KEY STAT: Motherwell won three of their four group games in 2016

EXPERT VERDICT: Motherwell were one Premiership side who took last year’s Betfred Cup group stage seriously and a similar approach should see them have too much for Queen’s Park. The Steelmen have been extremely busy in the transfer market and their new arrivals will be keen to advertise their qualities.

RECOMMENDATION: Motherwell

CFL Betting Recap - Week 3

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 3
-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 ATS in Week 3
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 3
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 3
-- The 'Under' went 3-1 in Week 3

Analysis

Favorites and underdogs split for the first time this season, as two out of four favorites ended up cashing after going 0-8 ATS through the first two Canadian weekends. Road teams continue to go strong, going 3-1 SU/ATS. That's now 9-3 ATS through the first three weekends. Last week, we mentioned this was a trend that was all too familiar in the CFL last season, as road teams finished 16-2-2 ATS in the first five weekends of the 2016 regular season.

The 'under' is also hitting at a 66.7 percent clip through the first three weekends, going 8-4 through 12 regular season games. It's a trend we also saw last season, with the 'under' 19-8-1 through the first seven weekends in 2016. Defense reigned surpreme again in Week 3, with only the Hamilton (0-2)-Saskatchewan (1-2) game connecting for the 'over' (52) in a 37-20 win by the Roughriders.

The over has hit in each of Saskatchewan's two home games after an under result on the road in Week 1. Unfortunately for total bettors in Week 4, the Roughriders will be on their bye week. Montreal (1-2) will be in action, however, and they have been a favorite of bettors at the window. The 'under' is a perfect 3-0 so far this season.

Team Betting Notes

-- The Alouettes have dropped two in a row after a win against the Riders in the opening weekend. Montreal's offense has struggled, averaging just 17.3 points per game (PPG) through three outings. In addition, they have managed an 0-2 ATS mark in two home outings. They'll be back at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium in Week 4 when Calgary (2-0-1) comes calling.

-- Speaking of the Stampeders, they're unbeaten through their first three regular season games. After failing to cover in their home-and-home against Ottawa (0-2-1) the Stamps won and covered in Winnipeg (1-1). Their defense was the talk in Week 3, as they allowed 10 points for an 'under' result after yielding 35.0 PPG in the first two games.

-- The TigerCats didn't benefit much from their bye in Week 2, as they returned to action and were roughed up in Saskatchewan by a 37-20 score. The TiCats are 0-2 SU/ATS through the first two weeks, both on the road. They'll return home in Week 4.

-- BC Lions (2-1) will be the first visitor at Tim Hortons Stadium in Hamilton, and the Lions hope the good times continue to roll on the road. They're a perfect 2-0 SU/ATS in stops in Toronto (2-1) and Montreal. Also perfect is the 3-0 'under' record for the Lions, as they're allowing just 20.3 PPG through three outings.

-- The Argonauts pulled off a victory in Canada's capital city, edging the RedBlacks 26-25 in Week 3. Toronto is allowing 22.7 PPG through three games while scoring 24.3 points. That's the reason the 'under' has cashed in all three games with a total set at 54 1/2 or 55 so far.

-- Edmonton (2-0) will return from their bye looking to add to the woes of the RedBlacks at Commonwealth Stadium. So far the Esks are perfect on the season, and so is the 'under' at 2-0. Ottawa's high-octane offense 31.7 PPG will be a huge test for the Edmonton D.

How long can the Under stay hot for CFL bettors?

The season, the Over/Under heading into Week 4 is 4-8 with games averaging just 52.9 points scored per game compared to an average Over/Under line of 54.6. This isn’t a one-season trend either.

The Canadian Football League is known as a pass-happy league with plenty of big plays and high-scoring contests. But that’s not been the case for the first three weeks of the season.

The season, the Over/Under heading into Week 4 is 4-8 with games averaging just 52.9 points scored per game compared to an average Over/Under line of 54.6. This isn’t a one-season trend either. The Under is 40-19-1 (66 percent win rate) in Weeks 1 to 4 in the CFL since 2014.

“I think a big part of it is that teams are getting the early-season rust out,” Greg Sindall, an oddsmaker with Canadian-based sportsbook SportsInteraction.com tells Covers. “Players are figuring out how to play with new teammates, learning each other’s tendencies and strengths. And some teams have new coaches, so the players are learning all the new plays and schemes.

