CFL Betting Recap - Week 2

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 2
-- Underdogs went 4-0 ATS in Week 2
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 2
-- Road teams posted a 4-0 ATS record in Week 2
-- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 2

Analysis

If you're scoring at home, so far it's been a day for the 'dogs in Canadian Football League action. Underdogs were also a perfect 4-0 ATS in Week 1, bringing the total so far this season 0-8 ATS so far for the favorites. Road teams have hit at a 6-2 ATS clip so far, a trend we saw often during the early going during the 2016 season. In fact, road teams started out 16-2-2 ATS through the first five weeks last season, and 29-9-2 ATS through the first 10 weeks until home teams finally covered in a majority of the games. That didn't occur until a five-week slate in Week 11 when home teams finally posted a 4-1 ATS mark.

As far as the total is concerned, the 'under has edged out the 'over' 5-3 through two weeks. Last season in Week 1 we saw a 2-2 split, followed by six consecutive weeks with the under dominating at 3-1, or 2-1-1 in Week 3. The under was 19-8-1 through the first seven weeks until a 2-2 split in Week 8, followed by the first over majority in Week 9 when the offenses finally started to take control.

Might we see a similar trend in Week 3 and beyond? We'll see. So far only the two Grey Cup participants from last season, Calgary (1-0-1) and Ottawa (0-1-1) look to be the dominant offenses again, while perhaps Winnipeg (1-0) and maybe BC Lions (1-1) look to have any semblance of consistency in the early going.

Team Betting Notes

-- The two Grey Cup combatants from last season played a second consecutive game, this time on the plains of Southern Alberta. It didn't end in a tie like last week's opener in Canada's capital city. However, it was a familiar result for the RedBlacks, who fell 43-39 in Calgary. Ottawa fell to 0-1-1 SU, although they're an impressive 2-0 ATS on the season. And really, they won the matchup that mattered in the Grey Cup last season.

-- The Stampeders are 3-0-2 SU in the past five regular season meetings with the RedBlacks. One thing that is certain, there will be a lot of points when the teams clash. The over is 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings, and 7-1-1 in nine all-time battles.

-- Toronto (1-1) is on deck for Ottawa, as they search for their first victory in a return home in Week 3. The Argos won as 3 1/2-point 'dogs in Week 1 against Hamilton (0-1), but it was BC coming in and spoiling the party by a 28-15 count with the Argos favored by two points at Rogers Centre on Friday. The 'under' has cashed in each of Toronto's games so far, but that will be put to the test in Week 3 against the high-scoring RedBlacks.

-- Winnipeg (1-0) kicked off its season after a bye in Week 1, and they won a thriller in Saskatchewan (0-2) by a 43-40 count in overtime. The Bombers fell behind 10-0 after the opening quarter, and a late flurry by the Riders forced OT. But Winnipeg capped it off in the extra session, and they might be an offense to monitor.

-- For the Roughriders, they're 0-2 SU, but they have lost by a total of four points through two games. They look much improved and they're averaging 28.0 PPG despite the two setbacks. Next up they will face a second straight opponent coming off a bye as the TiCats visit Regina.

-- As mentioned, the Lions went to Toronto and won. That erased a sour taste in their mouth following a 30-27 setback in the opener against the Eskimos. BC's defense was much better, allowing just 15 points to the Argos, and the 'under' has now hit in each of their two outings. They'll travel to Montreal (1-1) in Week 3, facing an Alouettes team which has also had the 'under' hit in their two contests.

-- The Eskimos are averaging 26.5 points per game so far, but it's their defense which has been the story in their two victories. The Esks are holding opponents to 23.0 points per game, including just 19 against the Alouettes. The 'under' has hit in each of their two outings.

Friday's CFL betting preview and odds: Stampeders at Blue Bombers

Matt Nichols threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns in his first game since extending his contract in the offseason and Weston Dressler caught six passes for 124 yards and two scores en route to earning one of the CFL Top Performer of the Week honours.

Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+3.5, 58.5)

The Calgary Stampeders look to stay unbeaten when they hit the road to face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday. The Stampeders tied the Ottawa Redblacks 31-31 in a rematch of the 2016 Grey Cup in Week 1 before pulling out a 43-39 victory in the second game of a home-and-home set with the Redblacks, and hope to continue their mastery of the Blue Bombers by notching their seventh consecutive win in the series.

