Preview: Braves at Phillies

Gracenote

Jul 30, 2017

The Atlanta Braves are happy to wrap up a four-game series at the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, given how they have struggled against the team with the fewest victories in the majors. The Phillies made it three wins in a row in the series Sunday by earning a 2-1 victory and, while Philadelphia is 38-64 on the season, it has defeated Atlanta eight times in 10 tries in 2017.

The Phillies are playing their best baseball of the season, averaging 5.8 runs per game in the past 11 contests, and getting Freddy Galvis’ walk-off single to right Sunday one night after Ty Kelly game-winning single in the 11th. The Braves, who conclude a three-city, 11-game road trip Monday, have stranded 29 runners through the first three games of the series. Atlanta dropped to 1-7 in its past eight games and the offense is anemic, averaging just 3.3 runs per game in that stretch while scoring more than three runs twice. The Braves are 3-10 in their past 13 games at Philadelphia dating back to May 2016, with four losses there this season coming by one run.

TV: 12:35 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 3.82 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (3-6, 5.73)

Foltynewicz has established himself as Atlanta’s ace in his third season with the Braves, matching his career high in wins while shaving nearly one-half run off his ERA from a season ago. Since the start of June the 25-year-old is 6-0 with a 3.33 ERA in 10 starts, surrendering two runs or fewer seven times as the Braves are 9-1 in those outings. Foltynewicz struck out nine in six innings as Atlanta beat Arizona on Tuesday.

Pivetta earned his first major-league victory against Atlanta in his fifth career start, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings on June 5. But the 24-year-old rookie has struggled at times since, giving up 11 homers in 51 innings while posting a 6.00 ERA. He surrendered five runs on six hits in six innings of a loss to Houston on Tuesday, striking out seven while issuing only one walk.

WALK-OFFS

1. Phillies CF Odubel Herrera added two more hits Sunday, boosting his average against the Braves this season to .415 with three homers in 10 games.

2. Atlanta RF Nick Markakis moved within three hits of 2,000 for his career by going 2-for-3 Sunday.

3. Braves closer RHP Jim Johnson, who surrendered Herrera’s game-tying shot in the ninth Saturday for his eighth blown save of the season, was used in the eighth inning Sunday.

Preview: Tigers at Yankees

Gracenote

Jul 30, 2017

The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees will approach Monday's non-waiver trade deadline from very different directions just ahead of their opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Tigers have won two straight but they are nine games under .500 and potentially looking to sell off some pieces, while the Yankees have already made two significant trades and remain in the mix for Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray.

New York had won six in a row before dropping the finale of a four-game set with Tampa Bay by a 5-3 margin Sunday. Ronald Torreyes drove in all three runs for the Yankees as the top seven hitters in the lineup went a combined 2-for-25 - including an 0-for-4 effort by All-Star Aaron Judge, who is hitting .158 since the All-Star break and fouled out with two on in the bottom of the ninth Sunday. Detroit had no such issues getting production up and down the lineup in a 13-1 rout of the Houston Astros on Sunday, as Justin Upton homered and drove in six runs to pace a 15-hit attack. The series opener presents an intriguing matchup of young standouts on the mound, with Detroit's Michael Fulmer - himself a central figure in trade rumors last week - opposite New York's Luis Severino.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (10-8, 3.35 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (7-4, 3.03)

Fulmer rebounded from his shortest start of the year, a rocky 2 2/3-inning outing at Kansas City, to toss eight solid frames against the very same Royals his last time out. It was the fourth time in a span of six starts in which he finished at least eight innings, and the 24-year-old has 24 strikeouts against four walks in that span. He tossed six scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium last year in his only previous matchup with New York.

As the Yankees look to fortify their rotation from the outside, Severino continues to provide ace-like performances while going 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA over his last four starts. The 23-year-old has thrown an average of 107 pitches in that stretch while finishing exactly seven innings each time. He dropped his only start against the Tigers last year, allowing three runs and 10 hits in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York DH Matt Holliday made the last out Sunday and is batting .136 since returning from the disabled list earlier this month.

