CFL Betting Notes - Week 5

Week 4 Recap

Last week in the CFL started on Thursday night with Winnipeg’s 33-25 victory against Toronto as a three-point home favorite. In the first of two Friday games, the home team won again with Montreal stunning Calgary 30-23 as a four-point underdog. Edmonton went on to beat Ottawa 23-21 in the nightcap, but it could not cover the three points at home.

Week 4 wrapped up on Saturday night with British Columbia breaking the streak of home team victories with a convincing 41-26 romp over Hamilton as a 3 ½-point road favorite.

Wednesday, July 19

Montreal Alouettes (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (0-3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Ottawa -3 ½
Total: 50 ½

Game Overview

Montreal continues to be one of the top defensive teams in the CFL this season with a points-allowed average of 21.3 and the fact that it was able to score 30 points in last week’s win is a major step forward for its offense. Prior to that, this unit had failed to score more than 19 points in any of its first three contests. Darian Durant threw for 296 yards against Calgary and the ground game added 143 yards on 26 rushing attempts.

The RedBlacks continue to keep every game they play close, but it still comes down to wins and losses as far as the East Division standings. Trevor Harris deserves a good deal of the credit for keeping Ottawa competitive on offense with 1,379 passing yards and a league-high eight passing touchdowns through his first four games. Ottawa’s defense has been a whole other story with a points-allowed average of 30.8.

Betting Trends

-- The road team has won the last three meetings straight-up and Ottawa has a 6-1 edge against the spread in the last seven games between these two division rivals. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last nine games.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (48-45) at Atlanta Braves (45-47)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 12:10 PM EST
WHERE: SunTrust Park, Cumberland, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Maybe the All-Star break provided the reset the Chicago Cubs needed, as the defending World Series champions look to sweep their second series in a row Wednesday at the Atlanta Braves. The Cubs have won five in a row since the break, the first time since 1993 they have won their first five games after the All-Star break, and catcher Wilson Contreras drove in three runs while second baseman Javier Baez collected three hits in Tuesday’s 5-1 victory.

Chicago (48-45) sits three games above .500 for the first time since June 6 and have matched their season-best winning streak. Atlanta has been unable to muster much offense against the Cubs, scoring only four runs in the first 18 innings of the series. Johan Camargo, who is getting playing time at third base and shortstop, collected two hits to raise his average to .484 in the past 10 games. After a three-game winning streak moved the Braves to .500 for the first time since mid-April, they have lost their past two games.

TV: 12:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (1-6, 4.01 ERA) vs. Braves RH R.A. Dickey (6-5, 4.08)

Montgomery, who earned the save in Game 7 of last year’s World Series, makes his eighth start and 27th overall appearance this season. The 28-year-old is 1-3 with a 5.77 ERA in seven starts since moving into the rotation June 9, giving up four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision Friday at Baltimore. Montgomery, who made his major-league debut for Seattle in 2015, pitched six innings or more in his final three June starts before struggling in both of his July turns.

Dickey has made his early-season struggles a distant memory, establishing himself as one of the National League’s best pitchers in the past month. The 42-year-old has allowed only four earned runs in 33 innings while going 2-0 in his past five outings with 27 strikeouts. Dickey, who started the second half with six innings of one-run, eight-hit pitching Friday against Arizona, is 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 10 home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta’s bullpen has struggled in July, posting a 6.34 ERA with 31 earned runs allowed in 44 innings.

2. Chicago RHP Kyle Hendricks returned to the big-league club after a minor-league rehab assignment as he recovers from tendinitis in his right hand; Hendricks is expected back in the rotation next week.

3. The Braves are expected to activate RHP Arodys Vizcaino (strained right index finger) from the disabled list for the series finale Wednesday.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (31-61) at Miami Marlins (42-50)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 12:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Bright spots have been few and far between for the major league-worst Philadelphia Phillies, although Nick Williams is doing his best to make a favorable impression. The 23-year-old has two homers and eight RBIs during his three straight multi-hit performances heading into the team's rubber match of the three-game series versus the host Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon.

