KEY STAT: Siroki have won only one of their last seven matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Aberdeen travel to Bosnia with the tie in the balance after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Pittodrie but they can come good against Siroki Brijeg. Aberdeen have a strong side at this level and last week’s mishap could have been due to ring rust as it was their first game of the season. Now they have blown away a few of the early-season cobwebs, the Dons could march into next round.

RECOMMENDATION: Aberdeen

CFL Betting Notes - Week 5

Week 4 Recap

Last week in the CFL started on Thursday night with Winnipeg’s 33-25 victory against Toronto as a three-point home favorite. In the first of two Friday games, the home team won again with Montreal stunning Calgary 30-23 as a four-point underdog. Edmonton went on to beat Ottawa 23-21 in the nightcap, but it could not cover the three points at home.

Week 4 wrapped up on Saturday night with British Columbia breaking the streak of home team victories with a convincing 41-26 romp over Hamilton as a 3 ½-point road favorite.

Thursday, July 20

Edmonton Eskimos (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -3
Total: 54 ½

Game Overview

Edmonton has forged the early lead in the highly competitive West Division behind a balanced attack on offense and a defense that has done a fairly good job at keeping opposing teams out of the end zone. Led by quarterback Mike Reilly, the Eskimos have averaged 25.3 points per game in their undefeated start. He has completed 71.8 percent of his 103 attempts for 866 yards and four touchdown throws.

The Tiger-Cats are in danger of letting this season slip out of control behind an offense that is averaging just 20.3 PPG complementing a defense that has been burnt for 32 points or more in each of its first three losses. In last week’s double-digit loss to BC, Zach Collaros ended the game with 361 passing yards and 22 more on the ground, but it is pretty obvious that he cannot get it done on his own.

Betting Trends

--Edmonton has won three of the last four meetings SU and it has gone 4-0-1 ATS in its last five road games against the Tiger-Cats. The total has stayed under in all five of those games at Hamilton.

Thursday's CFL betting preview and odds: Eskimos at Tiger-Cats

Mike Reilly threw for 265 yards and a touchdown against Ottawa to move within one TD toss of passing Matt Dunigan for fifth place on Edmonton's all-time list.

Edmonton Eskimos at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (+3, 53)

The Edmonton Eskimos look to remain unbeaten when they travel east to tangle with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Thursday. The Eskimos held off the Ottawa Redblacks 23-21 in Week 4 to notch their third consecutive victory, and hope to take sole possession of first place in the West Division standings by knocking off the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton for the fourth straight time.

Edmonton has won eight consecutive games against East Division opponents, including a 24-21 victory against Hamilton in the 2016 Eastern semifinal, and searches for its first 4-0 start since 2014. The Tiger-Cats are left to pick up the pieces following a 41-26 setback to the BC Lions. Winless Hamilton has dropped nine of its last 10 games overall dating back to last season, and is desperately searching for an identity on offence as the unit sits last in points per game (20.3), passing yards (264) and passing touchdowns (two). "I told the guys it's going to get ugly around them with all the negativity and the chatter right now," Hamilton coach Kent Austin told reporters. "They need to get their rest and keep fluids in them and be ready to prepare physically to play on a short week against another physical football team."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The Eskimos opened as three-point road favorites and that point spread has yet to move. The total hit the betting boards at 54.5 and was bet down to 53 by Wednesday evening. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (3-0 SU, 1-2 ATS, 0-3 O/U): Mike Reilly threw for 265 yards and a touchdown against Ottawa to move within one TD toss of passing Matt Dunigan for fifth place on Edmonton's all-time list. The Eskimos continue to be decimated by injuries at the linebacker position as Adam Konar was helped off the field with a leg injury late in the fourth quarter against the Redblacks and joins Cory Greenwood (ACL) and J.C. Sherritt (Achilles) on the injured list. "We're going to be on our next guy up for that and we've already had two go down at that position," Edmonton coach Jason Maas told reporters. "So we'll have to address it and we'll see who wins that job this week in practice and go forward."

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS,2-1 O/U): Zach Collaros had his best game of the season as he threw for 361 yards with a touchdown toss to Jalen Saunders, who finished with five catches for 147 yards against BC. Richard Leonard continues to be one of the lone bright spots on defence as the first-year safety recorded two interceptions and recovered a fumble against the Lions after returning a blocked kick for a touchdown in the season opener against Toronto. Sergio Castillo, a free-agent signing who won a heated kicking competition in training camp, is 5-for-5 this season after making a season-long 48-yard attempt in Week 4.