“I expect things will start to even out and we’ll start seeing some higher-scoring games again soon.”

The pattern seems to break by Week 5. The Over/Under mark in Weeks 5 to 20 last season was 35-29 with the total average of points scored per game at 54.4 while the average total was 53.2 over the same period.

It may not be the NFL, but there are football odds hitting the board in Las Vegas this week as the CFL kicks off north of the border. We talk to Johnny Avello of the Wynn Las Vegas about all things CFL betting, including Grey Cup futures and the most bet games for Week 1.

This season, the B.C. Lions, Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes are a combined 0-9 Over/Under heading into Week 4. The Lions and Argos’ Under success can be credited to both teams' ability to stop opponents from putting up big numbers on the scoreboard. The Als, however, are a different story.

The average total points scored in Montreal's three games this season is just 38. It averages only 312 yards per game and just 7.1 yards per pass attempt. Montreal possesses the league’s leading rusher in Tyrell Sutton but he didn’t get his first carry until the second quarter against the Lions last week.

“Let your playmakers make plays. Put the ball in their hands,” Alouettes slotback Nik Lewis told the Montreal Gazette. “If they can’t make the plays, you need new playmakers or something’s got to change.”

This is a perfect example of what Sindall is talking about, with teams still searching for their identity early into the schedule.

CFL Week 4 kicks off Thursday night with the Argos visiting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3, 52.5) while the Alouettes (+5.5) host the Calgary Stampeders on Friday. The total for the Montreal-Calgary game opened at 49.5 but has dropped to 48.5.

Saturday's CFL Betting Preview and Odds: Lions at Tiger-Cats

The BC Lions are 3-point road faves for their Saturday night matchup with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who are searching for their first win, in their first home game of the season.

BC Lions at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (+3, 51.5)

The BC Lions look to conclude their Eastern road swing with their third straight win when they tangle with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday. The Lions came from behind to beat the Toronto Argonauts 28-15 on June 30 before downing the Montreal Alouettes 23-16 in Week 3, to notch their eighth consecutive win against East Division opponents, and they hope to continue their dominance by taming the Tiger-Cats for the fourth straight time.

BC has averaged 37.7 points over the last three meetings with Hamilton and looks for some more offensive fireworks against the Tiger-Cats' mistake-prone secondary. Hamilton is left to pick up the pieces following a disappointing 37-20 setback to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Tiger-Cats have dropped seven of their last eight regular-season games dating back to last year and they hope to find a cure for an ailing offence that has scored just one touchdown over eight quarters while averaging a CFL-low 237 yards per game. "It starts with me so I have to play better and if the quarterback plays better you win more games," Hamilton quarterback Zach Collaros told reporters. "If you're not executing you're not going to win ball games and I don't care what level you're at you're just not going to win."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened the winless Ti-Cats as 3-point underdogs for their first home game of the season and the line has yet to move off that number. However, we have seen movement when it comes to the total. The Over/Under hit the board at 49.5 and has been bet up two points to sit at the current number of 51.5.

WEATHER REPORT: It should be a beautiful night for football in Hamilton, Ontario, with the forecast calling for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to high 20's around kickoff. There will a crossfield wind of around 11 miles per hour and gusting as high as 15 mph.

ABOUT THE LIONS (2-1, 2-1 ATS,0-3 O/U): Linebacker Solomon Elimimian was named one of the CFL's Top Performers of the Week after making 15 tackles in the win against Montreal, which was one shy of equaling the single-game league record set by Reggie Hunt in 2003. "Solomon is a great player and when your best guys come to work everyday then you've got a great situation," BC coach Wally Buono told reporters. "He knows it's his show and he's embraced the role." Running back Jeremiah Johnson accounted for 102 yards and two touchdowns against the Alouettes to extend his TD streak to three games.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (0-2, 0-2 ATS, 1-1 O/U): Defensive back Will Hill was handed a one-game suspension for grabbing an official by the jersey and fined an undisclosed amount for punching an opposing player on the same play during the third quarter of the loss to Saskatchewan. Offensive lineman Mike Filer limped off the field against the Roughriders and did not practice early in the week while linebacker Simoni Lawrence took some reps with the defence after missing a significant portion of last week's loss with a lower-body injury. Defensive back Abdul Kanneh, who was one of Hamilton's high-profile free-agent signings in the offseason, could make his debut after missing the first two games due to injury.

