climb back to .500.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Alex Cobb (6-5, 3.73 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (4-7, 6.07)

Cobb took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Pittsburgh on Tuesday but settled for a no-decision after allowing two hits over eight scoreless innings. The 29-year-old Boston native is 2-0 over his last four starts, yielding five earned runs over 27 2/3 innings with 18 strikeouts and six walks in that span. Manny Machado (2-for-17, one homer) has struggled against Cobb, who is 4-1 with a 2.00 ERA in nine career games versus Baltimore.

Gausman snapped a three-start losing streak by limiting Toronto to four hits in 5 1/3 scoreless frames on Tuesday with four strikeouts. The 26-year-old LSU product permitted 15 runs on 23 hits over 14 2/3 innings during the losing streak and finished with a 6.41 ERA in June. Trevor Plouffe is 4-for-9 with two doubles and a homer versus Gausman, who is 3-4 with a 4.80 ERA in 11 appearances (nine starts) against the Rays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay RF Steven Souza Jr. is 5-for-9 with four runs scored, two homers and four RBIs in the first two games of the series.

2. Baltimore CF Adam Jones, who is one RBI behind Ken Singleton (766) for fifth on the franchise’s all-time list, is 5-for-28 with eight strikeouts in his last seven games.

3. The Rays snapped a six-series winless streak (0-5-1) against the Orioles on Saturday and can post their first three-game road sweep of the season one day later.

GAME: Texas Rangers (40-41) at Chicago White Sox (35-45)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers will try to finish a long road trip on a positive note when they take on the host Chicago White Sox in the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday afternoon. After blowing a ninth-inning lead in an 8-7 loss in the opener, the Rangers bounced back with three home runs in a 10-4 triumph over the White Sox on Saturday.

Elvis Andrus, Mike Napoli and Rougned Odor each went deep and Nomar Mazara drove in three runs as Texas improved to 4-5 on the 10-game swing and got back within a game of .500. Chicago, which had won six in a row over the Rangers at home prior to Saturday, dropped to 3-6 on its homestand as it manged just four hits against two Texas pitchers. Jose Abreu's two-run homer was one of those four hits and he has gone deep in each of the first two games of the series, all after slugging his first 13 long balls of the season on the road. White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia (knee) was out of the lineup for the third straight game but told reporters he hopes to play Sunday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Tyson Ross (1-1, 6.14 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Jose Quintana (4-8, 4.37)

Ross will be making his fourth start since returning from thoracic outlet surgery and hopes to duplicate his most recent effort. He gave up a run and two hits in six innings at Cleveland his last time out, striking out five in the no-decision. The 30-year-old, who is 8-3 with a 1.85 ERA in his career in July, has won all three of his games (two starts) against the White Sox in his career while allowing just three earned runs in 16 1/3 innings.

Quintana fell to 2-8 with a 5.30 ERA after a rocky outing at Cleveland on June 11, but has rebounded to go 2-0 with a 0.90 mark over a three-start turnaround. His last two opponents - Minnesota and the New York Yankees - have failed to score while amassing seven hits in 13 innings against the Colombia native. Quintana blanked the Rangers over seven frames in their one meeting last year but may need to be careful with outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, who is 6-for-12 with five doubles against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers manager Jeff Banister indicated Saturday the team would go with a closer-by-committee after RHP Matt Bush blew his third save in a span of five appearances in Friday's loss.

2. White Sox starting pitchers have a 5.36 ERA over the past 38 games.

3. Texas returns home Monday for six games before the All-Star break, while Chicago will play six in a row on the road prior to the intermission.

GAME: Miami Marlins (35-44) at Milwaukee Brewers (44-39)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, July 02 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The rest of the National League Central keeps waiting for the Milwaukee Brewers to fall off the pace, but they are not being very cooperative. The Brewers will try to lock up their fourth straight win and increase their lead in the Central when they host the Miami Marlins in the finale of a three-game set on Sunday.

Milwaukee owns one of the more powerful offenses in the league and showed off with a pair of home runs in Saturday's 8-4 triumph while increasing their lead in the NL Central to three games. "I know we are a long (way) from the season being over, so we just have to go out there and just play and try to win ballgames every day," Domingo Santana, who hit his 14th homer during a seven-run rally in the second inning, told reporters. "I think we're going to be where we want to be at the end of the season if we keep doing what we've been doing." The Marlins are having trouble finding their own offense and are averaging 2.3 runs during a four-game slide. Miami will try to turn things around on Sunday against Brewers right-hander Junior Guerra, who opposes Dan Straily.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Dan Straily (5-4, 3.44 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Junior Guerra (1-2, 4.54)

Straily surrendered a total of three runs in 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts but owns just one win in that span. The California native owns 90 strikeouts in 89 innings over 16 starts in 2017 and is holding opposing batters to a .214 average. Straily faced Milwaukee four times in 2016 and went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Guerra allowed three or fewer earned runs in six straight starts after rejoining the team at the end of May but had that streak come to an end at Cincinnati on Tuesday. The Venezuela native was lit up for eight runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings by the Reds while surrendering four home runs. Guerra is making his first career appearance against Miami.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers OF Ryan Braun (calf) hit safely in all four games since coming off the disabled list with four extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs.

2. Miami OF Marcell Ozuna is 4-for-27 over his last eight games.

3. Milwaukee rookie LHP Josh Hader has yet to allow a run in seven appearances.

PREDICTION: Marlins 5, Brewers 3
