The Boston Celtics have acquired All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers for point guard Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic and Brooklyn's 2018 unprotected first-round pick, the team announced Tuesday night.

"Kyrie is one of the best scorers in the NBA. He has proven that on the biggest stage, the NBA Finals, the last three years," said Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge. "He's been an NBA Champion, an Olympic Gold Medalist, and a four-time All-Star. For all he's accomplished, we think his best years are ahead of him."

Irving, 25, requested a trade during a July meeting with Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Irving has said that he wants to play in a situation where he can be more of a focal point and that he no longer wants to play alongside LeBron James, sources said.

Irving has three years and $60 million left on his contract, but he can opt out of the final year before the 2019-20 season.

Thomas, 28, led the Celtics to the best record in the Eastern Conference, averaging 28.9 points and 5.9 assists over 33.8 minutes per game during the regular season.

He will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of June. He has said he believes he's worthy of a maximum contract.
Thomas had been bracing for the possibility of a trade on Tuesday, league sources said.

"Isaiah embodied what it meant to be a Celtic. He captured fans' hearts not only with his spirit, but his personality," said Ainge. "Jae's toughness was contagious for our team. He improved his skills each year, but it's his energy and fight that will be remembered. We wish them and their families the very best."

Thomas has spent the offseason recovering from a right hip injury that kept him out of the final three games of the Eastern Conference finals. He opted not to have surgery.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Monday that he was not sure Thomas would be ready for the start of training camp, but that further medical tests in September would determine that timeline.

Crowder has been a core piece of the Celtics resurgence. He's a solid perimeter defender who averaged 13.9 points and 5.8 rebounds last season.
"Isaiah and Jae have been a huge part of our success," said Celtics co-owner and governing partner Wyc Grousbeck. "Isaiah's playoff performance under very difficult circumstances will live on in history, and we wish them all the best."

Irving was the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft. Thomas was the last.

The trade will make for an interesting opener for both teams. The Celtics and Cavaliers open the season in Cleveland on Oct. 17.

Wow, I love IT and Brooklyn's 2018 pick is going to be top 3, but Kyrie is a very young superstar, the type if player you need to win championships

They will be the beast of the east soon enough

Ainge may be the best GM in the game

I think Cleveland did good in this trade. Heck Chicago would have done this trade for Butler......Butler is better than Kyrie. Word on the street was Ainge would not part with the draft pick for Butler.

Good for the Timberwolves because they were able to get Butler.

I think the other big thing that will hurt Boston is Crawford's defense. Everyone cant have the ball and score.....but you need players that are willing to play defense. I can go to every great team and they had at least a couple guys that play hard nose defense. That may be harder for them to replace.

I think Cleveland got stronger in the deal at least short term.

Kyrie is 25, Butler is 28 and Celts are trying to build for the future as much as they are for today. Big difference in age when you consider for the rest of Butler's prime GS will still be around.

Celts just drafted 2 wing players in the top 3 and paid another 30 million as well. So they have a glut of guys that play Butler's position.

At first I was just surprised with how much they had to give up but it's a really good deal for them. There are so many bad teams in the East this upcoming year that that BK pick might not even be top 3, it might be in the 6-8 range instead.

Cle did well too though, they were basically on life support with Kyrie wanting out and it looking like LeBron might as well. Atleast now they have some flexibility to make things happen.

Yeah patsfan you are right about Nets. Forgot they made some good additions. But it will be a lottery pick. And if it's a lottery pick....it comes down to odds. So that pick could still be the #2,#3 pick even if Nets have the 6th, 7th worst record in the league.

Put your boy Lebron back in the finals.....this time with a different cast.

Isiah thomas is not anymore of a liability vs golden st than Kevin Love is vs them. He can't guard anyone on that team. Hopefully they trade him next but probably not.

Because look at how the Lakers got Ball. Lol. So rigged. Sixers would have gotten their pick if lakers didn't finish in top 3 for the lottery. So you got to think NBA was behind that shit. You can get rigged ping pong balls. Look at FIFA/Champions League. If they want to make Lebron stay in Cleveland longer....they probably will hook them up with a top 4 pick for sure.

Gotta agree.

If the NBA had nothing to hide regarding their lottery, they would perform the drawing of balls & draft order publicly.

No other way to put it.

They are hiding something each & every year.

Still I have a lot of respect for commish Adam Silver & the league because they are not living in the past & in support of legalized sports betting...

Yeah I like adam silver some as well. He's up to date.

I think they used to do the lottery in public and people still said it was rigged so they were like fuck it. Champions League does it live in front of people. But there is some way they rig it even it is shown public. Those balls are not regular ping pong lottery balls. Sepp Blatter actually admitted the European draws have been fixed in the past.

So really when you think about it LeBron is sticking it to Cleveland in two ways.

He is probably going to leave the Cavs next year anyhow, but before he goes he decided to also run Kyrie out of town...

I think Kyrie just did the Cavs a big favor.

The Cavs will be better next year with Thomas and Crowder. Zizic is a wild card. Can only help. And that #1 pick could be YUGE.

And LeBron may be happy again.

Thomas will make them forget sourpuss Kyrie real quick.

</aside>The Celtics have won 15 straight games and have done it with defense. During the streak, they've allowed All-Stars from last season to combine for a 14.7 player efficiency rating, which is worse than the average NBA player (15.0). Perhaps even more remarkable: Saturday was the first of eight straight games in which the Celtics don't face any All-Star from last season, the second-longest stretch by any team this season. Boston has a chance to keep its run rolling. -- Vincent Johnson
