CFL | Toronto vs Ottawa
Play on: Ottawa -4 -115 at BMaker

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Saturday CFL Free Pick Ottawa Redblacks (-) vs Toronto Argonauts @ 7 ET - The Redblacks are the defending Grey Cup Champions and yet they're staring up in the standings at the Argonauts. That, plus the fact that Ottawa did lose a home game to Toronto last season, absolutely ensures that the Redblacks bring the proper focus for this one. Keep in mind Ottawa's first two games this season were both against Calgary and the Stampeders were the #1 team in the regular season last year and faced the Redblacks for the Grey Cup. Conversely, Toronto got hammered by BC last week after defeating a lesser team (Hamilton) in Week 1. The point is that the Argos already showed what is likely to happen when they step up in class and that is the case again here. The first two weeks of the season the dogs covered all 8 games but, as you might have expected, a shift has now taken place and the favorites have covered both games so far this week. This looks like another spot where the favorite, still winless on the season, is going to exert their will against an over-matched foe. Play OTTAWA minus the short number as your Free Pick in early evening CFL action Saturday. Best of luck, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach

MLB betting at the break: Best and worst wagers so far this season

The All-Star break is nearly upon us and that means it’s time to take stock of the good, the bad and the ugly MLB bettors have witnessed during the season’s first half.

Let’s review the best and worst bets of the first three months of the 2017 season.

Best runline team

Houston Astros: 51-35

The runline, for novice baseball bettors, is just like a puckline in hockey. It’s a way to bet baseball games with a spread rather than a moneyline. The runline is always + or -1.5 runs.

It should come as no surprise that the best team in baseball is also the best runline bet. The Astros own the best road record in the majors, which plays a big part in their 51-35 runline record. The few games the ‘Stros are not favored normally happen away from Minute Maid Park.

It helps too when Houston’s starters at the backend of the rotation are winning at a handsome clip.

Worst runline team

Chicago Cubs: 32-53

A .500 record in baseball isn’t anything to get too worried or too excited about. It’s a lot like favored rice crackers in the snack tree. It’s fine.

The problem with the Cubbies is that they’re coming off a coming off a 103-win season. A .500 record for this team would be like Ryan Gosling dating a 7. OK, she’s not ugly but you’re Ryan effing Gosling! What the hell are you doing with a 7?

Oddsmakers favor the team frequently because of the high expectations and the talent on the roster. The Cubs are still among the top favorites to win the World Series at 10/1 despite their mediocre first half.

Best Over team

New York Mets: 48-25-10

The Tampa Rays have cashed more Over tickets (51) but the high number of pushes keeps the Mets as the most profitable Over bet.

New York’s whole identity from 2016 has flip-flopped a year later. Last season the Mets allowed the third fewest runs and only four teams touched home plate less often than the Mets.

This season, the Mets own the third worst team ERA at 4.92 and their offense is middle of the pack. Oddsmakers have adjusted but if you were betting the Over with the Mets in the first two months of the season, you were winning at a 73.8 percent rate.

Best Under team

Cleveland Indians: 30-49-5

You’d think the Indians would be a good Over team in 2017 with the addition of professional ball-blaster Edwin Encarnacion and a healthy Michael Brantley in the lineup.

The club’s offense is on par with last year’s run produced per game, but that’s just not good enough to stay in elite company with 2017’s jacked home run rate.

Last season, the average MLB team scored 4.5 runs per game. This year, that number has climbed to 4.7.

Best money team

Houston Astros: $1960

Moneyline, as we all know, helps us measure how profitable a given team is based on $100 wagers on each of the club’s games. So, if you bet $100 on the ‘Stros in each of their games you be up $1960 or 19.6 units.

Same reasoning here for the Astros as there was for their runline record. They own the best record in the majors, they win games with their fourth and fifth starters and they’re winning 76 percent of their road games.

Worst money team

San Francisco Giants: -$2179

It doesn’t help playing in a division with three teams playing .570 or better. It also doesn’t help when you’re most effective starting pitcher is Johnny Cueto.

The Giants blog McCovey Chronicles asked an excellent question: Who would be the Giants All-Star selection this year if Buster Posey wasn’t on the team?
Search me. This team stinks.

Best money starting pitcher

Clayton Kershaw: $1160

Just a reminder: Clayton Kershaw is really fricken’ good. The Dodgers are 16-2 in games he’s taken the hill including that gem on Tuesday when threw seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

If Kershaw is too expensive for your taste, consider Jason Vargas. He might be the pitching story of the first half of the season for bettors.

