[h=3]2. Welder's glass rated shade-12 or higher[/h]

Welder's glass is designed to protect the eyes of workers from bright bursts of light that acetylene torches give off. This is also what makes it great to look at the sun: It blocks most ultraviolet light.
However, the glass has to be dark enough to be effective. NASA recommends shades 12, 13, or 14, with shade 12 being the least-opaque of the three grades. "Many people find the Sun too bright even in a Shade 12 filter, and some find the Sun too dim in a Shade 14 filter — but Shade 13 filters are uncommon and can be hard to find," NASA wrote at its eclipse safety website.
The space agency also urges extra caution if you find and want to use an older welder's helmet or glass. "If it's less than 12 (and it probably is), don't even think about using it to look at the Sun," it said.

Can someone dumb this down for me? So I keep reading you cannot look at the eclipse with out the special glasses. Even if I am not looking up at the sun, I will still know it's dark for 2 minutes I would think. What is the need to look "up" for?

I live in Broward County Florida and the first day of school is this monday. We were told that if the kids miss school, then it can be an excused absence.

I have friends on facebook (i live in a nice area) that are spending $$$ buying these sunglasses and all that.

I'm just going to tell my kids "dont look up at the sun". Plain and simple

For the first time since 1979, a total eclipse of the Sun is coming to the continental United States, and for the first time since 1918, it is crossing the country from coast to coast.

Bonnie Tyler will perform 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' during total solar eclipse

aboard the Royal Caribbean's Total Eclipse Cruise, the event will include another once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon when they hear singer Bonnie Tyler perform her '80s power ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart" live.

"It’s going to be so exciting," Tyler, 66, told Time magazine. "It doesn't happen very often, does it?"

The Welsh singer-songwriter, who topped the Billboard pop charts with the song in 1983, is a special guest on the weeklong cruise, which departs from Orlando, Florida, for the Caribbean on Aug. 20.

I think we're getting about 90 seconds of totality. I'm going to check it out.

Nature provides a means to view the eclipse via Pinhole Projection.

The numerous small gaps between the leaves of trees and even the holes in the leaves themselves act as small pinhole projectors:

Have a room in Chattanooga, TN then going Dayton or Athens which ever road has less traffic. Dayton is on Route 27 about 39 miles outside of Chattanooga. It should have less traffic Monday morning because 27 isn't accessible to as many Interstates. Route 75 on the other hand connects with Atlanta and Knoxville. I am hoping that 27 isn't total gridlock Monday morning. If it is I am throwing away a lot of money. It's surprising that there are so many rooms available in Chattanooga on Sunday and Monday it could be a good sign. What's weird is there are other cities 40 miles away from where you can view the Eclipse around the country and they are all sold out. Naturally every hotel and motel room in Dayton is sold out and same goes for Athens. I also have a room reserved in Chesterfield, Mo which has 1:30 of totality. It comes down do I want to drive nearly a 1000 miles to St Louis or 750 miles to Chattanooga. Right now the weather favors Athens over Chesterfield. The advantage in Missouri is I don't have to drive if I'm willing to live with 1:30. Traffic would be no issue. I hope I'm not making a mistake. No one really knows how bad Chattanooga traffic will be. I know that Nashville is 100% sold out and has been for months. They have heavily advertised. They want to make it a Jack Daniels and music fest with the Eclipse. Dayton is a Bible Belt town with a church on every corner. Maybe that will hold down the crowd.