Williams belted a two-run homer to cap Tuesday's 5-2 triumph for the Phillies, who have just three wins in their last 11 games. While Williams has three homers in his last six games, he has a long way to go to be confused with Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton. The 2016 Home Run Derby champion went deep for the third time this series on Tuesday to increase his National League-best total to 29 for the Marlins, who have dropped four of their last five contests. Christian Yelich is 0-for-8 with three strikeouts in this series on the heels of going a blistering 14-for-31 during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 12:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (2-5, 5.63 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (7-4, 3.32)

Pivetta fell to 1-2 in his last four outings on Friday after surrendering a season-high nine runs on seven hits in five innings of a 9-6 setback at Milwaukee. "This is his first go-round in the big leagues," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin told reporters. "He's shown us a lot of promise and I like what he's been doing. (That performance) wasn't his best." The 24-year-old British Columbia native allowed two homers in that contest and nine over his last five outings heading into his first career encounter versus Miami.

While Pivetta will be getting his first look at Miami, Straily has dominated Philadelphia to the tune of a 2-0 mark with an 0.77 ERA in two career starts. The 28-year-old struck out 10 and yielded one earned run in 6 2/3 innings of a 10-2 rout versus the Phillies on May 31. Straily owns a 3-0 record in his last seven outings after receiving a no-decision following a five-inning start versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia 3B Maikel Franco is 11-for-22 with two homers and six RBIs in six meetings this season with Miami.

2. Marlins 2B Dee Gordon is 19-for-57 with 13 runs scored this month.

3. Philadelphia RHP Luis Garcia has allowed batters to hit just .132 against him during his career-best 15 1/3 scoreless innings streak.

GAME: New York Yankees (48-44) at Minnesota Twins (47-46)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

While still in pursuit of first place in the American League East, the New York Yankees attempt to extend their lead in the wild-card race when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon for the rubber match of their three-game series. New York is 3 1/2 games behind Boston for the top spot in the division and owns a 1 1/2-game lead over Minnesota for the second wild card after Tuesday's 6-3 win.

Didi Gregorius went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Aaron Judge broke out of a 1-for-21 funk to start the second half by recording two hits and an RBI as the Yankees improved to 3-3 on their 11-game road trip. New York strengthened its roster for a postseason surge after Tuesday's win, acquiring slugger Todd Frazier and relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle from the Chicago White Sox for four minor leaguers. Minnesota, which trails first-place Cleveland by 1 1/2 games in the AL Central, squandered a 3-1 lead as it lost for the third time in five games since the All-Star break. Jorge Polanco returned to the lineup after being rested for two contests but was unable to break out of his slump as he went 0-for-2 to bring his batting average for the month down to .098.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (6-4, 3.78 ERA) vs. Twins RH Jose Berrios (8-3, 3.70)

Montgomery has failed to last five innings in each of his last two outings but escaped with no-decisions after surrendering five runs and 13 hits over 8 1/3 total frames against Milwaukee and at Boston. The 24-year-old rookie from South Carolina is riding an eight-game unbeaten streak, however, as he has recorded four wins and yielded more than three runs just once during the string. Montgomery, who never has faced Minnesota, has been consistent this year as he's posted a 3.78 ERA in nine road outings and a 3.77 mark in eight turns at home.

Berrios entered the All-Star break having allowed 13 runs over 17 1/3 innings in his three starts prior and began the second half in an even rougher fashion, surrendering seven runs - two earned - in 1 2/3 frames of a loss at Houston on Friday. The 23-year-old Puerto Rican put together a four-start winning streak before his current struggles, giving up two runs in each outing. Berrios, who will be facing New York for the first time, is 4-1 with a 2.86 ERA in five turns at home this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees recalled Luis Cessa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Tuesday's game and optioned fellow RHP Bryan Mitchell to the RailRiders.

2. Minnesota purchased the contract of RHP Bartolo Colon, who made the start on Tuesday, from Triple-A Rochester and activated LHP Craig Breslow (rib cage) from the 10-day disabled list while placing RHP Phil Hughes (thoracic outlet syndrome) on the 60-day DL and optioning DH Kennys Vargas to the Red Wings.

3. New York 1B Greg Bird underwent ankle surgery on Tuesday and could return in September.

GAME: Seattle Mariners (47-48) at Houston Astros (63-31)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros have experienced a superb season thus far but won't see All-Star Carlos Correa on the field again until sometime in September. Marwin Gonzalez again will assume Correa's shortstop position Wednesday for the finale of Houston's three-game series against the visiting Seattle Mariners after the 22-year-old Correa was forecasted to miss six to eight weeks with a torn ligament in his left thumb.