TRENDS:

* Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in Week 5.
* Tiger-Cats are 0-6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games.
* Under is 4-0 in Eskimos last 4 Thursday games.
* Under is 7-1 in Tiger-Cats last 8 games as an underdog of 0.5-3.0.
* Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Hamilton.

CONSENSUS: The road favorite Eskimos are getting 63 percent of the action from users and the Over is picking up 52 percent of the totals wagers.

EXTRA POINTS:

* Edmonton has committed the fewest turnovers in the league (two).
* Hamilton has lost seven straight games against West Division opponents.
* The Tiger-Cats have surrendered 1,322 passing yards through their first three games.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (46-48) at New York Mets (42-50)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 20 - 12:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Lance Lynn began an impressive scoreless innings stretch by scattering three hits over seven dominant frames against the New York Mets on July 9. After pushing that total to 13 1/3 innings in his last outing, the right-hander aims to continue his torrid play on Thursday afternoon as the St. Louis Cardinals look to exit Citi Field with a third victory in the finale of the four-game series.

St. Louis was left feeling blue - matching Yoenis Cespedes' new hair color - after the 31-year-old Cuban drove in Asdrubal Cabrera on two occasions in the Mets' 7-3 triumph on Wednesday. Cespedes entered the contest going just 2-for-21 versus the Cardinals this season and hopes his new look gives him confidence versus Lynn, against whom he is 2-for-9 in his career. While the Mets snapped a three-game overall skid and four-game slide versus the Cardinals, the latter fell for the eighth time in 21 contests to slow their charge in the National League Central. Magneuris Sierra continues to feast on major-league pitching since being summoned from Double-A Springfield, slapping a two-run single to highlight a three-hit performance on Wednesday that improved him to 22-for-51 in 13 games with the Cardinals this season.

TV: 12:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (8-6, 3.40 ERA) vs. Mets RH Seth Lugo (4-2, 4.50)

Lynn recorded his second straight scoreless outing and improved to 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA in his last four starts on Saturday after working 6 1/3 innings in a 4-0 victory at Pittsburgh. "I was getting outs with every pitch. When you're moving the ball in and out, changing speeds, good things can happen," the 30-year-old told reporters. Lynn has enjoyed "good things" in his career when facing Lucas Duda (0-for-14, four strikeouts) but has endured a hard time against Jay Bruce (15-for-36, three homers, 11 RBIs).

Lugo picked up his first win of the month on Saturday after yielding three runs over 6 2/3 innings in a 9-3 victory over Colorado, but the night will be remembered for the 27-year-old belting his first career homer. "The jog around the bases was pretty surreal," Lugo told reporters. "I always looked forward to that moment when I was a little kid, you know?" Lugo was coming off a no-decision at St. Louis on July 9 in which he allowed a solo homer by Luke Voit among two hits in three frames of relief.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York SS Jose Reyes has recorded eight multi-hit performances this month.

2. St. Louis 2B Kolten Wong is 6-for-15 with two runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.

3. Cabrera has collected seven hits in his last six contests after recording just one in his previous six.

DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 20 - 12:35 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Arizona Diamondbacks' storybook season has encountered a rough chapter of late, with a horrific twist seemingly averted as recent trade acquisition J.D. Martinez prematurely exited his debut with a left hand contusion. X-rays were negative for Martinez, who is considered day-to-day and could return to the lineup on Thursday afternoon as the Diamondbacks play the rubber match of their three-game series with the host Cincinnati Reds.

David Peralta recorded his second straight three-hit performance in Wednesday's 4-3 loss in 11 innings. The 29-year-old Venezuelan is 8-for-16 with four RBIs and three runs scored versus the Reds this season and carries an eight-game hitting streak into the series finale. While Arizona has dropped nine of 11 to fall one-half game behind surging Colorado for the top wild-card spot in the National League, Cincinnati finally tasted victory for the first time in six games following the All-Star break. Zack Cozart continues to increase his potential trade value as the All-Star shortstop homered for the second straight day to highlight a four-hit performance, improving to 7-for-10 with three RBIs and as many runs scored in the series.

TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Taijuan Walker (6-4, 3.61 ERA) vs. Reds RH Luis Castillo (1-2, 3.41)

Walker saw his winless stretch reach four games on Friday after the bullpen let him down following a two-run, five-hit performance over six innings against Atlanta. The 24-year-old has recorded quality starts in five of his last six outings, with the one exception coming in his last encounter with Cincinnati on July 8. Walker permitted five runs and as many hits - with two homers to boot - in five innings of a 7-0 setback at Chase Field.