The journeyman hurler is putting together his finest season in his 14th year in the bigs. The Kansas City Royals are 13-4 in his 17 starts and up 10.8 units.

Worst money starting pitcher

Jerad Eickhoff: -$1053

It could have been any Philadelphia Phillies starter, really. Eickhoff just has the… honor(?) of being the Phils ace of the rotation. He’s come back down to earth after a breakout year in 2016. He carries a 4.93 ERA and the Phillies are just 2-12 in his 14 starts this season.

Friday's schedule has two games on the board and both feature the road team laying the points: The Indiana Fever are giving 1.5 points to the hosts Atlanta Dream while the San Antonio Stars are getting 10.5 points from the visiting Phoenix Mercury. The Mercury are just 2-2 ATS as road favorites while the Fever are 2-0 as away chalk this season.

Looking ahead, the Minnesota Lynx are 6-1 ATS as road faves and should be big favorites again when they visit the Chicago Sky Saturday. The Connecticut Sun are 9-1 against the number in their 10 away tilts and play their next away game in Seattle Wednesday.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 2

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 2
-- Underdogs went 4-0 ATS in Week 2
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 2
-- Road teams posted a 4-0 ATS record in Week 2
-- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 2

Analysis

If you're scoring at home, so far it's been a day for the 'dogs in Canadian Football League action. Underdogs were also a perfect 4-0 ATS in Week 1, bringing the total so far this season 0-8 ATS so far for the favorites. Road teams have hit at a 6-2 ATS clip so far, a trend we saw often during the early going during the 2016 season. In fact, road teams started out 16-2-2 ATS through the first five weeks last season, and 29-9-2 ATS through the first 10 weeks until home teams finally covered in a majority of the games. That didn't occur until a five-week slate in Week 11 when home teams finally posted a 4-1 ATS mark.

As far as the total is concerned, the 'under has edged out the 'over' 5-3 through two weeks. Last season in Week 1 we saw a 2-2 split, followed by six consecutive weeks with the under dominating at 3-1, or 2-1-1 in Week 3. The under was 19-8-1 through the first seven weeks until a 2-2 split in Week 8, followed by the first over majority in Week 9 when the offenses finally started to take control.

Might we see a similar trend in Week 3 and beyond? We'll see. So far only the two Grey Cup participants from last season, Calgary (1-0-1) and Ottawa (0-1-1) look to be the dominant offenses again, while perhaps Winnipeg (1-0) and maybe BC Lions (1-1) look to have any semblance of consistency in the early going.

Team Betting Notes

-- The two Grey Cup combatants from last season played a second consecutive game, this time on the plains of Southern Alberta. It didn't end in a tie like last week's opener in Canada's capital city. However, it was a familiar result for the RedBlacks, who fell 43-39 in Calgary. Ottawa fell to 0-1-1 SU, although they're an impressive 2-0 ATS on the season. And really, they won the matchup that mattered in the Grey Cup last season.

-- The Stampeders are 3-0-2 SU in the past five regular season meetings with the RedBlacks. One thing that is certain, there will be a lot of points when the teams clash. The over is 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings, and 7-1-1 in nine all-time battles.

-- Toronto (1-1) is on deck for Ottawa, as they search for their first victory in a return home in Week 3. The Argos won as 3 1/2-point 'dogs in Week 1 against Hamilton (0-1), but it was BC coming in and spoiling the party by a 28-15 count with the Argos favored by two points at Rogers Centre on Friday. The 'under' has cashed in each of Toronto's games so far, but that will be put to the test in Week 3 against the high-scoring RedBlacks.

-- Winnipeg (1-0) kicked off its season after a bye in Week 1, and they won a thriller in Saskatchewan (0-2) by a 43-40 count in overtime. The Bombers fell behind 10-0 after the opening quarter, and a late flurry by the Riders forced OT. But Winnipeg capped it off in the extra session, and they might be an offense to monitor.

-- For the Roughriders, they're 0-2 SU, but they have lost by a total of four points through two games. They look much improved and they're averaging 28.0 PPG despite the two setbacks. Next up they will face a second straight opponent coming off a bye as the TiCats visit Regina.

-- As mentioned, the Lions went to Toronto and won. That erased a sour taste in their mouth following a 30-27 setback in the opener against the Eskimos. BC's defense was much better, allowing just 15 points to the Argos, and the 'under' has now hit in each of their two outings. They'll travel to Montreal (1-1) in Week 3, facing an Alouettes team which has also had the 'under' hit in their two contests.

