DETROIT -- New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman left Friday night's game against the Lions on the first drive with a knee injury.
He is questionable to return.

The injury occurred less than two minutes into the game. Edelman was running an in-breaking route, beat linebacker Jarrad Davis and caught the ball at the 29-yard line. Edelman then turned up the field and planted his right foot into the ground at the 17-yard line to avoid safety Tavon Wilson and lunged forward. He immediately reached to the back of his right knee.

After a few minutes being looked at in a makeshift tent, Edelman was taken by cart to the locker room.

Edelman had three catches for 52 yards before the injury. The Patriots used Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola with Edelman out of the game.

ESPN's Mike Reiss contributed to this report.

Already hearing he's out for the season.

Changes a lot for fantasy and for the pats.

Gronk and cooks just became more valuable. Hurts Brady and hurts the pats. He is Brady security blanket and Mr reliable

According to random people on twitter he is possibly dead. I'll wait for pats to give official statement. Could be anything.

Any games he misses will be big. He's Brady's safety net. Also a clutch punt returner.

White, Lewis and Burkhead could see time in the slot if he does miss time. That would create matchup problems for d. Team said they planned on limiting Amendola to keep him fresh for playoffs. That would have to change some. Mitchell is banged up too. Brady and Cooks will need to get comfortable with each other quickly. Who knows if Gronk can stay healthy all season. Multiple surgeries on any part of body is bad enough but on your back?.....brutal.

Did Cooks just move into early second round territory ahead of guys like cooper and baldwin?

Does gronk now belong in round 1?

I love these type of stats. Edelman was on non factor until 2013, so 09 through 12 are meaningless. Futhermore, 09 was Brady's rehab year when he posted medicore stats. Edelmen wasn't there in 2007, but Moss was, the last receiver Brady had similar to Cook.

Edelmen would be a big loss, I love the guy. But I'll take a healthy Gronk over Edelmen and Cooks can be pretty special.

Next man up, teams can and do suffer injuries, and it sucks.

As long as Belichick doesn't get hurt, I'm a happy man.

Exactly. Little guy was the product of the system. Can find guys like that all over.

If there is one team that can absorb the hit and keep on going it's the Pats. They have so much depth it's sick. Hogan, Cooks, Amendola will all see more targets.

Not really sure why he needs to play in preseason. He's 31 with a history of injuries.

It isn't like him and Brady need to develop chemistry at this point.