Calgary has won eight straight games in Winnipeg, including a 33-18 victory at Investors Group Field last season, while putting up 32 or more points in five of its last six visits. The Blue Bombers, who had a Week 1 bye, opened up the season with a thrilling 43-40 overtime victory against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Canada Day. Justin Medlock kicked a 28-yard field goal in the second overtime to spoil the party in Regina, and Winnipeg turns its attention to ending a lengthy run of futility against the Stampeders. The Blue Bombers haven't beaten Calgary at home since a 42-20 victory July 10, 2009 and hope to prove they're legitimate West Division title contenders and exorcise some past demons in the process.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The Stampeders opened as 3.5-point road chalk and that number was briefly bet down to three before returning to the opening number. The total hit the betting board at 56 and has been bumped up all the way to 59.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (1-0-1 SU, 0-2 ATS, 2-0 O/U): Wide receiver DaVaris Daniels, who was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie in 2016, is expected to be back in the lineup after missing last week's game against Ottawa with a shoulder injury. Micah Johnson and Charleston Hughes, who have combined for four sacks in two games this season, sat out practice earlier in the week but Calgary coach Dave Dickenson expects both defensive ends to play Friday. Veteran kicker Rene Paredes continues to struggle as he missed three extra points last week after sending a potential game-winning 37-yard field goal wide of the mark in the opener.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U): Matt Nichols threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns in his first game since extending his contract in the offseason and Weston Dressler caught six passes for 124 yards and two scores en route to earning one of the CFL Top Performer of the Week honours. Medlock made 5-of-5 field goals, including two in overtime, after setting a CFL record for most field goals in a season with 60 in 2016. Defensive back/kick returner Kevin Fogg was forced to leave the game in the first half with a lower-body injury and his status for Friday is unknown while offensive tackle Jermarcus Hardrick suffered a knock in the third quarter, but is expected to suit up against the Stampeders.

TRENDS:

* Stampeders are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.

* Blue Bombers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog.

* Over is 4-0 in Stampeders last 4 games as a favorite of 3.5-10.0.

* Over is 7-1 in Blue Bombers last 8 games overall.

* Over is 2-0-2 in the last 4 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The road chalk Stampeders are getting 59 percent of the action from users and the Over is picking up 59 percent of the totals wagers.

EXTRA POINTS:

* The Stampeders have won 15 of their last 16 meetings with the Blue Bombers.

* Calgary QB Bo Levi Mitchell is tied for the league lead in touchdown passes with five through two games.

* Winnipeg recorded two interceptions in Week 1 after leading the CFL with 30 in 2016.

MLB | OAK vs SEA
Play on: UNDER 8 -120

My selection is on the 'under' between Oakland and Seattle at 10:10 pm et on Friday.

I'll back the 'under' at Safeco Field in Seattle on Friday night.

Sean Manaea will take the ball for the A's. He is quietly putting together a fine campaign, having gone 7-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. He worked into the eighth inning in a hard luck 4-3 loss to the Braves last time out. Note that Manaea has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his last nine outings.

James Paxton will counter for Seattle. He's been terrific this season, going 6-3 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Here at home, Paxton has been at his absolute best, recording a 2.68 ERA. Paxton was masterful in his last start, needing only 87 pitches to get through 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run in a 5-3 win over the Angels.

Play - Philadelphia Phillies w/Pivetta vs Richard (Game 904).

Edges - Phillies: Pivetta 3.50 ERA with 1.11 WHIP home as opposed to 5.56 ERA with 1.76 WHIP away this season… Padres: Richard 0-3 career team starts vs Philadelphia, and 0-4 last 4 away team starts during June, and 0-2 vs NL East this season… With the Phillies 10-2 the last 12 home games in this series, we recommend a 1* play on Philadelphia. Thank you and good luck as always.

Play on: OVER 10½ +100

1* Bonus Play over Orioles/Twins. Kevin Gausman (5-7, 5.61 ERA) looks poised for a letdown here in my opinion after coming off his best start of 2017, going seven scoreless in a victory over the Rays on Sunday. Guasman has looked a bit better of late, but note that he’s a horrible 2-4 with a 7.60 ERA on the road this year. Felix Jorge (1-0, 5.40) has been called up from Double-A to make this start. In his lone spot start against KC over the weekend, Jorge gave up three runs off seven hits over five innings. Clearly the book is still out on the rookie as the sample size is just too small. Recent form displayed by these two pitchers suggests we could have a bit of a “slug-fest” on our hands in this one. Consider the over.