TRENDS:

* Lions are 4-0 ATS in their last four games as a road favorite.
* Tiger-Cats are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six home games.
* Under is 6-2 in Lions last eight road games.
* Under is 6-0 in Tiger-Cats last six games as a home underdog.
* Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.

GAME: New York Yankees (45-42) at Boston Red Sox (51-39)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 15 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Four days after starting the All-Star Game for the American League, Chris Sale will make his first start of the second half of the season Saturday afternoon when he leads the Boston Red Sox into the second of four games with the visiting New York Yankees. Sale went into the break leading the majors in strikeouts (178) while ranking near the top of a number of other major statistical categories.

Included in his phenomenal first half was a 10-strikeout performance over eight innings against the Yankees on April 27, which left him with a 1.31 ERA in 11 career meetings (eight starts) against New York. Sale's first-place club opened a 4 1/2-game lead over the Yankees with a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning in Friday's series opener, handing closer Aroldis Chapman the loss in the latest bullpen disaster for New York, which has lost five straight one-run games. The Yankees have dropped 19 of 26 overall, their deficit in the division matches a season high and they learned Friday that starter Michael Pineda is a candidate for Tommy John surgery. That would put more pressure on pitchers like Luis Severino, who will get the nod opposite Sale on Saturday.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Severino (5-4, 3.54 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Chris Sale (11-4, 2.75)

Severino entered the break on a high note after fanning 10 in seven solid frames against Milwaukee last Saturday. He has 29 strikeouts against three walks over his last three starts and is fourth in the AL (Sale is first) with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.59. The 23-year-old spun seven scoreless innings in a win at Fenway Park on April 26 but is 1-3 with a 4.07 ERA in five career games (four starts) versus Boston.

Sale dropped his first-half finale after giving up four runs in seven innings at Tampa Bay on July 6, although he was electric at times and finished with 12 strikeouts and no walks. The lanky six-time All-Star has won five straight starts at home and has a 2.34 ERA in eight appearances at Fenway Park this year. Former Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is 0-for-9 with seven strikeouts and Brett Gardner is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts against Sale.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston designated 3B Pablo Sandoval for assignment Friday and promoted top prospect 3B Rafael Devers to Triple-A Pawtucket.

2. Boston DH Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer Friday and is batting .365 with four home runs in 12 games since missing three contests due to a knee issue.

3. The teams cap the series with a doubleheader Sunday.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 4, Yankees 2

The Toronto Blue Jays are hoping they can climb back into contention in the second half, and they emerged from the All-Star break with the kind of effort that just might sustain them. The Blue Jays can claim a series win and keep alive a mini-surge when they play the second of three straight games in Detroit against the Tigers on Saturday.

Toronto utilized home runs from Jose Bautista and Steve Pearce as well as an outstanding start by Aaron Sanchez to coast to a 7-2 victory in the series opener, its fifth win in the last seven games. The Tigers have lost three of their last four and left nine runners on base in Friday's setback, which came without second baseman and leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler (flu-like symptoms). Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson had a pair of RBIs and he's driven in seven runs during a five-game hitting streak. Michael Fulmer, whose name has surfaced in recent trade rumors, gets the start Saturday for the Tigers opposite Blue Jays southpaw Francisco Liriano.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, TVA Sports (Toronto), SportsNet (Toronto), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Francisco Liriano (5-4, 5.56 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (9-6, 3.19)

Liriano will be making the 300th major-league appearance (271st start) of his career and seeking his second straight win after topping Houston on July 6. He held the Astros to three runs in six innings for just his fourth quality start of the year. Victor Martinez is 13-for-31 against Liriano, who is 6-10 with a 5.26 ERA in 27 games (20 starts) against Detroit.

Fulmer entered the break tied for the American League lead with 15 quality starts and he has won three straight outings. His most recent triumph came at Cleveland on Sunday, when the 24-year-old yielded three runs (two earned) in six innings of a 5-3 victory. Fulmer held the Blue Jays to two hits in six scoreless innings in his only prior start against them last June.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Blue Jays are 87-56 after the All-Star break over the past two-plus seasons.

2. Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is one RBI shy of tying Hall-of-Famers George Brett and Mike Schmidt (1,595) for 38th on the all-time list.

3. Toronto has won 14 of the last 20 meetings with Detroit.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (43-46) at Pittsburgh Pirates (43-47)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 15 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals find themselves in a sort of purgatory as the non-waiver trading deadline approaches. The final two contests of their three-game series in Pittsburgh this weekend could help determine whether they buy or sell.

Josh Bell’s three-run blast in the ninth inning lifted the Pirates to a 5-2 win in Friday’s series opener, giving Pittsburgh its National League-best third walk-off home run of the season and keeping the Pirates close enough to the fray to consider themselves contenders. Pittsburgh (43-47) has won 17 of its last 29 to get within four games of .500 and is seven games behind National League Central leader Milwaukee with star outfielder Starling Marte due back from suspension Tuesday. The Cardinals (43-46) are in a similar spot, having underachieved in the first half but sitting only 6 1/2 games back. St. Louis may have to reassess its situation following a 10-game road trip that began Friday with the team’s seventh loss when tied entering the ninth inning.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (7-6, 3.61 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (5-2, 2.73)

Lynn allowed seven runs in back-to-back starts in June, including one against the Pirates on June 24, but has been much better in his last three outings. The 30-year-old tossed seven scoreless frames in his final start before the All-Star break, holding the New York Mets to three hits en route to a 6-0 victory. Lynn is 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA in 21 games (19 starts) against the Pirates and has split two meetings this season.

Taillon missed his last start because of food poisoning, so he is set for his first turn since July 4 at Philadelphia. The 25-year-old has recorded consecutive scoreless outings - both wins - and has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. Taillon is 0-0 with a 3.27 ERA in two starts against the Cardinals, including a no-decision in a quality start June 23 at St. Louis.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis rookie 2B/SS Paul DeJong is 13-for-23 with three homers during a seven-game hitting streak.

2. Bell is 11-for-26 during a six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 10 of his past 12 contests.

3. Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty left Friday’s game with a right groin strain.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (44-45) at Baltimore Orioles (42-47)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 15 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Jake Arrieta has discovered the success with the Chicago Cubs that eluded him during a promising but frustrating career with the Baltimore Orioles. The right-hander returns to the mound at Camden Yards on Saturday as the Cubs face the Orioles in the second of a three-game interleague series.

Arrieta never lived up to the hype in Baltimore, going 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA from 2010-13 before being dealt to the Cubs, but he still has strong ties to the club. "There's still several guys over there who I played with who I want to get out," Arrieta told reporters. "It's going to be neat to pitch here against those guys and guys I've played with for a long time and guys I've watched from afar. It's going to be enjoyable. I'm looking forward to it." The Cubs smashed five home runs and led 8-0 before holding on for a 9-8 win in Friday’s opener to remain 5 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the National League Central. The Orioles, who dropped 8 1/2 games behind Boston and into a tie with Toronto for last place in the American League East, are trying to avoid their third straight series loss at home.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ABC 7 (Chicago), WJZ (Baltimore), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (8-7, 4.35 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Wade Miley (4-7, 4.97)

Arrieta is one of a number of Cubs who did not live up to expectations in the first half. The 31-year-old posted just two quality starts in his last six outings before the All-Star break and took the loss last Saturday, giving up four runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh. Arrieta has surrendered 14 home runs in 18 starts after giving up 16 all of last season and 10 in his Cy Young Award campaign in 2015.

Miley won his last start before the break, holding Minnesota to one run over 5 2/3 innings after going 1-4 with an 11.69 ERA in his previous six outings. The 30-year-old hasn’t made it through six innings in his last seven starts dating back to June 1, when he pitched seven innings of one-run ball to beat Boston. Miley is 4-1 with a 3.46 ERA in six starts against the Cubs.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore DH Mark Trumbo hit a tying two-run home run in the eighth inning Friday and is 10-for-32 with two doubles, four homers, and eight RBIs during a season-high nine-game hitting streak.

2. Cubs LF Kyle Schwarber is 5-for-18 with two doubles, two home runs and five strikeouts since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

3. Orioles 3B Manny Machado is 13-for-31 with three doubles and two homers during a season-best seven-game hitting streak, while OF Trey Mancini is 12-for-33 during an eight-game streak.