Castillo sustained his second loss in three outings on Saturday despite yielding three runs and as many hits in six innings of a 10-7 setback versus Washington. The 24-year-old Dominican didn't help himself by issuing four walks against the Nationals after giving out just one free pass in each of his two previous turns. Castillo looks to bounce back versus Arizona, against which he scattered three hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 superb innings to pick up the win on July 8.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cozart is 9-for-18 with two homers, four RBIs and five runs scored versus Arizona this season.

2. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt is 13-for-42 during his 11-game hitting streak and has hit safely in a career-high 17 consecutive road contests.

3. Cincinnati OF Billy Hamilton is 10-for-24 with five runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (52-45) at Pittsburgh Pirates (47-48)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 20 - 12:35 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a chance to reach the .500 mark for the first time since April 16 when they go for a four-game sweep of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon. The surging Pirates have won a season high-tying four in a row and 10 of 12 to draw within four games of first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central.

Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli had a tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth before rookie Max Moroff delivered the game-winner with a two-out single in the 10th. “This is what makes this game exciting, when you do this type of stuff," said veteran third baseman David Freese while praising the team's youngsters. "We got (Josh) Bell, (Adam) Frazier, Moroff? Awesome. Your hair stands up.” Domingo Santana went 3-for-5 with a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning in Wednesday's 3-2 loss for the Brewers, who have scored nine runs during their four-game slide - one shy of their season high. Milwaukee, which has lost seven of 10 to the Pirates this season, sends Jimmy Nelson to the mound to face Jameson Taillon in the series finale.

TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (8-4, 3.27 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (5-3, 3.06)

Nelson did not factor in the decision last time out against Philadelphia despite allowing two runs on three hits while striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings. He won each of his previous three turns, giving up a combined five earned runs and notching 25 strikeouts over 19 innings. Starling Marte is 8-for-21 against Nelson, who pitched three hitless innings at Pittsburgh on May 5 before rain ended his outing.

Taillon took the loss in his first outing following the All-Star break, permitting four runs on eight hits against St. Louis. He won his previous two starts with 11 1/3 scoreless innings and has yielded only one homer in six appearances since returning from cancer surgery. Taillon was 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in four starts against Milwaukee last year and has been haunted by Hernan Perez (5-for-9, three homers, seven RBIs).

WALK-OFFS

1. Santana is 15-for-36 over his last nine games.

2. Cervelli has hit safely in five straight games and is 7-for-11 in the series.

3. Brewers LF Ryan Braun sat out Wednesday's game due to soreness in his calf and wrist.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (43-51) at Boston Red Sox (54-42)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 20 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After watching his team play 58 innings in a four-day span, Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell was grateful for a stress-free win on the eve of Thursday afternoon's finale of a four-game series versus the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. "The fact that we played that game in under three hours, it felt like we were only at halftime," Farrell told reporters Wednesday.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia collected a pair of hits and three RBIs in Wednesday's 5-1 win as the Red Sox improved to 4-3 on their eight-game homestand to open a three-game lead atop the American League East. Waiver-wire acquisition Doug Fister, a loser of eight straight decisions dating to Aug. 22, 2016, could be pitching to keep his spot his in the rotation as he makes his fourth start of the year. His opponent, Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano, was forced to leave his last start at Detroit due to soreness in his neck but appears on track to start after throwing a bullpen session on Tuesday. Second baseman Darwin Barney is in a 2-for-22 slump for the Blue Jays, who are 2-4 on their 10-game road trip.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Francisco Liriano (5-5, 6.04 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Doug Fister (0-3, 6.75)

Liriano was knocked around for five runs on three hits and four walks in two-plus innings against the Tigers, but told reporters he did not want to skip a start following Tuesday's 25-pitch bullpen session. He held Boston scoreless on four hits over 5 1/3 innings on April 19, but was tagged for five runs on seven hits in six innings by the Red Sox on July 1. Pedroia is 7-for-17 against Liriano.

Fister was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels and made a decent season debut against his former club, taking the loss with six innings of three-run ball. He did not factor in the decision in his following start, allowing a three-run homer among four hits over five innings. Fister then was touched for six runs at Texas in 3 2/3 innings before giving up three runs in relief versus the Yankees.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pedroia has 10 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

2. Blue Jays RHP Mike Bolsinger went on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday due to inflammation in his left knee.