-- The Eskimos are averaging 26.5 points per game so far, but it's their defense which has been the story in their two victories. The Esks are holding opponents to 23.0 points per game, including just 19 against the Alouettes. The 'under' has hit in each of their two outings.

Saturday's CFL doubleheader betting preview and odds

Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Trevor Harris received one of the CFL Top Performer of the Week honours after throwing for 425 yards and two touchdowns in Week 2.

Toronto Argonauts at Ottawa Redblacks (-4, 55.5)

The Ottawa Redblacks look for their first win of the season when they host the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday. The Redblacks have stumbled out of the starting blocks as they played out a 31-31 tie with the Calgary Stampeders before dropping a 43-39 decision in the Week 2 rematch, and the defending Grey Cup champions hope to find their groove in their first East Division clash of the campaign.

"If you let losses stick with you they're going to leak into the next week," Ottawa quarterback Trevor Harris told reporters. "We have an Eastern game and we have to come out fighting and ready to roll." The Argonauts came crashing down to earth after a promising Week 1 victory as they fell 28-15 to the BC Lions. Toronto was held to one touchdown after piling up 524 yards of total offence in its season-opening 32-15 victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but were held to 143 net yards against the Lions, and hope to put the loss in the rearview mirror as the Argonauts prepare for their first road trip of the season. "They are the defending champs and in reality this is going to be a statement game for us," Toronto defensive back Rico Murray told reporters. "It will tell us where we're heading as a team and what direction."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The Redblacks opened as 5.5-point home chalk against the Argos and that spread has been bet steadily down to four. The total hit the betting board at 55 and was bet up to a full point to 56, before fading down to 55.5. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-2 O/U): Ricky Ray completed 30-of-45 passes for 327 yards and a touchdown against BC to move within two passing TDs of becoming the sixth quarterback in CFL history to throw for 300 in his career. Armanti Edwards, who led Appalachian State to its historic upset of Michigan in 2007, continued his hot start to the season as he caught 10 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown against the Lions. Veteran running back Brandon Whitaker is expected to return to the lineup after missing a game as he took reps with the first-team offence during the week.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (0-1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS, 2-0 O/U): Diontae Spencer was named one of the CFL Top Performers of the Week after racking up 351 yards of total offence and two touchdowns, including an electrifying 96-yard punt return score in the loss to Calgary. Trevor Harris also received one of the CFL Top Performer of the Week honours after throwing for 425 yards and two touchdowns. Running back William Powell missed last week's game through injury, but is expected to return after practicing during the week and A.J. Jefferson, who spent the previous two years with the Argonauts, could recover in time after sitting out last week with an ankle problem.

TRENDS:

* Argonauts are 2-12 ATS in their last 14 games overall.

* Argonauts are 0-7 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.

* RedBlacks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

* Over is 6-0 in RedBlacks last 6 home games.

* Over is 5-0 in RedBlacks last 5 games overall.

CONSENSUS: The road dog Argos are getting 52 percent of the action from users and the Under is picking up 51 percent of the totals wagers.

EXTRA POINTS:

* Harris has thrown for 725 yards and five touchdowns through two games.

* Toronto DE Victor Butler leads the CFL with four sacks.

* The Argonauts have won five of the last seven meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-2.5, 51.5)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a battle of winless teams Saturday. The Roughriders have dropped their first two games of the season by a combined four points, including a heartbreaking 43-40 double-overtime loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the first CFL game at the new Mosaic Stadium on Canada Day, and hope to turn their fortunes around by beating Hamilton for only the second time in six meetings.

"We have to play better," Saskatchewan coach Chris Jones told reporters. "We have to find a way to do things the correct way 100 percent of the time and not just some of the time." The Tiger-Cats had a week off to lick their wounds following a disappointing 32-15 setback to the Toronto Argonauts. Many experts considered Hamilton to be the main challenger to the Ottawa Redblacks in the battle for the East Division title but the Tiger-Cats looked anything but contenders as they were held to 232 yards of net offence and surrendered five sacks against the Argonauts. Hamilton has dropped six of its last seven regular-season games dating back to last year, but fared well recently against the Roughriders, winning four of the last five meetings, including a 53-7 thrashing Aug. 20, 2016.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN2