2. Tigers C James McCann had three hits Sunday and is batting .452 during a nine-game hitting streak.

3. The Yankees acquired LHP Jaime Garcia on Sunday in exchange for two minor leaguers.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (38-39) at Baltimore Orioles (39-39)

Preview: Royals at Orioles

Gracenote

Jul 30, 2017

The Kansas City Royals are charging toward the top of the American League Central and are finally getting some offensive contributions from a pair of former All-Stars who spent the first half of the season mired in deep slumps. Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar will try to stay hot when the Royals continue their nine-game road trip by visiting the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.

The Royals are winners of 10 of their last 11 to pull within two games of the Cleveland Indians for first place in the Central and got key hits in the eighth inning of Sunday's 5-3 win at Boston from Gordon and Escobar, who combined to drive in four runs in the go-ahead rally. "We just kept grinding, just keep grinding the at-bats. It's just kind of typical of our success. The big guys are getting on base, and (Escobar) and Gordon, who struggled so much at the beginning of the year, come up with huge hits." The Orioles (50-54) are coming off a series victory at Texas and won eight of their last 13 games to draw within four games of .500. Baltimore will try to slow the Kansas City offense with veteran Ubaldo Jimenez while the Royals counter with lefty Danny Duffy.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, MASN 2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-6, 3.56 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (4-7, 6.93)

Duffy is coming off a strong start at Detroit on Tuesday, when he allowed one run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out four. The 28-year-old has surrendered two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last 10 turns and issued a total of one walk in his last four outings. Duffy was solid at home against Baltimore on May 12 but did not factor in the decision while yielding two runs in seven frames.

Jimenez struck out a season-high nine in six innings at Tampa Bay on Wednesday but still ended up with the loss despite allowing just two runs on three hits. The Dominican Republic native fared much worse in his two previous starts, when he was lit up for a combined 12 runs and 21 hits in nine innings. Jimenez is seeing the Royals for the first time this season and earned a win over Kansas City at home in 2016.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles DH Mark Trumbo (back) was scratched from the lineup on Sunday and is day-to-day.

2. Royals CF Lorenzo Cain is 9-for-19 with seven runs scored in his last four games.

3. Kansas City acquired OF Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday in exchange for a pair of prospects and optioned OF Terrance Gore to Triple-A Omaha to make room on the active roster.

Preview: Indians at Red Sox

Gracenote

Jul 30, 2017

The Boston Red Sox have the misfortune of playing the two hottest teams in the American League in back-to-back series and did not fare so well in the first. The Red Sox, who needed extra innings to avoid a sweep at home in a three-game series against Kansas City over the weekend, will welcome the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians for the start of a three-game set on Monday.

The Indians had a nine-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss at the Chicago White Sox on Sunday but got another strong start, this time from right-hander Josh Tomlin, who took a no-hitter through four innings before being removed due to hamstring tightness. Cleveland's starters have posted 2.97 ERA in the last 10 games to help the team maintain a two-game edge over the Royals in the Central. The lone dud in that span from the Indians' rotation came from Mike Clevinger, who will try to redeem himself when he goes up against Boston veteran Doug Fister on Monday. The Red Sox managed to snap Kansas City's nine-game winning streak with an extra-innings triumph on Saturday but watched a lead evaporate in the late innings on Sunday and enter the week one-half game behind the New York Yankees in the AL East.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Mike Clevinger (5-3, 3.20 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Doug Fister (0-5, 7.46)

Clevinger was lit up for six runs - five earned - on nine hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday but escaped a loss when the offense exploded in an 11-7 win. The Florida native allowed a total of two earned runs and 10 hits in 24 innings over his previous four turns. Clevinger is making his first career appearance against the Red Sox and is 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Fister is returning to the rotation to take the spot of David Price, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with elbow soreness last week. The Fresno State product failed to complete five innings in any of his last three starts and was bounced from the rotation after surrendering six runs on seven hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings against Toronto on July 20. Fister has plenty of experience against Cleveland from his time with Detroit in the AL Central and is 5-4 with a 3.13 ERA in 16 career starts against the Indians.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (hamstring) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus on Sunday but there is still no firm timetable for his return.

2. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

3. Cleveland SS Francisco Lindor hit safely in each of the last 10 games.

Preview: Nationals at Marlins

Gracenote

Jul 31, 2017

The Washington Nationals own the best road record in the National League and have done particularly well away from home since the All-Star break. The Nationals vie for their ninth victory in 11 games outside of Washington on Monday, when they begin a three-game series against the Miami Marlins.

The NL East-leading Nationals swept a four-game set in Cincinnati to begin the second half of the season and split a pair in Los Angeles against the Angels before winning two of three at Arizona from July 21-23 to improve to 33-19 on the road. Washington is coming off a 3-3 homestand and narrowly avoided a three-game sweep over the weekend against Colorado, getting homers from Adam Lind and Brian Goodwin to back a strong seven-inning effort from Edwin Jackson in the second game of a split doubleheader. Since dropping five of its first six following the Midsummer Classic, Miami has won seven of 10 and claimed each of its last three series. The Marlins fell short of setting a season high with a fifth straight victory Sunday, however, losing 6-4 to Cincinnati.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (8-5, 2.81 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (9-4, 4.04)

Gonzalez struggled early but cruised thereafter in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Wednesday, yielding two runs and five hits while striking out eight over seven innings. The two-time All-Star has given up four of his six runs over the last two outings in the opening frame, and he has been much more fortunate on the road (7-3, 3.50 ERA) than at home (1-2, 2.02). Christian Yelich (6-for-19) has fared well against Gonzalez, who is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts versus the Marlins this season and 7-3, 2.09 in 13 career turns.

Urena improved to 8-2 in his last 10 decisions on Wednesday due in large part to Miami's offensive effort in Texas, riding the wave of a team-record 22 runs to victory despite surrendering five runs in as many innings. The 25-year-old Dominican has logged only one quality start in five turns this month and was tagged for five runs by the Los Angeles Dodgers at home on July 15. Urena has yet to face the Nationals this season but posted a 1-0 record and 1.80 ERA in three relief appearances against them last year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Prior to taking three of four from Cincinnati over the weekend, the Marlins had dropped four consecutive series at home since capturing two of three against Washington from June 19-21.

2. Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon is batting .383 since June 15.

3. Miami OF Marcell Ozuna has driven in a National League-high 27 runs in July - the most RBIs he has recorded in any month in his career.

Preview: Mariners at Rangers

Gracenote

Jul 31, 2017

Even though Adrian Beltre is having a homestand he is sure to remember for a long time, his Texas Rangers are having one they would just as soon forget. One day after becoming the 31st player in major-league history to reach 3,000 hits, the four-time All-Star third baseman looks to remain locked in at the plate when the Rangers host the opener of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Beltre went 1-for-5 with a double - the 605th of his career, tying Paul Molitor for 14th place in major-league history - in Sunday's 10-6 loss to Baltimore to tie Roberto Clemente for 30th place on the all-time hits list, helping him improve to 11-for-23 two-thirds of the way through Texas' nine-game homestand. However, the Rangers have dropped two of three to both Miami and the Orioles, getting shut out in two of the losses and giving up a total of 32 runs in the other two defeats. The Mariners won four of their final six contests to conclude a 5-5 homestand, posting a 9-1 triumph over the New York Mets on Sunday to claim their second straight series and get back to .500 for the season (53-53). Nelson Cruz belted a three-run homer Sunday to give him an American League-best 79 RBIs - three more than Baltimore's Jonathan Schoop.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (5-4, 4.08 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Cole Hamels (5-1, 3.97)

Fernandez escaped with a no-decision Tuesday against Boston in one of his worst efforts since April, as he yielded four runs over 5 2/3 innings. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner is 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA in seven turns since returning from a two-month stint on the disabled list due to shoulder bursitis and has worked at least six frames five times in that span. Beltre is 12-for-51 versus Hernandez, who defeated Texas on April 14 after giving up ust one run in 7 1/3 innings.