Correa, who is batting .320 with 20 homers and 67 RBIs, suffered the injury during Monday's loss, and an MRI exam on Tuesday determined that surgery was necessary. "At this point of the season, you don't want to get hurt, you want to keep playing," Correa told reporters after the diagnosis. "It's been a fun season so far for this team." Seattle had its five-game winning streak end on Tuesday with a 6-2 loss and will aim to complete a six-game road trip with a 5-1 mark behind the red-hot James Paxton. The Mariners dipped back below .500 with Tuesday's setback and are 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees for the American League's second wild-card spot.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), AT&T Sportsnet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (8-3, 3.19 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (7-3, 4.06)

Paxton has won three consecutive starts, allowing just five runs and nine hits in 19 1/3 innings during the stretch. He struck out nine for the fifth time this season while defeating the Chicago White Sox in his last start, when he gave up two runs and five hits over six frames. The 28-year-old Paxton has pitched 13 scoreless innings against Houston this season - he is 1-0 with six hits allowed - and is 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA in six career starts.

Morton has won back-to-back decisions and six of his last seven. The 33-year-old struck out 10 in five innings while defeating Minnesota in his last turn as he gave up five runs - four earned - and three hits. Morton has faced the Mariners twice this season, going 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA, and has experienced solid success in his career against Jean Segura (5-for-27, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros DH Evan Gattis slugged two homers on Tuesday to raise his season total to 10, becoming the ninth player on the team to reach double digits this season.

2. Seattle 2B Robinson Cano is just 1-for-15 over his last four games as his average has plummeted to .269.

3. Houston RF George Springer, who is 3-for-18 with two homers against Paxton, has recorded three RBIs in the series but is just 1-for-9 over his last three contests.

GAME: San Diego Padres (40-53) at Colorado Rockies (55-41)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 3:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies are recovering from a dismal slide and look to record their fourth consecutive victory when they conclude a three-game series against the visiting San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon. The Rockies have rolled up 31 runs during their mini-streak that follows a 5-15 stretch and sustained their revival with a 9-7 victory over the Padres on Tuesday.

The slumping Carlos Gonzalez emerged from a 4-for-27 funk to go 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Mark Reynolds hit a three-run blast to highlight Tuesday's 11-hit attack. Gerardo Parra continued his hot streak by reaching base five times (three hits, two walks) for the Rockies and is a torrid 16-for-31 with two homers, 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored in eight contests since returning from a quadriceps injury. Colorado sends Jon Gray, who set a franchise record with 16 strikeouts when he last faced the Padres in September, to the mound in search of the sweep. San Diego's Wil Myers homered on Tuesday for his first RBI of the month and is a solid 6-for-15 with one blast against Gray.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (5-9, 4.75 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jon Gray (2-1, 6.23)

Richard is winless in his last five starts, going 0-2 with a 6.18 ERA, but continues to be held in high esteem by Padres manager Andy Green. "He's the unquestioned leader of the team," Green told reporters. "His preparation is second to none for his own craft. He's ready to pitch every five days. He's a tremendous leader, tremendous teammate. He means more to this organization than I think anybody outside could really know." The 33-year-old Richard defeated the Rockies on June 2, when he gave up four runs - three earned - and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings and is 4-4 with a 4.79 ERA in 16 career appearances (15 starts).

Gray was rocked by the New York Mets in his last outing as he gave up eight runs and nine hits in two-plus innings of a loss. The 25-year-old is 2-1 in three games since returning from a foot injury that caused him to miss two-plus months. Gray is 1-0 with a 0.86 ERA in three career starts at Coors Field against the Padres and stands 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 43 innings in seven career outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies CF Charlie Blackmon went 1-for-4 and scored twice Tuesday while extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

2. San Diego placed C Austin Hedges on the 7-day concussion list and recalled RHP Jose Valdez from Triple-A El Paso.

3. Colorado All-Star 3B Nolan Arenado was rested in the middle contest of the series and will be in the lineup for Wednesday's finale.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (51-44) at Oakland Athletics (42-52)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 3:35 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays attempt to build off a comeback victory and complete a three-game sweep when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon. Tampa Bay improved to 4-1 on its six-game road trip Tuesday as it staged a two-out, two-run rally in the ninth inning to post a 4-3 victory.

Adeiny Hechavarria, who is 6-for-15 during his four-game hitting streak, and Shane Peterson delivered back-to-back RBI singles as the Rays maintained their 1 1/2-game edge over the New York Yankees for the top wild-card spot in the American League. Tampa Bay also sits two games behind first-place Boston in the AL East thanks to a stretch during which it has won six of seven contests. After beginning their six-game homestand by sweeping Cleveland, the Athletics look to avoid a similar fate following a pair of one-run defeats. Khris Davis has rediscovered his power stroke, going deep three times during his four-game hitting streak.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Jacob Faria (4-0, 2.00 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (5-4, 3.72)

Faria has begun his major-league career in strong fashion, allowing fewer than three earned runs in six of his first seven starts while working at least six innings in every outing. The 23-year-old Californian has given up one run in each of his four victories, as well as a no-decision on the road against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Faria has been very good at home but even better on the road, posting a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP while registering 27 strikeouts in 26 2/3 frames.

