Tom Brady denied a claim made last week by Floyd Mayweather Jr. that he and the boxer are “very, very, close friends.”

The New England Patriots quarterback awkwardly addressed Mayweather’s apparently erroneous statement on their purported close friendship during an appearance Monday morning on WEEI radio.

“No, I met him a couple of times,” he said after a long pause, per a WEEI report. “I think he’s a great fighter. That was a great fight the other night.”

Mayweather last week claimed that not only are he and Brady close, the quarterback even sent him a text message ahead of Saturday’s super-fight against MMA superstar Conor McGregor.

“That’s a close friend of mine,” Mayweather told ESPN. “Tom Brady’s a very, very close friend. An unbelievable guy with unbelievable talent.”
“He’s a great guy. Actually, Tom Brady text[ed] me yesterday,” Mayweather said, via Boston.com. “We have a cool friendship. He asked me how everything’s going. And I texted him back, ‘Everything’s cool, you are you doing? How’s the family?’ And he said everything’s going A-okay.”
Brady mentioned Monday he didn’t watch the Mayweather-McGregor bout — he attended Mayweather’s fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2015 — but had a good reason to skip it.

“No, I saw it the next morning,” Brady said. “I had a friends wedding I was at. It was a fun night for me. I had a lot of my friends in town. One of my great friends got married. It was a fun night.”

Brady reportedly “seemed puzzled” over the inquiries about a supposed friendship with Mayweather, who retired a perfect 50-0 after a TKO of McGregor in the 10th round.

“Yeah, I have met him a couple of times,” he said. “Like I said, I think he’s a great fighter,” later adding, “I’m not sure what you’re getting at.”
Mayweather does not have the best of reputations outside the ring, mostly related to a history of domestic violence. It makes sense that Brady, who goes to great lengths to protect his image and brand, would attempt to avoid a close association with the controversial boxer.

Tom may not consider him to be a close friend and he's uncomfortable lying

It may just be semantics or perception