3. Red Sox LF Andrew Benintendi is hitless in his last nine at-bats and 2-for-20 over the past five games.

GAME: Texas Rangers (45-49) at Baltimore Orioles (45-49)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 20 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Cole Hamels had a rocky return in his first start following a stint of nearly two months on the disabled list, but he has quickly re-established himself as the ace of the Texas Rangers. Hamels carries a streak of 21 scoreless innings into Thursday's start as the visiting Rangers attempt to avoid a sweep in the finale of four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Hamels has allowed only a two-run homer over his last three outings, but he is 1-3 with a 4.32 ERA in five career starts against the Orioles. Texas and Baltimore share identical records (45-49) but the teams hardly look in the same league with the Rangers riding a four-game losing streak and getting outscored 25-4 in the series. Jonathan Schoop and Trey Mancini have combined for 10 hits and 11 RBIs in the series for the Orioles, who have scored in double figures in consecutive games for the first time this season. Left-hander Wade Miley will oppose Hamels for Baltimore, which has produced three straight quality starts for the first time since May 19-21 after entering the series with a major league-worst 6.02 ERA from its starting rotation.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Southwest (Texas), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (4-0, 3.05 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Wade Miley (4-8, 5.40)

Hamels is coming off a superb outing at Kansas City, but had to settle for a no-decision despite limiting the Royals to four hits while striking out five over 7 2/3 scoreless innings. He also went 7 2/3 innings in his previous turn versus the Los Angeles Angels, picking up the win after giving up three hits. Mark Trumbo has enjoyed success against Hamels, going 6-for-18 with a pair of home runs.

Miley was rocked by the Chicago Cubs in his first start after the break, giving up seven runs on nine hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings. He is 1-4 over his last five outings, the lone win coming at Minnesota on July 8 when he permitted one run on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Jonathan Lucroy is 5-for-13 and Elvis Andrus 6-for-17 against Miley, who has yielded 39 runs in his last eight starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre, who is 17 hits shy of 3,000, moved into 16th place on the major league's all-time list with his 602nd double.

2. Orioles CF Adam Jones is 5-for-9 with a homer, two RBIs and five runs scored in the past two games.

3. Texas is 4-for-31 with runners in scoring position over the past eight games.

GAME: Detroit Tigers (43-50) at Kansas City Royals (46-47)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 20 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Michael Fulmer began his four-start winning streak by falling one out shy of a complete game versus the Kansas City Royals last month. The 2016 American League Rookie of the Year looks to continue his winning ways at the expense of the Royals on Thursday as the Detroit Tigers aim to exit Kauffman Stadium with a third victory in the finale of the four-game series.

The Tigers erupted for 19 runs in the first two contests of the series and 36 during their season high-tying four-game winning streak before seeing their offense go limp until Mikie Mahtook's two-run homer in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 4-3 setback. Justin Upton registered his fourth multi-hit performance in six games and looks to continue his success versus Danny Duffy, against whom he is 4-for-11 with two homers in his career. While Detroit failed to continue its recent momentum, Kansas City posted just its second win in nine overall contests and third in nine encounters with the Tigers this season to move within two games of AL Central-leading Cleveland. Mike Moustakas ripped a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning on Wednesday to give him three hits in his last two games, matching the total he accumulated over his previous five contests.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (10-6, 3.06 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (5-6, 3.51)

Fulmer improved to 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in his last four outings on Saturday after allowing one run and only two hits in eight innings of an 11-1 rout versus Toronto. The 24-year-old struck out just three in that contest, but that's of little concern considering his pitch count stayed low as he worked at least eight frames for the third time in four contests. "I'm worried about getting outs, and strikeouts mean more pitches," Fulmer told reporters. "There are times when you want to try to strike a guy out, but I'm happy with a weak grounder to short."

Duffy sustained his second straight loss and third in four outings on Saturday despite yielding one run and five hits in 8 1/3 innings of a 1-0 setback versus Texas. The lone run came in the ninth after the 28-year-old allowed a leadoff single by Jonathan Lucroy and, eventually, a game-winning base hit by Shin-Soo Choo. In addition to Upton, Duffy has struggled with Nicholas Castellanos (7-for-21) and Victor Martinez (12-for-35, three homers).

WALK-OFFS

1. Kansas City 2B Whit Merrifield has recorded five doubles and scored three runs during his six-game hitting streak.

2. Detroit 2B Ian Kinsler has registered six hits in the series and is riding a five-game run-scoring streak.

3. Royals C Salvador Perez has hit safely in each contest of this series after going 0-for-9 with three strikeouts in his previous three games.

PREDICTION: Tigers 3, Royals 2