Hamels remained unbeaten at home despite an uneven performance Tuesday against Miami, giving up four runs in six frames - one start after surrendering seven in 5 1/3 innings of a loss at Baltimore. The four-time All-Star has been provided at least five runs of support in 10 of his 11 outings this season and is 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA at Rangers Ballpark. Hamels settled for a no-decision April 16 at Seattle, permitting four runs - three earned - while lasting only five innings for his second-shortest start of 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Beltre is one of only three players in league history who primarily is a third baseman - and the first Dominican at any position - to reach 3,000 hits, joining Hall-of-Famers George Brett and Wade Boggs.

2. Seattle is 6-3 this season against the Rangers but dropped two of three in Texas from June 16-18.

3. Cruz is 11-for-61 with four homers, nine RBIs and 24 strikeouts since the All-Star break.

Preview: Rays at Astros

Gracenote

Jul 30, 2017

The American League-best Houston Astros hope to snap out of a bit of a funk on the mound when they host the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday for the opener of their four-game series. The Astros have dropped three of their last four contests after getting thumped 13-1 by Detroit on Sunday and given up a total of 32 runs in that stretch, which could push them toward picking up another starting pitcher before Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline.

Lance McCullers Jr. gave up five runs on Sunday and the bullpen was pounded for eight more over three innings as Houston was shut out until Alex Bregman belted a solo homer in the ninth. Charlie Morton will try to turn things around on the mound for the Astros, who lead the AL West by 16 games, and will be opposed by one of the league’s hottest pitchers in Alex Cobb. The Rays salvaged the finale of their four-game road series against the New York Yankees with a 5-3 victory on Sunday and the newly acquired Lucas Duda recorded a single, giving him a hit in each of his first three contests with Tampa Bay (3-for-7, two homers). The Rays have won just three of their last 11 contests and trail the first-place Yankees by 3 ½ games in the AL East while sitting 2 ½ behind Kansas City for the second wild card.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Alex Cobb (9-6, 3.46 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (8-4, 3.83)

Cobb has gone 3-0 in his last four starts after allowing five runs and 17 hits over 30 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old Bostonian has served up six home runs over his last five turns and 16 in 21 overall starts but has issued just 34 walks in 138 frames. Brian McCann is 8-for-15 with a pair of homers versus Cobb, who lost to the Astros after yielding four runs over six innings on April 21 to fall to 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA in two career outings against them.

Morton continued to put together what could be his best season in the majors after limiting Philadelphia to three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings last time out. The 33-year-old native of New Jersey has completed six frames in just half of his 14 starts but has registered 92 strikeouts over 82 1/3 innings, including 24 in the last three turns. Corey Dickerson is 5-for-12 with a homer against Morton, who gave up five runs over five innings in a loss at Tampa Bay on April 22.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston 2B Jose Altuve has hit safely in 20 of his last 21 games, batting .500 during that stretch.

2. Tampa Bay 1B Logan Morrison (heel) did not start the team's last three contests but could be back in the lineup Monday.

3. The Astros placed RHP Will Harris (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled LHP Reymin Guduan from Triple-A Fresno.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (37-41) at Chicago White Sox (34-44)

Preview: Blue Jays at White Sox

Gracenote

Jul 31, 2017

The Chicago White Sox continue to remake their roster in hopes of competing in the near future and enter trade deadline day with few veterans remaining on the roster. The Toronto Blue Jays, who visit the White Sox for the opener of a three-game series on Monday, expected to contend this season but instead enter deadline day in last place in the American League East.