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (40-46) at Chicago Cubs (42-43)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 07 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs are counting on a big second half, and they need to gain some positive momentum with a strong performance in their final series before the All-Star break. The Cubs host the Pittsburgh Pirates for their final three games before the break, beginning with Friday’s series opener.

Chicago can’t wait to get back on the field after an ugly showing in an 11-2 loss to National League Central-leading Milwaukee on Thursday. “That game goes in the trash can as quickly as any game we’ve ever played,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters. “We just didn't pitch well early, and it's very difficult to fight back from that moment.” Inconsistent starting pitching has been a concern all season for the Cubs, who hope Eddie Butler can give them another solid outing at home after going 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in five starts there this season. The streaky Pirates have won three straight following a four-game skid and are seven games behind the Brewers and 2 1/2 in back of the Cubs.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT Pittsbugh, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Trevor Williams (3-3, 4.67 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Eddie Butler (4-3, 4.18)

Williams has not factored in the decision in any of his last five outings, and the Pirates have lost the last four contests he has started. The 25-year-old has pitched well enough to win over that stretch, recording three straight quality starts. Williams has made one start and two relief appearances against the Cubs – all this season – and is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 innings.

Butler fell apart in the fourth inning of his start at Cincinnati on Saturday and was charged with four runs and five hits in 3 2/3 frames. The 26-year-old has issued three or more walks in three of his last four turns and six of 10 outings this season. Butler is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against the Pirates, including a no-decision at Pittsburgh on June 16.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo has reached base safely in 26 of his last 28 starts.

2. Pirates OF Gregory Polanco went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs on Thursday and is 11-for-24 during his six-game hitting streak.

3. The Cubs are 21-15 against the NL Central and 21-28 versus non-division opponents.

GAME: San Diego Padres (36-49) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-56)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 07 - 6:35 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres have endured considerable troubles away from Petco Park this season while the majors-worst Philadelphia Phillies have struggled regardless of venue. The Padres look to rebound after seeing their three-game road winning streak come to a halt when they continue their trek on Friday with the first of three contests versus the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Cory Spangenberg went 3-for-7 with a homer and three RBIs as San Diego opened its interleague series against Cleveland with two victories before going 1-for-3 with a run scored on Thursday as the Padres fell to 14-27 on the road following an 11-2 setback. The 26-year-old is just 5-for-29 with eight strikeouts in his career versus Philadelphia and will get his first look at rookie Nick Pivetta. The Phillies' right-hander fared well in his last outing against the New York Mets and the team followed that up with a 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh, which then summarily outscored its Keystone State rival by a 14-5 margin to win the last three games of the set. Maikel Franco collected a pair of hits in Thursday's 6-3 setback to improve to 6-for-19 with two homers, six RBIs and five runs scored in the last five contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (5-8, 4.85 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (2-4, 4.85)

Richard was greeted rudely with a grand slam in the first inning of his last start and finished up allowing seven runs in 4 1/3 frames of a 10-4 setback to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 33-year-old was taken deep twice and issued four walks, marking the fourth straight trip to the mound that he has surrendered multiple free passes after permitting just three total in a six-game stretch. Richard hasn't fared well versus Philadelphia, dropping all four of his career decisions despite registering a 3.86 ERA.

Pivetta answered a disastrous start with a strong one on Sunday, allowing one run on as many hits over seven innings in a 7-1 rout of the Mets. The 24-year-old British Columbia native worked seven frames for the second time in 10 career starts and represented quite the turn around from permitting six runs in 2 2/3 innings against Arizona on June 26. Pivetta has endured control issues throughout the season, yielding at least four walks in two straight outings and in five of 10 overall.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera is 6-for-14 in the last four games after going hitless with six strikeouts in his previous four.

2. San Diego 1B Wil Myers is 1-for-19 with 12 strikeouts in the last five contests.

3. The Padres' win total on the road is one more than just one other team in the National League - the Phillies.

PREDICTION: Phillies 3, Padres 2