Gray could be making one of his final starts for Oakland, as he may be moved prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The 27-year-old native of Tennessee has been superb over his last four outings, going 3-1 while allowing a total of four earned runs over 27 innings - a span that includes a win over Cleveland on Friday in which he worked six scoreless frames. Gray, who is 2-2 with a 4.07 ERA in eight career starts against the Rays, escaped with a no-decision at Tampa Bay on June 10 after yielding five runs - two earned - in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays C Wilson Ramos (hamstring) returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing three games and went 1-for-4.

2. Oakland OF Rajai Davis is 5-for-10 over the first four games of the team's homestand.

3. Tampa Bay is seven games over .500 for the first time since June 2015.

DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 3:45 PM EST

The San Francisco Giants last won a series at the beginning of the month and they have the opportunity to do so again when they conclude their three-game interleague set against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday afternoon. San Francisco won for just the second time in nine games when it notched a 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Indians on Tuesday to gain a split of the first two contests.

The Giants avoided a four-game slide with Tuesday's win as Eduardo Nunez delivered a walk-off single in the 10th. The victory was only San Francisco's fifth in its last 19 home games in what is en route to becoming just the franchise's second losing campaign in nine seasons. Cleveland has dropped five of its last six games and possesses a 1 1/2-game lead over Minnesota in the American League Central. Jose Ramirez, who ranks third in the AL with a .322 average, is just 1-for-12 over his last three contests.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (10-4, 3.65 ERA) vs. Giants RH Matt Cain (3-8, 5.56)

Carrasco lost to Oakland in his last turn after winning his previous five decisions. He registered 10 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings against the Athletics to reach double digits for the third time in his last five starts and ranks sixth in the AL with 124. The 30-year-old Carrasco is 0-2 with a 3.21 ERA in two career starts versus the Giants despite a solid 0.86 WHIP.

Cain has dropped seven straight decisions since winning on May 15. The 32-year-old gave up five or more runs in four of his last six starts and was sent to the bullpen before returning to the rotation for this outing as Johnny Cueto (blisters) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. Cain is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against the Indians.

GAME: Texas Rangers (45-48) at Baltimore Orioles (44-49)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, July 19 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles are picking themselves off the mat following a weekend beating at the hands of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs. Buoyed by back-to-back quality starts for the first time since June 1-2, the Orioles look to make it three straight wins Wednesday night when they continue their four-game set against the visiting Texas Rangers.

Baltimore's offense also received a welcome jolt from first baseman Chris Davis, who had a grand slam and a two-run shot for a career-high six RBIs in a 12-1 drubbing on Tuesday. Davis had been 1-for-14 in his first four games since returning from the disabled list after missing a month with an oblique injury. Texas' offense is stuck in the mud, pushing across six runs over the past four games while losing three in a row. Shin-Soo Choo and Rougned Odor each had two hits Tuesday after being mired in ruts of 2-for-19 and 0-for-19, respectively.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Martín Pérez (5-6, 4.55 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (5-7, 6.39)

Perez matched his season high with seven innings last time out at Kansas City, earning the victory by allowing three runs and eight hits to improve to 3-0 over his last five starts. Despite the unbeaten streak, the Venezuelan permitted at least four runs in five of his last seven outings and has yielded at least seven hits in all seven. Mark Trumbo is 5-for-12 with a pair of homers and six RBIs versus Perez.

Gausman appeared to be turning a corner with back-to-back wins on June 27 and July 2, giving up only six hits over 12 1/3 innings, only to follow them up with a pair of clunkers. He gave up six runs on nine hits over four innings at Minnesota on July 7 and was tagged for eight runs in three innings by the Cubs on Friday, escaping with a no-decision each time. Shortstop Elvis Andrus is 5-for-12 against Gausman.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore OF Trey Mancini hit his 15th homer Tuesday, ending a 17-game drought without one.

2. Rangers RF Nomar Mazara is 1-for-13 over the past four games.

3. Orioles OF Seth Smith has homered in each of the first two games of the series, extending his hitting streak to five.

PREDICTION: Orioles 6, Rangers 4