LINE HISTORY: The Roughriders opened as two-point home chalk against the Tiger-Cats and that line was quickly bet up to 2.5, then faded as low as -1 before rebounding back to 2.5 as of Friday night. The total hit the betting board at 53.5 and was bet down to 51, it has since bounced up slightly to 51.5.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U): Terrence Toliver, who caught 65 passes for 1,036 yards and nine touchdowns in 2016, was put on the six-game injured list after suffering a knee injury in the first quarter against Toronto. Hamilton's secondary was torched for 506 passing yards in its opener and will once again be without two defensive backs in all-star Abdul Kanneh and Emanuel Davis, who was placed on the six-game injured list. "We had some guys that had a lot of mental errors and it starts there," Hamilton coach Kent Austin told reporters. "We're looking forward to seeing some improvement going into the second game and we're going to tinker early and find out the most competitive team."

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): Kevin Glenn threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns including a scoring toss to Nic Demski, who finished with seven receptions for 82 yards against Winnipeg. Defensive end Jonathan Newsome, who appeared in all 18 games for Saskatchewan last season, was released Tuesday while linebacker Henoc Muamba could be in line to make his season debut after being taken off the six-game injured list. Tyler Crapigna missed a potential game-winning field goal for the second week in a row, prompting Jones to hold an open kicking competition between Crapigna and Quinn Van Gylswyk at practice this week.

TRENDS:

* Tiger-Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog of 0.5-3.0.

* Roughriders are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite.

* Under is 7-1 in Tiger-Cats last 8 games as an underdog of 0.5-3.0.

* Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

* Tiger-Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The home chalk Roughriders are getting 62 percent of the money line action from users and the Over is picking up 54 percent of the totals wagers.

EXTRA POINTS:

* Saskatchewan is tied for the league lead with four turnovers.

* Hamilton DB Will Hill blocked two kicks in his CFL debut in Week 1.

* The Roughriders are 5-15 under Jones

MLB | Astros vs Blue Jays
Play on: Astros -101 at 5Dimes

#MLB Free Pick
Play: Houston Astros
Rating: 5/10*

We won with the Houston Astros as a premium pick when they put a 12-2 beating on the Toronto Blue Jays Friday night. I predict another Houston win when the teams do battle again Saturday afternoon.

Houston hands the ball to Mike Fiers (5-3, 3.80 ERA) who's coming off four scoreless innings against the Yankees. Fiers has allowed just seven runs on 16 hits in 30 innings over his last five outings and he has posted a 2.57ERA in five day starts on the season.

Marcus Stroman (8-5, 3.42 ERA) will toe the slab for the Jays. He's allowed just two runs in 12 2/3 innings in his last two starts, but I think he'll find it hard to slow down the surging Astros. Note that Stroman has compiled a 4.54 ERA in six day starts this season, and Houston is averaging 6.85 runs per game on the road while the Jays are averaging just 3.95 rpg home at Rogers Centre.

The Astros are 9-2 in Fiers' last 11 road starts and 12-4 in Fiers' last 16 starts during Game 3 of a series.

Play - Boston Red Sox w/Porcello (Game 967).

Edges - Red Sox: Porcello 6-0 last 6 team starts during July… Rays: Cobb 1-5 home career team starts in this series… With the Porcello 5-1 in his last 6 team starts in this park, we recommend a 1* play on Boston. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB | Reds vs Diamondbacks
Play on: Diamondbacks -1½ +120 at 5Dimes

Jack's Free Pick Saturday: Arizona Diamondbacks -1.5 (+120)

The Arizona Diamondbacks are now 33-13 at home this season. They are hitting .283 and scoring 6.0 runs per game at home this year. They'll be up against a Cincinnati Reds team that is 14-29 on the road and allowing opponents to hit .282 and score 5.8 runs per game against them.

I'm confident in backing Taijuan Walker and the Diamondbacks on the Run Line today. Walker has gone 6-3 with a 3.30 ERA and 1.336 WHIP in 13 starts this season. The Diamondbacks have won 10 of his 13 starts this year.

We'll gladly fade Luis Castillo, who has gone 0-1 with a 4.41 ERA and 1.714 WHIP in three starts this season, including 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA and 1.874 WHIP in two road starts.

The Diamondbacks are 8-0 in Walker's eight starts with a total set of 8.5 to 10 this season, outscoring opponents by 3.6 runs per game on average. The Reds are 7-24 in their last 31 road games. Arizona is 5-0 in Walker's last five starts. Bet the Diamondbacks on the Run Line Saturday.
