BEREA, Ohio — DeShone Kizer has strong-armed his way into a starting job.

The rookie quarterback will start Cleveland's exhibition at Tampa Bay on Saturday, and unless he flops or gets hurt, Kizer will start the Browns' Sept. 10 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Coach Hue Jackson elected to go with Kizer, a second-round pick from Notre Dame, over veterans Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler. Kizer has been the most consistent of the three during training camp and led the Browns to three touchdowns during his two exhibition appearances.
Jackson, who went 1-15 in his first season with Cleveland, said he informed the QBs on Wednesday that Kizer would start this week in what is considered a dress rehearsal for the regular season.

"He has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games," Jackson said. "Development is so important for a young quarterback, this is the next step he needs to take and he deserves this opportunity. We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season."

Unless he stumbles against the Buccaneers, Kizer will be the 27th different quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999 — and fourth Week 1 starter in the past four years.

Showing off a rocket arm and maturity beyond his years, the 21-year-old has shown no signs of being intimidated by the jump to the pros after making 23 starts in two seasons for the Fighting Irish.

Jackson has been taking it slow with Kizer, who began camp at No. 3 on the depth chart, but is now comfortable enough with him to put him in charge of Cleveland's offense.

The Browns intend to run the ball more this season, and an aggressive defense should help take some of the pressure off Kizer.

Jackson could have taken the safe route and gone with Osweiler, who went 8-6 as a starter for Houston last season. But Cleveland's offense has sputtered with Osweiler on the field — zero points in six preseason drives — while Kizer has delivered bigger plays, including two long passes while leading the Browns to a comeback win in his preseason debut against New Orleans.

Kizer has completed 19 of 31 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown in two exhibition games. He's been sacked five times but also showed some elusiveness with eight rushes for 47 yards, including a 1-yard TD.

Osweiler had an obvious edge because of his experience, but his inability to move the ball on Monday against the New York Giants was costly.
Kessler opened camp as the incumbent starter, but despite being in better shape and building arm strength during the offseason, he was unable to hold off a rookie or Osweiler, who didn't seem to have much of a future in Cleveland when he was acquired in a trade.

NOTES: LB Tank Carder (knee) and OL Matt McCants (ankle) were placed on injured reserve after getting hurt in Monday's win. Carder was competing against Joe Schobert to win the starting middle job. He needs surgery to repair a torn ligament. A special teams captain last year, Carder has appeared in 77 games with Cleveland since 2012. ... DB Justin Currie (ankle) was waived with an injury designation.

I think it's a Bold move, but maybe it works out.
Think the Browns have nothing to lose actually and ready or not, he does seem to have the better stats in Pre-Season

Not coincidence the head coach is too.

It's ok, his emotional decisions wont allow him to keep his job for long...

You think Hue Jackson is picking his starting QB based on the color of his skin?

You wouldn't be able to tell by reading this board, but race isn't on most peoples minds all day.

Kizer reminds me of a young Steve McNair. They might as well throw him into the fire, Osweiler's going to be gone next season and Kessler is viewed as a long term backup QB. He realistically gives them the best chance to win if he can make some plays.

Not a given, but possible.

Especially with everything going on right now.

He could be choosing sides.

If players are doing questionable things based on their beliefs, who's to say a coach can't or won't?

You're right about race being on ppls minds these days.
People who have never judged others by color & have never imagined they would pick sides are basically being forced to now because of one side continuously stirring the racial pot.

Short version: Racists are turning people racist

I see this move as a move forward for them. They drafted this guy and want to see what he's got.

He can't be worse than Osweiler and Kessler is nothing special. Let the kid play, learn, and hopefully he is not overwhelmed and flames out...
Don't think they would put him in if they thought mentally he would flame out mentally if he fails.

Plus they are rebuilding and want a high draft pick, playing the rookie should accomplish that.

I see it as a win win for the Browns, get a high draft pick, and let the kid learn and see if they have their next starting QB or not.

Rookie QB as your starter and a bum in Kessler backing him up.

I can see 1-15

Browns pick rookie QB DeShone Kizer to start Saturday, eye trade for Brock Osweiler.

The Cleveland Browns, after naming rookie DeShone Kizer the starting quarterback for their third preseason game, have renewed their attempt to trade veteran Brock Osweiler, a league source tells ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Browns coach Hue Jackson named Kizer the starter for Saturday's preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a statement released Wednesday morning, saying the former Notre Dame signal-caller is "certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season.''
"I think he's gotten better each and every week," Jackson said later Wednesday. "He's showing the characteristics that I look for in a quarterback."
Osweiler, who is due a guaranteed salary of $16 million for 2017, is not expected to play Saturday, Jackson confirmed.
Asked whether he would ask for a trade, Osweiler told ESPN, "That's something I'm going to stay away from."
"I've told you guys all along, I'm always going to just focus on the things that I can control," Osweiler said. "Right now, that's being a great teammate, that's continuing to prepare, be a pro, stay in the playbook and continue to strive to be a better player every day.
"Our general manager and our head coach, they decide who plays and how much they play. As players, all we can do is make the most of the opportunity."
Asked what would have to happen for him to win the job, his response was, "I think that's a great question for our general manager."
When asked about Osweiler's reference to GM Sashi Brown, Jackson said, "It's my decision. I don't know where that came from."
Jackson said he had a "great conversation" with Osweiler on Wednesday morning and that the quarterback "is doing a good job.
"No one has said to Brock, 'Brock you might not play here' or 'you wouldn't be the quarterback here,'" Jackson said. "That's not what was said. Just to be clear about that."
The Browns acquired Osweiler in March as a throw-in on a deal that sent Houston's second round draft pick in 2018 to Cleveland. The Browns listened to trade offers then, but they kept Osweiler after not finding a deal they liked.
Kizer said the opportunity to start Saturday night in Tampa Bay was "awesome."
"Now it's about whatever I can do to go out there and compete and have the success I've had the last couple games," Kizer said.
Osweiler played four series and two quarters in the Browns' first two preseason games. The first-team offense -- with some offensive line backups -- did not score any points in his five possessions. Osweiler completed 12 of 22 passes for 67 yards, 3 yards per attempt.
Kizer, meanwhile, went 19-for-31 for 258 yards with one touchdown and five sacks in two games. The second-round pick from Notre Dame guided nine drives and scored 23 points, all the points coming against backup defenders.
"[Kizer] has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games," Jackson said in a statement released by the team. "Development is so important for a young quarterback; this is the next step he needs to take and he deserves this opportunity.
"We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season."
"As awesome as it is, it just means I have to try to work harder," Kizer said.
Osweiler said he had no regrets about how he approached the Browns position.
"They know the quarterback and the teammate that I am," Osweiler said.
In other moves, the Browns placed linebacker Tank Carder (knee) and offensive lineman Matt McCants (ankle) on injured reserve and waived defensive back Justin Currie (ankle) with an injury designation.
Carder, who was competing for a starting role and had started both preseason games, suffered a torn ACL in the first quarter of Monday's game against the Giants and will need season-ending surgery.