The Blue Jays are close enough to wild-card contention that they are not big sellers in advance of the deadline, and the team earned a momentum-swinging win on Sunday when Steve Pearce capped a seven-run rally in the ninth inning by belting his second walk-off grand slam of the week in an 11-10 over the Los Angeles Angels. "You've got to go up there and attack that at-bat," Pearce told reporters. "I went up there and just looked for my pitch. (Angels closer Bud Norris) missed a couple pitches pretty bad early, so I was able to sit on my pitch and unload on it." The White Sox own the worst record in the AL at 40-62 but are set up well for the future after trades in the last year sent away players like Chris Sale, Adam Eaton, Jose Quintana, Melky Cabrera, Todd Frazier and David Robertson and brought back top prospects. Chicago will send one of its last remaining veterans to the mound on Monday, when James Shields opposes Blue Jays righty Marco Estrada.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, TVA Sports (Toronto), Sportsnet (Toronto), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (4-7, 5.43 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (2-3, 5.86)

Estrada is looking for his first win since May 27 and completed six innings just once in his last 10 outings. The California native was solid against Oakland on Wednesday but struggled a bit with his control and walked four while allowing two runs and three hits in five innings. Estrada is seeing Chicago for the first time this season and faced the White Sox once in 2016, taking the loss after yielding three runs in 6 2/3 innings at home on April 27.

Shields is 0-2 in four starts this month and failed to log a quality start in any of those turns while yielding a total of 21 runs - 19 earned - in 19 innings. The 35-year-old has surrendered a total of 43 homers in 165 innings since joining Chicago in a trade from San Diego last season. Shields yielded one home run in a no-decision at Toronto on June 18 while being charged with three runs over 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox DH Matt Davidson homered in two of the last three games, bringing his season total to 21.

2. Toronto 1B Justin Smoak is 7-for-19 with two home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored in the last five games.

3. Chicago OF Leury Garcia (finger) came off the 10-day disabled list on Sunday and homered.

Preview: Giants at Athletics

Gracenote

Jul 31, 2017

The San Francisco Giants are preparing to face Sonny Gray when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Monday for the opener of the Bay Bridge Series but may wind up seeing a different pitcher come game-time. Gray has been the subject of trade rumors over the last several days and still could be moved prior to Monday's non-waiver deadline at 4 p.m. ET.

Oakland pushed Gray's start back a day in order to give the team more time to potentially work out a deal and edged Minnesota 6-5 in 12 innings on Sunday for its second straight win following a five-game losing streak. The Athletics fell behind 5-0 before All-Star Yonder Alonso began the comeback in the fourth inning with an RBI double and ended it with a one-out solo homer - the second walk-off blast of his career. San Francisco continues its five-game road trip after being on the wrong side of a three-game sweep in its weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants squandered one-run leads in both the ninth and 11th innings Sunday en route to a 3-2 setback as Gorkys Hernandez recorded one of the team's nine singles to improve to 6-for-14 during his four-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Matt Cain (3-9, 5.45 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (6-5, 3.43)

Cain has gone 2 1/2 months without recording a victory, suffering eight losses in 12 games (11 starts) since defeating the Dodgers on May 15. The 32-year-old Alabama native lasted only four innings against Pittsburgh last Monday, when he surrendered six runs - two earned - and six hits en route to a loss. Cain has posted an impressive 2.34 ERA in 12 career appearances (11 starts) against Oakland but sports just a 4-5 record.

Gray is 4-2 with a 1.37 ERA over his last six starts, allowing fewer than three earned runs in each outing. The 27-year-old Vanderbilt product struck out nine but was saddled with the loss at Toronto on Tuesday after yielding four unearned runs in six innings. Gray has given up three runs and 11 hits while recording 15 strikeouts and only three walks over 13 frames in winning both of his previous career turns against San Francisco.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Athletics released RHP John Axford on Sunday - three days after the 2011 National League saves leader was designated for assignment.

2. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt (wrist) returned from a two-game absence Sunday and went 0-for-2 with two walks.

3. Oakland optioned Frankie Montas, who went 1-1 with a 7.03 ERA in 23 relief appearances, to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday as fellow RHP Jharel Cotton was activated from the 10-day disabled list to make what proved to be an ineffective start against Minnesota.
